As a mercenary who cleans up after magic gone wrong, Kate Daniels has seen her share of occupational hazards. Normally, waves of paranormal energy ebb and flow across Atlanta like a tide. But once every seven years, a flare comes, a time when magic runs rampant. Now Kate’s going to have to deal with problems on a much bigger scale: a divine one.
When Kate sets out to retrieve a set of stolen maps for the Pack—Atlanta’s paramilitary clan of shape shifters—she quickly realizes much more is at stake. During a flare, gods and goddesses can manifest and battle for power. The stolen maps are only the opening gambit in an epic tug of war between two gods hoping for rebirth, and if Kate can’t stop the cataclysmic showdown, Atlanta may not survive...
Drafted into working for the Order of Merciful Aid, mercenary Kate Daniels has more paranormal problems than she knows what to do with these days. And in Atlanta, where magic comes and goes like the tide, that’s saying a lot.
But when Kate's werewolf friend Derek is discovered nearly dead, she must confront her greatest challenge yet. As her investigation leads her to the Midnight Games—an invitation only, no holds barred, ultimate preternatural fighting tournament—she and Curran, the Lord of the Beasts, uncover a dark plot that may forever alter the face of Atlanta's shapeshifting community...
Kate Daniels works for the Order of the Knights of Merciful Aid, officially as a liaison with the mercenary guild. Unofficially, she cleans up the paranormal problems no one else wants to handle—especially if they involve Atlanta’s shapeshifting community.
When she’s called in to investigate a fight at the Steel Horse, a bar midway between the territories of the shapeshifters and the necromancers, Kate quickly discovers there’s a new player in town. One who’s been around for thousands of years—and rode to war at the side of Kate’s father.
This foe may be too much even for Kate and Curran, the Lord of the Beasts, to handle. Because this time, Kate will be taking on family...
Kate Daniels may have quit the Order of Knights of Merciful Aid, but she’s still knee-deep in paranormal problems. Or she would be if she could get someone to hire her. Starting her own business has been more challenging than she thought it would be—now that the Order is disparaging her good name. Plus, many potential clients are afraid of getting on the bad side of the Beast Lord, who just happens to be Kate’s mate.
So when Atlanta’s premier Master of the Dead calls to ask for help with a vampire on the loose, Kate leaps at the chance of some paying work. But it turns out that this is not an isolated incident, and Kate needs to get to the bottom of it—fast, or the city and everyone dear to her may pay the ultimate price...
Atlanta is a city plagued by magical problems. Kate Daniels will fight to solve them—no matter the cost...
Mercenary Kate Daniels and her mate, Curran, the Beast Lord, are struggling to solve a heartbreaking crisis. Unable to control their beasts, many of the Pack’s shapeshifting children fail to survive to adulthood. While there is a medicine that can help, the secret to its making is closely guarded by the European packs, and there’s little available in Atlanta.
Kate can’t bear to watch innocents suffer, but the solution she and Curran have found threatens to be even more painful. The European shapeshifters who once outmaneuvered the Beast Lord have asked him to arbitrate a dispute—and they’ll pay him in medicine. With the young people’s survival and the Pack’s future at stake, Kate and Curran know they must accept the offer—but they have little doubt that they’re heading straight into a trap...
As the mate of the Beast Lord, Curran, former mercenary Kate Daniels has more responsibilities than it seems possible to juggle. Not only is she still struggling to keep her investigative business afloat, but she must now deal with the affairs of the Pack, including preparing her people for attack from Roland, a cruel, ancient being with godlike powers.
As Roland’s long shadow looms ever nearer, Kate is called to attend a gathering of leaders from Atlanta’s supernatural factions. When one of the Masters of the Dead is found murdered by a shapeshifter, Kate is given less than twenty-four hours to hunt down the killer. And this time, if she fails, she’ll find herself embroiled in a war that could destroy everything she holds dear...
After breaking from life with the Pack, mercenary Kate Daniels and her mate—former Beast Lord Curran Lennart—are adjusting to a very different pace. While they’re thrilled to escape all the infighting, Kate and Curran know that separating from the Pack completely is a process that will take time.
But when they learn that their friend Eduardo has gone missing, Kate and Curran shift their focus to investigate his disappearance. As they dig further into the merc’s business, they discover that the Mercenary Guild has gone to hell and that Eduardo’s recent assignments are connected in the most sinister way…
An ancient enemy has arisen, and Kate and Curran are the only ones who can stop it—before it takes their city apart piece by piece.
Kate and the former Beast Lord Curran Lennart are finally making their relationship official. But there are some steep obstacles standing in the way of their walk to the altar.
Kate’s father, Roland, has kidnapped the demigod Saiman and is slowly bleeding him dry in a never-ending bid for power. A Witch Oracle has predicted that if Kate marries the man she loves, Atlanta will burn and she will lose him forever. And the only person Kate can ask for help is long dead.
The odds are impossible. The future is grim. But Kate Daniels has never been one to play by the rules...
Kate has come a long way from her origins as a loner taking care of paranormal problems in post-Shift Atlanta. She's made friends and enemies. She's found love and started a family with Curran Lennart, the former Beast Lord. But her magic is too strong for the power players of the world to let her be.
Kate and her father, Roland, currently have an uneasy truce, but when he starts testing her defenses again, she knows that sooner or later a confrontation is inevitable. The Witch Oracle has begun seeing visions of blood, fire, and human bones. And when a mysterious box is delivered to Kate's doorstep, a threat of war from the ancient enemy who nearly destroyed her family, she knows her time is up.

For her child.

