How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

5.0 out of 5 stars“I must outwit my impersonator before she outwits me.”
Reviewed in the United States on February 17, 2020
(My review applies to the 1961 revised edition.)

Nancy and her friend Helen are invited to bridesmaids at the wedding of their friend Emily Willoughby. They travel to Lilac Inn, a colonial inn owned by Emily and her fiance. But when they arrive, they find that the inn is besieged with odd and suspicious happenings. Later Emily's valuable diamonds are stolen, and a Nancy Drew impostor is running loose. Now Nancy will have to unearth the diamonds, expose the inn's saboteurs, and outwit her double!

I absolutely loved this volume. The story is very engaging, and the plot is complex. Suspense is high, and there is lots of action and twists. It’s very hard to put the book down!

Nancy's chemistry with Helen is very enjoyable. The writing is marvelous, and the illustrations are very nice.

Overall, this is an excellent Nancy Drew mystery. Highly recommended.

1.0 out of 5 starsNancy Drew modernized- Wrong publication date
Reviewed in the United States on September 13, 2019
Description states it was published in 1930, the publication date was 1989, thus the setting, language, descriptions, etc. we’re all radically modernized. Not as advertised.

4.0 out of 5 stars The intro by original author of series worth the price!

I love the original versions of the books in this series that Applewood Publishing has been printing. If you are a Mother who read the series, these make excellent books for your daughters who love to read and like a good mystery! The illustrations are great. The dialogue is dated, but only leads to the charm of these books. The true author's name was Mildred Wirt Benson, a ghost writer from the MidWest. She was the first graduate of journalism from the University of Iowa. She writes an introduction to this book that is worth the price of the book alone! Not my favorite in the series, but it still evokes the spirit of the 30's and the fun I had curling up and devouring these books on a rainy weekend afternoon.

Love Nancy Drew and The Mystery at Lilac Inn is my favorite. Be aware that this is an older version and wording used may be offensive to some people (i.e. racial term used that I prefer not to read). Other than that, it is a great story that serves as mental comfort food.

4.0 out of 5 stars Both Editions Are Great
Reviewed in the United States on April 12, 2003
This review concerns both the original 1930 edition and the revised 1961 edition, which is the one commonly found in new book stores. Both editions involve the theft of valuable jewels which belong to Nancy's friend Emily from a place called Lilac Inn; however, that is pretty much where similarity between the two books ends. In the original edition, Lilac Inn is a restaurant where Emily's guardian, Mrs. Willoughby, goes to have lunch while in possession of Emily's jewels. After the jewels are stolen from Mrs. Willoughby, the police begin to suspect that she was involved in the theft. Nancy and Emily believe in Mrs. Willoughby's innocence and Nancy sets out to find the real thief. With the revised edition, Lilac Inn is an inn owned by Emily and her fiance. The jewels are stolen during a dinner party where Mrs. Willoughby (who is Emily's aunt in this edition) was going to present Emily with the jewels. Also Nancy has a look-a-like who is going around town causing all sorts of trouble. Both editions are excellent books and because they are both distinct stories, you could read them both and not feel like you know exactly how the second one will turn out. Both books had plenty of action and had good endings. Personally, I prefered the original, but they are both interesting books. Read them both if you can, you won't be disappointed with either one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Thanks for the memories!
Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2014
I had read this book back in the 1960's and didn't remember the plot. I was surprised at how complicated the story became. Carson Drew certainly is not a normal father figure. I can't imagine my dear husband telling our daughters that they could risk their lives solving mysteries. The culprits explaining everything to Nancy at the end of the book was not wise, but I expect these criminals were planning her demise. Reading this book was enjoyable and brought back memories of reading one Nancy Drew mystery after another as fast as my mother could get them for me. Read them again and enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars An intriguing plot!
Reviewed in the United States on October 6, 2014
I do believe this is one of my more favorite Nancy Drew mysteries. The story truly had me baffled until the final strings were pulled. After Nancy's friend, Emily Willoughby, has revealed that odd events have been taking place around the inn, Nancy Drew is on the job. But that is not her only problem, because someone in River Heights is actually impersonating Nancy... and getting away with it! How will Nancy cope with all the mysterious occurrences? Better yet, how can she capture her own double?

4.0 out of 5 stars Like Some in the Series Better
Reviewed in the United States on November 24, 2015
Liked others in the series better such as The Hidden Staircase, Secret of the Old Clock, but if you want to read all of the Nancy Drew mysteries, you probably don't want to miss this one. The writing style in the books are similar, even if written by different authors. It's primarily the plots which set the books apart. Good but not great for Nancy Drew.

4.0 out of 5 stars A book full of mystery
Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2010
Nancy Drew and the lilac inn is a book full of mystery.

From reading the frist 3 chapters the book begins to get puzzling and confussing to the
mind.
The strange avents that follow one after the other make it longer to finish. This book dose not contain the best or average wonder and thrill as the other Nancy Drew books.

You will only very very enjoy this book if you are...
* a person who can really really be paitent and can wait a long time without getting bored
* a person who likes taking risks and likes books with risk takers in them
*a person who likes danger

If you are not a person with all theese guiltys then you will noy strongly like this book.
I recomend that you read Nancy Drew and the Secret of the old attic

4.0 out of 5 stars My personal Opinion
Reviewed in the United States on April 1, 2002
I love this book. I have read in before and I have rated it a 4-star book. Only one star away from the tops. The only reason I didn't make this a 5 star is the criminal, whom I won't say, you don't know him/her untill the very end. And I like to figure out the mystery as I read the books which I couldn't do here, but the events that happen in here and the way the story line just clicks, makes up for that! From canoe crashes to stolen diamonds, this book has it all!
