A modern language wizard fails to cast his spell
Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2018
This book is useful as an introduction to linguistics. The authors clearly has absorbed the literature on the subject. My main beef is his effort to understand language from a universal perspective while rejecting both a biological-determinism explanation and a relativistic (in this case-mystical) explanation. But, in his rejections, I have learned something about the field, and authors whom I might be interested in studying in the future. His work has little lasting value beyond that.
