5.0 out of 5 starsDon't think this is just another shoot-em up cowboys military story

I don't normally write a lot of product reviews , however after finishing this extraordinary book I really don't have a choice. First off, I've read numerous real life accounts of men's time in the military. I have come to expect these stories to be different versions of the same story with perhaps a few personal wrinkles added in. What sets this book apart is the authors courage to let us inside his psyche as he bears his vulnerability, strained allegiences, and own moral character as he leads these men into battle. The units dynamics as laid out in clear, concise, stages for all to see. The author does a truly professional job of letting know how irratating many of the platoons internal and external challenges were without ever losing site of his overall responsibility to lead his men professionally. I was amazed by his ability to not give in to more immediate primal instinct for revenge in lieu of the long term physcological scars his men would had to have endured. Not simply a recounting of military skirmishes but a commentary on who we are .

2.0 out of 5 starsA good story smothered by ego
Reviewed in the United States on June 22, 2019
The author has a good story to tell but he just about ruins it with a writing style that screams "Hey, look at how cool I am." This is so blatant and distracting it severely interferes with the storyline. At the conclusion of one battle the author's combat acumen and bravery was so evident that a green beret Lieutenant Colonel approached him and ask if he'd ever thought about joining the Special Forces. The author had not considered it but, being the cool dude that he is and not wanting to hurt the green beret's feelings said that he had. The LTC then offered to help him out if he decides to apply. Give me a break.

Mr. Parnell appears to make some attempt to spread the praise and complements around to some other members of the platoon but these are just glancing blows and function only to enhance the author's own status. Any time an Army officer tells me how respected and admired he was by the enlisted men under him, my BS meter does a hard slam to the right.

As stated earlier, Mr. Parnell does have a good story to tell. Have a shovel in hand and you too can enjoy it. The book is not all bad. First off the author is unusually perceptive for a military man. He recognizes the futility of the war and just how worthless our supposed allies are. Mr. Parnell also gives several examples of how our political leaders have no concept of what it takes to win a war. The same political strategies that doomed our efforts in Vietnam are dooming us in the Middle East.

I also enjoyed the way the author laid out the action/battle scenes with one proviso. I understand that most accounts of combat benefit from a dose of literary license, and this does not offend me but I do expect it to be confined to the realm of possibilities. Mr. Parnell has one battle that seems to go on forever. It is one of the most horrendous and violent confrontations one can imagine and you'll start to wonder how anyone in the allied force could survive a fight like this. As it turns out it was quite survivable. Only one man was killed.

I wanted to give this book a 3 star rating but after sitting down and recalling all the bluster and BS within, it was a real struggle to give it a 2.

I was an infantry medic in Vietnam where I lost my right leg. The courage and fortitude of these men totally amazed me. The book gives me a window into the world of our modern military. I can see many changes and a multitude of differences, but it is all same same. We fight, give our all. Those of us who survive come home continue to fight and spend the rest of our lives surviving.
We had a small black mutt, Sam, who walked point with our company. He found many caches of weapons and supplies. He also once triggered an ambush early saving many lives. He was one of two casualties. The other was a platoon leader with a wound to the shoulder. Sent them both back on a medical chopper. Sam was later poisoned.
PS hope someone shot mail bitch.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vividly told, it will grab your heart and not let go.

Outlaw Platoon is one of the most outstanding books I have read. It combines the grit and detail of  The Outpost: An Untold Story of American Valor , with the take-you-there and grab your heart memoir style of Angela's Ashes. Sean Pernell tells his story without sparing himself from the difficulty of remembering the hardships, the losses, and the shining moments that can never come again.
This is more than a story of physical courage. It is a story of the kind of spiritual courage it takes for men to love one another without stinting, to give everything they have for one another and then dig down and find some more to give. The courage it takes to allow yourself to get close to people you might lose at any moment. No experience except perhaps parenthood can even compare to the risks to the heart that these men faced, the wrenching losses the experienced and the courage it took not to face the next battle, but to know that people who mattered so much to you were facing it too.
This story of a grueling deployment in the under-supplied, under-manned and unforgiving Afghanistan theater is told with amazing compassion and vivid language that is powerful without ever becoming overblown.
For every American who did NOT serve, I think we almost owe it to those who did to read this story and appreciate what true valor looks like. The men of Outlaw Platoon meet the most exacting definition of "heroes."
Thank you, Captain Parnell, for sharing this very personal journey with us.

