Blog postMy last blog post was in October. As with most of us, 2020 got in the way of my productivity. The pandemic, politics, riots, wildfires . . . each day, it seemed, there was something new to think about. Add to that a steady stream of freelance writing assignments, and blogging slipped to the bottom of my to-do list—
Did you know there’s a web site that features nothing but lists? Listverse will keep you occupied for hours. And check out Paula Rizzo’s book, Listful Living: A List-Maki3 weeks ago Read more -
Blog postIn my last post, Writing After Age 50–It’s Never Too Late, I shared the advantages of being an older writer. Today, I want to add several quotes from the late author, Ursula K. Le Guin. (You might remember being a child and reading her wonderful “Catwings” book series. Ms. Le Guin is also well-known for her speculative fiction, 21 novels, 11 volumes of short stories, essays, and poetry.) She said:

Blog postIt wasn’t until I took a children’s literature course in college that I discovered the “Little House” books written by Laura Ingalls Wilder. The series was published decades earlier between 1932 and 1943. I was a late bloomer joining the Little House Fan Club. Laura was a late bloomer herself. She published the first book, Little House in the Big Woods, when she was 64.
Maybe, like Laura, you are older than 50 and thinking about writing a book. It could be you don’t know where to begi4 months ago Read more -
Blog post“’I wish it need not have happened in my time,’ said Frodo. ‘So do I,’ said Gandalf, ‘and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.’”

I haven’t posted here since June. Truthfully, I haven’t felt motivated to write, and I’m not alone. I’ve heard from many writer friends that they just don’t feel like writing or doing much else. The Coronavirus, politics, civil unres5 months ago Read more -
Blog postThe Bible says God gives us specific talents. Do you remember being a kid and discovering something you were really good at? God planted that seed in you and it started to grow. As you grew you learned to make what you’re good at work for you.
I’m good at making rhymes. When I was little, I drove people crazy singing silly made-up songs. My mother enjoyed reminding me of my first rhyme, made up at age three, Pepsi cola hits the pot . . . but, I digress. As a freelance writer, I’ve writ7 months ago Read more -
Blog postA friend told me, “I want to listen to the news and know what’s going on in the world, but it’s really hard listening when the news is all bad.” She’s not alone. But, what if there were a word game to play, something fun to do while listening to all that bad news? Fun and bad news. Total opposites! Somewhat similar to an oxymoron—a figure of speech, usually one or two words, in which seemingly contradictory terms appear side by side. (organized mess, controlled chaos).

Blog postHow do you view the world right now? For some, the world seems smaller as we weather this pandemic together. Others feel overwhelmed by a world filled with pain, suffering and conflicting information. Maybe everything that’s going on in the world right now is affecting your ability to write. If so, you are not alone.
When you quarantined at home, you celebrated having plenty of time to write. You set goals: I’m going to start writing my novel. I’m finally going to finish my novel. I’l8 months ago Read more -
Blog postThe Coronavirus has taken possession of the media causing writers all over the world to say they can’t settle their thoughts enough to write. Maybe you can relate. You sit down to write a piece of fiction, but the words won’t come. That’s okay! There’s something you can do right now to improve your fiction writing in the future:
Start a Coronavirus journal.
In fiction writing, thoughts lead characters to act. Your thoughts right now are likely all over the place! But if you ca9 months ago Read more -
Blog postHello friends!
So, here we are in the middle of a worldwide pandemic.
What effect will it have on writers?
If, like me, you are self-employed and working from home, it’s business as usual. Our clients who work in publishing are scrambling to transition from working in the office to working at home. That might slow communication a bit, but, for the most part, not much has changed.
For other writers, most are self-isolating at varying degrees.

Blog postA friend said to me recently, “I wanted to be a writer when I was young. I even studied journalism, but then life got in the way. Now, I’m too old to write.”
This woman is, let’s just say, older. We’re about the same age.
“You’re not too old to write!” I said. “I’m older—and I write.”
“But you’ve worked in publishing your whole adult life. It’s your career.”
Age should never deter a person from pursuing a dream. Whether it’s writing or anything else. But age m11 months ago Read more
