About Amy Collins
Are you looking for advice on how to self-publish? Do you need guidance on how to sell and market your book? Amy Collins is the President of New Shelves Books, one of the largest book sales and marketing content providers in the US. As a former Book Buyer for a chain of bookstores in New York and Sales Director for a large publishing company, she has spent her career working with Barnes & Noble, Target, Costco, Books-A-Million, Wal-Mart, and is a trusted expert, speaker, and recommended sales consultant for some of the largest book and library retailers and wholesalers in the publishing industry. In the last 20 years, Amy and her team have sold over 40 Million books into the bookstore, library, and Chain store market for small and midsized publishers.
When not in the office, her focus is on the working poor and poverty elimination, and she spends a great deal of time personally and professionally working with and training women from disadvantaged backgrounds. A member of the Rochester Women's Giving Circle, she donates not only her time, but a portion of her company's profits to grant based charities that work to alleviate the cycle of poverty.
She is a singer in a Celtic blues band on the weekends and is saving for a new motorcycle (the current one is not fast enough)

Blog postBy Linden Gross on January 21, 2021 Writing is most often a solitary business—but it doesn't have to be. All too often, we writers have to motivate ourselves, isolate ourselves until our pages are done, pat ourselves on the back when things work out and console ourselves when they don’t. But it doesn’t have to be that way, even if you’re not part of a writing team or group. You can work with a writing coach.
People often assume that working with a writing coach implies that you1 week ago Read more -
Blog postPreviously published in October 2017 with BOOKWORKS—this is an updated edition for 2021. The number one way to impress librarians is reviews from established book review sites and periodicals. When we start working with new authors, they are (rightfully) focused on getting Amazon reviews. While that is a necessary and valid endeavor, don’t forget the OTHER kind of reviews necessary for the success of your book.

Blog postBy Marcel Liemant on January 7, 2021
You want readers. And in order to reel them in, first you need to give them the bait to latch onto your hook. But summing up the killer plot, unique world, and complex protagonist in just 150 characters is no mean feat. Luckily, Best Page Forward has you covered.
Crafting the hook that actually garners clicks is about three main components: conflict, stakes, and genre.
Conflict Conflict drives story and it draws a reader in like a b2 weeks ago Read more -

Blog postPosted by New Shelves Books on December 7, 2020
While we used to suggest 30 day pre-order campaigns to New Shelves authors, we no longer suggest a preorder campaign for Amazon, and here's why: It used to be that when you pre-ordered with Amazon, they would count all of your orders as sales on the release day. Your orders stacked up so that on the day it released, they counted all of these orders at once, and you could make bestseller lists. It was awesome! Unfo2 months ago Read more -
Blog postPosted by New Shelves Books on October 22, 2020 POD Math A number of you have asked me about how the math works when you go to IngramSpark for POD.
Here is an example:
A 202 page POD paperback book costs $4.16 to print.
The book is priced retail at 16.99
Ingram will purchase the book from Ingram Spark at 55% discount off of the retail price. That will leave you $7.65

Blog postYou may or may not be aware of the brand usage rules at Amazon. The marketplace is starting to crack down on this.
An author we know went online a week or two ago, and she was flabbergasted because Amazon had closed her access to their affiliate program. She then received an email explaining why.
It all stemmed from a picture on her Instagram feed showing that her book had achieved the #1 post on Amazon.com in her genre. She had earned the Amazon #1 badge rightfully from12 months ago Read more -
Blog postDonating books to libraries is a great idea, but you want to do it wisely. Dropping off a copy of your book at your local library will quite often just mean that your local library now has ANOTHER book to take to the local paper shredder or sell for 50 cents at their year end sale. Don’t let your book end up like that… Don’t just leave it at the front counter. Imagine a librarian coming in and seeing your book on their desk, and they are like, “What the heck is this?”

Blog postIn this article, we are focusing on how consumer book sales can tell us what readers want. A lot of the choices we publishers make are based on what we want or what we think we SHOULD do. Here are a few recent examples of insight gained by authors for us all to learn from.
Zach Obront from Book In a Box recently analyzed the 272 books that have sat at #1 on the NYT Nonfiction Bestseller List over the past 7 years. His primary goal was to understand the ideal range for length3 years ago Read more -
Blog post1. If I publish in two or more different file formats (e.g. epub, PDF) should I assign separate ISBNs?
Yes. Each different format of an electronic publication that is published and made separately available should be given a separate ISBN.
2. Should different versions of the e-book that use the same file format (e.g. epub) have different ISBNs?
If the different versions use the same DRM software (e.g. Adobe ACS4) with substantially the same settings and are inter3 years ago Read more -