This book is not a book that let's you read about what war is like, this is a book that puts you in the middle of every battle with the bullets flying past you and the explosions rocking the world around you. You are there with the guys that experienced it all. You get to experience the real meaning of courage, the meaning of being your brother`s keeper, the meaning of giving your all and until you have nothing left, then giving even more. Anyone that wants to understand what being part of something greater than yourself needs to read this book. Anyone that wants to know the true meaning of courage needs to read this book. The men of this book are truly the best of the best. They deserve to be honored. Not only for their service, but more importanrly, for showing what it means to be men courage and honor.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gripping, heroic story
Reviewed in the United States on October 8, 2018

The terrorists wanted to drive the Americans from Afghanistan, just like their forebears did to the British and the Soviets. They wanted to force the Americans to retreat soon, and in disgrace, after a terrible death toll. They wanted an American Dien Bien Phu, the overrunning and total annihilation of an American unit, capped by the on-camera beheading of all captured US soldiers. This was the reality faced daily by US units like the “outlaw platoon,” men of the famed US 10th Mountain Division at the point of the spear in Afghanistan. “Outlaw Platoon” is the well-written, heroic story of one such unit. The enemy were some of the world's best light infantry, with plenty of modern arms, plenty of fanatical recruits from across the globe, well led, and having a base secure from attack in nearby Pakistan where they could train and prepare to attack the Americans. To survive, the Americans had to be better- an order of magnitude better- soldiers than their enemies. If you like this genre, you won't want to stop reading this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars An exciting and authentic moment by moment recounting of multiple combat encounters by a great author and officer.

Book is the best minute by minute accounts of firefights ever written. It is heart rendering, suspense filled, adrenalin pumping and tension filled recounting of firefights and bravery. A book that I could not put down because it is so exciting to read.

It also recounts the type of experiences that I also had with the frustrating idiocy, and stupidity of the US ARMY command structure.
I am retired Army Medical Corps and deeply frustrated that despite multiple requests I was never allowed to be deployed. In my experience, if there is an intelligent thought running around anywhere the Army then the command would stomp on it like a cockroach.

I was fortunate enough to serve under a General who recounted his experience in the Army. He stated that when you start out that you are at the back of the bus and you assume that someone is driving the bus. Finally, when you get close enough to the front of the bus, you look at the front of the bus and realize that there is no one driving the bus.

There are several instances in this book where the moral of the Outlaws was destroyed because of these idiot decisions. One of the worst was the execution of the dogs that were such a comfort to the troops when they returned to base between combat missions. This was done because of false accusations by the female "postal bitch" that she had been bitten by one of the dogs.

Sean Parnell is a brilliant combat leader and one of the bravest, wise and caring combat commanding officers that has ever existed. I thank him for his service and for giving us this fantastic book. I will know that I will read it several times.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just what these men had to endure in this politically correct war

This was a page turner for me. I have never been in the military. Have two sons that were. Lost a lot of sleep over their safety.
Vietnam was boiling when I mess when I was draft age. My number never came up thank the lord. I heard stories from returning friends that convinced me that the politicians had no intention of winning that war. Letting the enemy use bordering countries provide safe harbors for Vietcong.
In the Afghan war pakastan served the same function.
The outlaw platoon was an incredible group of exceptionally brave, tough fighters. But the politicians allowed the enemy to mass on the border and launch attacks on the soldiers and the “rules of engagement” prevented the US troops from engaging them for fear of hitting a pakanie who was assisting them.
In spite of the anchor attached to this platoon, they were able to inflict major damage to the bad guys
This is a story of young men growing into leaders and fighters that was probably duplicated all over Afghanistan.
Great read and very inspiring. You should read this book

1.0 out of 5 stars Meh. Biased. Poor prose.

Somewhat interesting approach in describing what was in his head, but author conveyed blatant bias and favoritism towards his soldiers. He also consistently denigrated other units (2nd platoon) and job functions (POGs), essential though they are to keeping the enemy facing units functional. Also, prose was fairly high schoolish. Not worth my money.

If you've served in combat, I'll warn you; READING THIS CAN BE traumatic. Not kidding.
As a former medic, I wondered how I'd treat the horrific injuries described. And I was especially impressed by the author's description of a Physicians Assistant in the "rear with the beer" non-challant and unprofessional attitude toward injured soldiers. Saw that too many times myself. Glad to hear she got yanked. Lt Sean Parnell also descbribes what are derogatorily known in the military as "lifers";
Lazy, Ignorant, Forever Expecting Retirement" types. He didn't name names, but I'll bet those he mentioned with pseudo-names have their ears burning....
The author's running for Congress, by the way. IMHO, we need more combat vets writing these kinds of raw, descriptive books and serving the country in Congress, for as General Douglas MacArthur once said:
"The soldier above all others prays for peace..." Perhaps with veterans like Parnell in Congress, we'll stay out of war.
