Blog postSo I’m in Minnesota. Staying in a suburb of Minneapolis called Eagan. Across the river on the south side. Yuppie suburb kind of place. Had lunch in Minneapolis Monday. Dinner and lunch Tuesday out here.
Last night, we got a little weird.
The Pizzafarmer lives in Minnesota. He was the inspiration for the Wilson Jaxx character in the original Nuns With Guns anthology. I have since written several more episodes, which will get published in the winter, as part of Boundary Shock Qu22 hours ago Read more -
Blog postI’m in Minnesota, counting down to CONvergence, which promises to be an utterly charming and awesome event. And I will not open myself up to so much work next year, assuming that they invite me back. (Seventeen things over four days, when I had honestly been expecting 6. That’s normal for a con, at least for me historically.)
I am an introvert. (Big surprise there, for anyone who knows me.)
At the same time, I am a player on a stage, and I have a lot of experience with that soYesterday Read more -
Blog postWow. I’m in a Humblebundle with Brandon Sanderson, Frank Herbert(!), Alan Dean Foster, and Kevin J. Anderson. (And WAY more…)
Seriously.
It’s called the Stars of SciFi and it was put on by Draft2Digital to mark their new efforts in moving more directly into publishing, having largely been more of a middleman up until now. (They’re the folks that get my books into libraries. Have you checked out any of my stuff from your local library yet? You should.)

Blog postA lot of folks seem to believe that you must either write short fiction, or novels in order to be successful.
The short game gets you into magazines and such, where you build up your name and polish your writing craft. I even know a few folks that do make a steady living on short stuff, mostly by turning around and selling all that short fiction as ebooks afterwards. (Lot of effort, but if it works, go for it.)

Blog postThe power of breaking streaks has been on my mind. I quit the day job to become a full-time writer at the end of February, 2018 (No Pants Day, as we celebrate it around here). I had previously been tracking my writing as an annual thing, but in March and April I realized that I had greatly increased my writing speed and output, so I created a new spreadsheet to track. Ended up with just over 75k words for the month.

Blog postSo I am going to Minneapolis in August for the CONvergence convention. Hopefully, I’ll see folks there, but I just found out my schedule, and things are going to be a bit hectic. Fortunately, I’m also going to be in town for a few days ahead of time, so if you want to get together for a meal or coffee, let me know now so I can arrange things. (Move quickly, ya hear?)

Blog postI had a Coke yesterday. Maybe not exotic to some of you, but I made a conscious decision in July of 2013 to stop drinking soda pop. Too much corn syrup in my life. Too many chemicals. Not healthy.
Summer 2013 was kinda one of those big ones. At least for me. Major emotional breakdown. In a good way, because I realized that I wasn’t happy. Hadn’t been happy in a while. Needed to make changes. Drastic ones.
Had been single for a while at that point. Wheels spinning in place. Gea2 months ago Read more -
Blog postI lost a good friend yesterday.
Back in 2018 (I think), Fabulous Publisher Babe and I took the Coast Starlight (Amtrak) to Los Angeles from Seattle. Overnight, so we got a cabin and hung out there, plugged in and writing while enjoying the scenery and talking publishing. (Duh)
Outside of Oakland, we hopped off, because the main train continues down the coast and stops at every little town. We took an inland spur that only stopped a few times, and got us to Bakersfield, where e2 months ago Read more -
Blog postFellow told me that the other day. Part of a discussion on the interwebs about the different lifestyles that come with Indie Publishing.
First off, if anyone tells you that “you MUST” do X, feel free to ignore them. I’ll offer suggestions and hints, but I haven’t found the secret handshake that made me wealthy beyond all dreams of avarice.
Not that I would mind.
I can tell you what works for me. I can look at what worked for other folks.

Blog postI bought property at the end of a cul-de-sac. In a quiet corner of rural King County (Seattle), with only two access points (NW and SW) for an area roughly 100 square miles. (The county bought the land around Rattlesnake Canyon and closed it off years ago, so you can’t get through that way anymore. EVER.)
To get to my house, you drive down the road, turn a curve, go to the end, and you’re facing my gravel driveway. Then you wind up and around 150 meters to a plateau midway up the hill3 months ago Read more
