How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we donโ€™t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

3.0 out of 5 starsA decent story
Reviewed in the United States ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ on January 26, 2022
Enjoyed the story. The books were far better the DVD. I don't know if there was more than one DVD, but was so disappointed in the DVD other than the special effects, I never considered searching for a second. Read the books.

In reading the books, it soon became obvious that some chapters were written by one author and other chapters were written by the other author.

Sometimes measurements are given in English units and other times they are given in Metric units. I can deal with either system, but it would have been nicer if the book stuck to one measurement system.

The editing and layout of the text I would consider only fair. This sadly distracts from what I would consider a good story.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent complement to the SyFy/Amazon series

I haven't read a book in many decades but once seeing The Expanse on Amazon Prime, I was hooked. I intently watched all six seasons and while I like the season 6 conclusion, I genuinely hope the remaining books get the TV series of movie treatment.

Each book provides so much more details than what the episodes share. You get a much deeper understanding of each character as there is more back story for all. Generally speaking the episodes follow the book but there are distinct differences. One the main story line changes occurs with Alex in season 5. Therefore, books 5 & 6 differ from TV season 5 & 6. It's not that the story line changes so much but rather the characters. As I am now reading book 7, I believe they would have to continue with more character changes. This is also true for the Drummer character. For anyone who has read the books, Pa form the book is portrayed as Drummer in the TV series. Beyond book 6 / season 6, these characters would also need to go through some serious adaptation should there be season 7 and beyond.

In any case, I've watched each episode at least twice and have now read the books. It's time to go back and watch them yet again to see what other differences or nuances I can pick up.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tough reading at times

When the TV show ended prematurely, as most scifi shows seem to, i decided i needed to know the rest. But to do that of course i had to read the original 6, as i am sure they would be different to the show.

Book 1 was decent, though i felt the author didnt really right the big scenes very well, did not get across the shock factor that i was expecting to see in the books. The show seemed to follow the book pretty closely.

Book 2 was amazing, but mostly because Avasarala and Bobbie were even better in the books than on screen(and that takes nothing away from eithers performance which was top notch in the show). This is where show and book start to deviate, but its the characters that make the book. Naomi is almost a background character in this book i felt.

Book 3 was a total slog for me. Very different to the show where i felt season 3 was the best. The book instead concentrates on a pretty annoyingly boring character, Bull, who really does not get fleshed out much as a character. If i had not seen the TV show, book 3 would have been the end for me. Drummer does not even exist in the book, woa! and Ashford is very very different. Total snoozefest.

Here is hoping book 4 is way better, and has Avasarala and Bobbie back.

This is one of those stories you canโ€™t put down. Iโ€™m a slow reader, so I wanted to take a couple days off work to just keep going. Great characters, vivid settings, and a story that just keeps evolving with heart and conflict. I couldnโ€™t get enough of this world.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you love old time Sci Fi, this is the series for you.

James S. A. Corey (a nom-d-plume for 2 writers of this series) has put together the 'Expanse' series of Sci Fi stories with at least 8 full novels as well as other stories that also tie in. This series reminds me of the old Robert Heinlein or Arthur C. Clarke stories that got me hooked to the sci fi genre. I highly recommend this series, and I strongly suggest you read the series in the order they were published - Vol 1 through 8.

Oh My Gosh!
5.0 out of 5 stars Crisp clean copies of the original hardcovers.

These novels were not changed to resemble the TV series, which I read first before reading these books. I can't stand it when a novel is released after a movie or TV series and is not the same story as the original author wrote. For instance, the original story Into The Wild was about more than one guy when I read the non-fiction book back in the nineties. I wanted to reread that same book after seeing the movie of the same name. The book I was sent was not the same book I had read back in the nineties. It was a movie version book written after the movie. I like to compare original source material to what is written for movies and TV series so I was upset.

I liked some parts of the stories better in The Expanse novels than in the TV series, but I liked some parts of the TV series better than what was written in the original novels. For instance, there's a great line in the TV series that is not in the first novel. The Martian Captain of the big battleship that is being shot to pieces by a secret fleet of stealth ships is standing on the bridge, stunned. She says, "I didn't think we could lose."

That's a great line and scene that wasn't in the novel. Why should she've thought they would lose? She was commander of the one of the biggest martian battle ships with state of the art weapons and technology. Nobody knew about the secret fleet of stealth ships until they attacked.

I haven't seen the fourth season of the TV series of The Expanse yet, but I'm currently reading the fourth novel in the series. I'm not liking it as much as the first three. I'll give reasons why in my review of Cibola Burn.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story, doesn't precisely follow The Expanse TV series

Great fun, characters are well-draw (except for Alex Kamal, but he is OK). Avasarala is a great character, and Bobby. These books are a great, fun read, well thought-out and planned, mostly. I like the story arcs.

Please be advised the show doesn't precisely follow the books. Some characters on the show die, and the same character in the book either lives, or their arc simply goes away. Or the show changes the timeline for affect. If you plan on reading these books and trying to mentally connect the images in the tv show with the images the authors generate, you will be disappointed to some degree.

However, I am a huge fan of the show, and a huge fan of the books, and I accept the variations and creative liberties taken by the showrunners of The Expanse. If you can accept the differences, then yes, purchase the books. And, definitely watch The Expanse; the new season drops December 16th, 2020.

**Update, as I just recently finished Book 8.

These books are unputdownable. If you buy the first boxed set, you might as well keep going. Save yourself the questions, and just get the rest of them.

Also, please watch the YouTube series, "Ty and That Guy," featuring Ty Franck, one of the authors, and Wes Chatham / Amos, from the Amazon Prime series. If you are a writer, creator, aspiring person of wit, this webcast covers much of the detail about the show. The hosts, Wes and Ty, talk to each other about their creative processes; then, they interview cast and crew from the show. A great behind-the-scenes look at what happens when literature is adapted for visual media.

Unfortunately, Book 9 won't be available in the United States until September, and internationally in October.

5.0 out of 5 stars AWESOME! I devoured all 9.

I would describe this 9-book series as "perfect". It is rare that I read any ONE book and don't run into something that makes me question the writer's choice. The Expanse (all 9 books) were perfectly unpredictable without going into "random stuff happening" that the writers then had to figure out answers for.
If I could give these 10 stars, I would.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great books!

I used to read quite a bit of science fiction about 30 years ago, but lost interest. After seeing the The Expanse series (Seasons 1-3), I decided to read the books. I was pleasantly surprised at how good the writing was. Since I purchased this set, I have since read the whole series including some of the novellas. I have really enjoyed all of the books. In case it helps, Sci Fi books I have enjoyed in the past include Isaac Asimov's Foundation series, Dune (first three novels), and some Robert Heinlein. If you haven't yet watched the show, I highly recommend it. There are some differences between the books and the show, but they both compliment each other. Apologies for the terrible headline, but I can never think of a good one.
