5.0 out of 5 starsBUY. THIS. BOOK. Do your family a favor.

PLEASE BUY THIS BOOK!!!!!! The imagery is vivid, the details deliciously fanciful, the characters well developed and soulful. The themes are delightfully reminiscent of many fun fantasy/sci fi franchises such as Men in Black, The Hunger Games, & Harry Potter, with a dash of Disney-like magic. The story is universal and tremendously entertaining for all ages. It is thought provoking, clever, and humorous. It's also a non-threatening yet descriptive and informative way to start a discussion on the evils of systemic racism and inherent prejudices. I WISH something like this had been available to me as a little black girl seeking excellence and self esteem in a white-male dominated world. My husband, sons and I will treasure this story forever!!!!!! As a mother, psychiatrist, and avid reader, I highly recommend this book.

1.0 out of 5 starsHarry Potter wanna be
Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2021
This story line is a Harry Potter gone bad. Nothing original in this book. Magic and sorcery but not very well written. The first few chapters seem interesting but then it mirrors J K Rowling's books though without the flair. I would not recommend.

Yooo! Listen this was another one of my anticipated reads. I saw the gorgeous cover and needed to know everything about it! Once it was released I got my hands on it ASAP. ⠀
⠀
I read this whole book in 24 hours. I tried slow down but I couldn't get out my mind "so whats gonna happen next." Here is my review⠀
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⠀
Yea its 5 out of 5 stars for me!⠀
I loved this book so much its definitely in my top 5 favorite books of all time. This was the book I needed in Middle School. I actually have childhood flashbacks when reading this. The magic was so interesting. The storyline and plot was seriously relatable and well written. The characters are well developed and memorable. The mystery in the book was gripping I didn't know what to believe 😳. ⠀
⠀
If I had to give it a critique I would say... if you ever dealt with bullying I can say this book triggered the crap out of me but still empowered me at the sametime.⠀
⠀
Also I thought the villian made some questionable decisions but being I couldn't guess the villian to begin with they already had one up on me anyway lmao.⠀
⠀
This book could be describe as the gender bender melenated Percy Jackson. ⠀
⠀
This is a new CLASSIC. Get it for your kids or get it for yourself.... eitherway JUST GET IT.

OMG! I hope this becomes a long series!

Amari is amazing. After the mysterious disappearance of her brother, Amari receives an invitation to a secret supernatural bureau. Very quickly her world gets turned upside down. She goes from another girl on the block to a world full of dragons, talking elevators, and supernatural beasts. She also finds that every part of who she is, is considered illegal in this new world.

Excellent read!

5.0 out of 5 stars elements of lots of things but Amari's story is all her own.

Combines elements of Maya and the Rising Dark (the protagonist), a little Percy Jackson (Amari's mother and Percy's would get along - and, of course, the training at summer camp), a flavor of Men in Black, and a whole lot of Harry Potter (JKR may be out of favor now and for good reason but that doesn't invalidate Harry Potter and what it meant to a lot of us). I wouldn't say it reminds me of Tristan Strong - you can have fantasy books centered on Black kids and not have them be alike! - but fans of the one will probably like the other. And it combines all of these elements into something whole and strong, fun and well-written ... and probably important to the next batch of fantasy fans growing up. ANd enjoyable for the rest of us too. I have already pre-ordered the sequel.

This book is awesome. My 12-year-old daughter likes reading well enough, but this book grabbed her and she devoured it. She appreciates that you get plunged into the exciting and interesting parts right off the bat instead of having a lot of exposition first. Amari is a great character and the world is interesting - and we've only scratched the surface. I think this book is appropriate for almost all ages, and my 7 year old son has asked to have it as the next read aloud.

My daughter was so into it that I stole it and read it this morning (because I love myself some good YA fiction), and it truly is a page turner. Now the hard part is waiting for the sequel!! We found it through the Twitter recommendation of the author of the Nevermoor series, and if they liked that, they will like this. If they like this, go buy the Trials of Morrigan Crow next!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Well Done

While I'm not the biggest fan of fantasy that features limited magic systems (AKA broken magic systems) where the magic can basically do anything and the rules are of said magic are flimsy at best, I can say, when it comes to Middle-Grade fiction, I don't mind it.

The wacky magic in this book gives it its overall charm and I feel in this instance if the magic was given set rules and limitations then the story itself wouldn't have been as enjoyable.

'Amari and the Night Brothers' follows down a familiar Middle-Grade thread of magic schools and secret supernatural societies. However, the way Alston weaves the story is what counts in the end. At the heart of the story is a driving mystery that grows ever so enticing and complicatedly intricate the further along the story unfolds. This is one book I genuinely had a hard time putting down.

The story went in unpredictable directions that didn't feel forced or the characters had sudden epiphanies that spurred them into existence. Everything unfolds in an organic way and I appreciate that. The read itself is easy and while some may find the pacing fast, I felt it was well balanced with getting to the point without getting bogged down in over explanations or exposition that did not serve the plot. I will admit that there is one chapter in this book that serves as heavy-handed foreshadowing and doesn't necessarily move the plot forward or do much of anything really, and that's when Amari meets the Director of Good Fortunes and Bad Luck. It's a kids' book so I'll give it some slack in that regard.

Overall it's a great read all around and I'd recommend it for kids ages 8 on up!

This book sucked me in from the beginning. Amari is searching for and determined to find her brother Quinton who has been missing. She ends up at a supernatural summer camp where nothing is as of seems. Uncomfortable in her own skin, she has to learn to trust herself and her instincts to hopefully find her brother.

I have had Amari and the Night Brothers on my shelf for a while and I don’t know what took me so long to read it. Maybe because it was a large hardcover book and I fell asleep once and bonked my face with a hardcover book once, so I didn’t want to take the chance again! This is listed as an MG book, but readers of all ages will love the imaginative fantasy world, magic and characters. Amari is a wonderful character, one that girls and boys will admire for her smarts and her loyalty. She is determined to find her brother and won’t let anything stop her. A bullying aspect is woven into the story in a way that many kids will be able to relate to, but be aware that it happens. The writing is crisp and clever. I bought this book so I could read it before giving it to my nephews and I know they will enjoy it too.

My 7 year old son is an avid reader. He's been reading independently since age 4 and LOVES to read. He's read the Harry Potter series, got to book 4 and his interest stalled. I saw a review of Amari that said it had all that Harry Potter was missing. Well....that must be true because my son finished this book in less than a week, he kept sneaking at bedtime to read more after lights out and he says he's reading it again. Can't wait for the 2nd book, I've already pre ordered it!!

5.0 out of 5 stars AMAZING! BETTER BE A SERIES!!!

I loved this book. Granted, I was a little put off by the present-tense in the writing which made it more difficult for me to get into it, and I saw the twist at the very beginning (though I expected another twist with a specific character which didn't happen... least, not "yet"?), this was a wonderful read.

For me, 4.8. But as an educator, who works with 4th graders; this is a hard 5 out of 5 due to the ease of writing for children still new to Middle Grade. If you have children who are starting to read Middle Grade, Amari is a much easier read than certain other extremely popular MG books, but with the same wonder and excitement which can be enjoyed by all!
