This was 1 of 4 roof texts I ordered through Amazon to prime my brain for installing shingles to my garage roof. Of the 4 texts, this was the least helpful. It covers a lot of things but nothing in great detail and it seems to be really out-of-date.
I've always found that multiple texts are required to perform any task that is new to me. I've repaired televisions, rebuilt automobiles, performed carpentry ... and now roofing ... by immersing myself in multiple texts.
Of the 4 texts I got to prep for my roofing project, this "Complete Roofing Handbook" is one that I wish I hadn't bought. I wish I had chosen something else. It just didn't help me much with shingle application to my hip-style roof.

I purchased this book back in March 19, 1996 at one of our local book store. The picture cover advertised for this book and also the 1986 edition is exactly the same as the one I own ISBN 0-02-527850-4, its also hard cover. I've learned so much from this book about all different type of roofs. Although I've built so many different type of roofs over the years this book has opened my understanding to a whole new level and I did apply many of the technical principles from this book to my own work. One thing I can say to any hands me down tradesman like myself in the building industry, owning or borrowing these type of books does help you a lot and I'd highly recommend if you have the extra money its one of the best investments to add to your personal library. If you have any children be it boy or girl when they are growing up and start showing some sort of interest in the building industry you can give it to them to help them from an early age. It will be a great asset to them too.
That said I'll now go to some details of the book: ♠ Chapter 1-Types of Roofs; ♠ Chapter 2-Roofing and Reroofing; ♠ Chapter 3-Roof Deck Preparation; ♠ Chapter 4-Roof and Attic Insulation; ♠ Chapter 5-Roof and Attic Ventilation; ♠ Chapter 6-Skylights and Roof Openings; ♠ Chapter 7-Dormer Construction; ♠ Chapter 8-Roof Flashing Details; ♠ Chapter 9-Applying Strip Shingles; ♠ Chapter 10-Applying Specialty Shingles; ♠ Chapter 11-Roll Roofing; ♠ Chapter 12-Built-Up Roof; ♠ Chapter 13-Roofing with Wood Shingles and Shakes; ♠ Chapter 14-Slate Roofing; ♠ Chapter 15-Tile Roofing; ♠ Chapter 16-Installing Gutters and Downspouts; ♥ Appendix A-Professional and Trade Associations; ♥ Appendix B-Roofing Manufacturers; and ♥ Appendix. The book have well over 522 pages with detailed information and lots of illustrations and genuine black and white photos to go with it to make it very easy to understand.
I'd recommend this book to any novice or even the advanced builder who has a real love for Roof building and mostly for the hands me down tradesman, it will prove to be an invaluable help.