Kate and Curran are magnificent together and every carachter is so well written and the world building is amazing.
I have laughed and cried while rooting for Kate, Curran and their found family and I have loved every moment of reading about them.
HEROINE - the star of the show is Kate Daniels, and she is a butt-kicking lead if ever there was. This is not a series that props the female lead at the expense of the other women, either. This is a series that values butt-kicking above all other skills, and the men and women alike are quite capable. Characters without such skills are rarely seen, and usually have at least a boat load of magic instead. While Kate also has magic powers beyond most everyone else, she is not highly skilled at using them. It's her intelligence and skill with a sword that save the day the vast majority of the time. While sometimes the books suffer from a lack of realism in terms of her toughness (I swear, it's like she and every other character can break BOTH legs and just keep soldiering through the pain to finish the fight), they don't simply fall back on her magic to, well, magically save the day every time.
MYSTERY - I would classify the general feel of these books as mysteries, surprisingly, at least for the bulk of the series. Yes, each book builds up to a "big bad" Kate and company must defeat. And as you get closer to the end of the series, there is more emphasis on one ultimate bad guy. But each book begins with some kind of death, and Kate tracking down clues. And she really does track clues - she interviews suspect and witnesses, she brings evidence to a lab for analysis etc etc. I wasn't expecting how much these books, at their core, were really detective novels. So for fans of the fantasy crime genre, these are an excellent choice.
PNR vs UF - it seems like the big distinction between paranormal romance and urban fantasy these days is sex, with PNR being heavy on it. In this regard, the series lands on the UF side. Kate and Curran take several novels to get together, though their tension starts building from the very beginning. Once they are firmly together, there is sex. But a couple of graphic scenes a book, that are easily skipped if that is not your thing. The romance aspect is heavy in the books, growing more essential to the plot as the series goes on. But it works, just like Kate's growing friendships work and are essential to the plot. I don't think the romance would turn off readers except for those who really hate any romance in their books at all.
CHARACTERS - the books have a great, rich collection of other characters. I don't love how the side characters are inconsistent in their importance in each book. One book, she may have her best friend as a sidekick to every adventure; the next book, they may just exchange a few phone calls. But I do love that so many characters are so well-developed. And if you hate books where the author gets you attached to the side characters, only to kill them off like a constant emotional battering ram at the readers - this series won't destroy you. Some characters die. But, for the most part, this is not a series that delights in tearing your heart to pieces.
WORLD-BUILDING - the sub-par world-building is the biggest flaw in the series for me. The novels are set in "post-Shift" Atlanta, meaning some time in the future (within a generation) where magic has arrived, and the world is constantly shifting back and forth between magic and tech. So one minute your car might run on gas, the next minute magic takes over, and you need to spend 15 minutes enchanting your car to run on water. Which I know, because we hear about the cars A LOT. And the phones. And that's mainly it. A couple reference to the roads, to buildings, boat travel etc. But how does government really function? How is money still a viable currency? Who is making toilet paper? It's not that I need those specific questions answered. It's that it just all feels very surface-level description, to aid the plot, but no real effort into really making this world work. There are a couple details that demonstrate the strangeness of this world, we are told them over and over, and that is it. I LOOOOOVE world-building in my SF&F, that just sucks you into this entire new place. That doesn't happen here.
FANTASY - while the book doesn't build its own world as richly as I would like, it does delve deep into mythology and religion for its mysteries and troublemakers. Egyptian, Christian, Greek, you name it. Gods, fables, legends, ancient texts, druids, rabbis. Anything goes. Kate is a font of knowledge, and she is constantly learning more, and taking the reader on for the ride. I enjoyed the draw on history. It's not my personal sweet spot in books, but for those who love it, this will definitely be a treat.
OVERALL - I do recommend the series. It won't go down in my all-time greats, that I read over and over, loving every description of this strange land. But it was definitely an enjoyable read. And a COMPLETE fantasy series, with a legit and satisfying ending for a great, root-able heroine and her cast of friends. Sometimes, that is exactly what you're looking for in a book!
Is it Tom Robbins? No. It's not. I still give these books a 5 star rating. Since finding these authors, and Kate, lol, I have read many different paranormal fantasy books, and these are the best, in my opinion. Most authors of these books tend to put so much graphic sex in them that there is no room for an actual plot, or character building. I think they do it to cover for the fact that they have very little talent. Not so with these books.. and I am certainly not a prude, lol. These books don't need it. They shine as they are, and each book actually is better than the last, and that's hard to do.
I truly applaud this series, and all of these author's books. The was a time when I might have honestly said that the humor and wit in these books, saved my life... I know they made it better.
Illona, you could keep this series going for years and I'll keep buying them.
I recommend it for all urban fantasy fans. There are some steamy scenes, but honestly, they are not a center of the book. The romance between the two main characters is slowly building until the last book and the X-rates scenes are widely spread (less than one per book).
“Ilona Andrews” is the pseudonym for a husband-and-wife writing team. Ilona is a native-born Russian and Gordon is a former communications sergeant in the U.S. Army. Contrary to popular belief, Gordon was never an intelligence officer with a license to kill, and Ilona was never the mysterious Russian spy who seduced him. They met in college, in English Composition 101, where Ilona got a better grade. (Gordon is still sore about that.)
Gordon and Ilona currently reside in Texas with their two children and many dogs and cats.
They have co-authored four NYT and USAT bestselling series, the urban fantasy of Kate Daniels, rustic fantasy of the Edge, paranormal romance of Hidden Legacy, and Innkeeper Chronicles, which they post as a free weekly serial.
