5.0 out of 5 starsMercy gets married!
Reviewed in the United States on October 13, 2020
I love this series. It's been a while since I've been able to say that about a new to me series, but Mercy Thompson is awesome. It hits all the right buttons for me and had me wanting to immediately re-read the book even though I just finished it.

Mercy and Adam get married! WooHoo! And may I add, I love all the details of how it came about. Snorts! So off they go on their honeymoon and, as well all know, where ever Mercy goes, trouble follows. How much trouble can you get in when you're own your honeymoon in a campground?

Two words: river monster. *Smacks forehead* Trust Mercy to get right into the thick of it all. Even with her man at her side, things get pretty dangerous. Not to worry, Mercy handles it with her own usual coyote flair. O.o Along the way we get to learn more about Mercy's background that even she didn't know. ACK! With the author dangling carrots like this right and left there really was no putting down this book!

Boundless Book Reviews Sara
3.0 out of 5 starsNot my favorite
Reviewed in the United States on July 18, 2019
I originally read this on back in 2011 and gave it four stars.  Listening to it the second go around, I remembered how much I didn’t care for it compared to the first five books in the series.  Listening to them back to back makes the differences obvious.

In River Marked Mercy and Adam get married and go on their honeymoon, which I loved.  The parts with them together not fighting bad guys seems so few and far between so it was nice seeing them together being a happy couple for a while.  However, trouble always follows Mercy.  This time in the guise of a HUGE River Devil that can take over people’s minds and eat them.

What I didn’t care for in this story is it goes from an Urban Fantasy revolving around Fae, Vampires and Werewolves and morphs into Native American folklore.  The entire feel of the story changes.  I understand that Mercy is Native American, and her Coyote form comes from that heritage, but this story didn’t feel like it fit with the larger Mercy World to me.  It took a complete 180.  Bringing in the spirit animals, with Wolf especially was just weird.  How does that fit in with the larger world?   For me, it only adds more confusion, especially any time Coyote speaks and the deal about her father.  WTH.

River Marked is not my favorite, and I am rating this one 3 Boundless Stars.

The description of this book was used very good condition, I think I need to argue that fact. I am not impressed of the condition of the book that I could have bought brand new for less than a dollar more. This is poor condition not very good.

Would you like it if your honeymoon included serious elements of danger and mayhem? Few authors treat their main character with such a high degree of adversity and such a low level of fun.

I was able to put this book down several times. In fact, I started to look at finishing it as a chore. I am glad that Ms. Briggs will only be writing one book a year, I can only assume this one suffered from being written too quickly. It was almost as if someone else wrote it, since all the characters we have grown to love are suddenly out of the picture.

1.0 out of 5 stars Crucially disappointed (SPOILER alert)
Reviewed in the United States on August 25, 2011
I have really enjoyed the Mercy Thompson series with my only complaint being that there are times that Mercy seems a little bit too Mary Sue-ish -- could any more males love her, desire her, or feel an overwhelming urge to protect her? -- but overall, it's been a really great and entertaining series. I was really looking forward to reading River Marked and was on such a lo-o-ong wait list at the public library that I almost broke down and bought it myself.

I'm so glad I didn't because, wow. Wow. Is this ever an underwhelming story. It starts out with Stefan and you might be tempted to think that something interesting is getting ready to happen there, but the plot splutters and stalls out. Then the plot starts up again and moves forward as Adam and Mercy get married and go on their honeymoon. Trust me, it is the dullest and most boring honeymoon any couple has ever gone on, except that Mercy is seeing ghosts again and one dances for her, a tribal kind of Native American dance.

And then the whole story just devolves into endless tellings of Native American folk tales and legend. None of it moves the plot forward an inch. After a while, it grows so boresome that I had to force myself to keep reading. There's a river monster and it is skeery up until the point where Old Joe Coyote who isn't Old Joe Coyote but some other guy who's a friend of some other guys who may or may not be walkers -- or avatars -- like Mercy, but you aren't really sure, blahblahblah, throws Mercy into the river to call out the monster and Adam gets protective and has trouble controlling his wolf because -- and I'm not sure if you've ever heard this, so listen close -- ADAM IS AN ALPHA WOLF. If we're told that once in this book, we're told that a thousand times, even though we've been told that in every other book with a frequency that rivals Bella's telling all of us how good Edward's breath smells as she loses herself in his liquid topaz gaze. Yeah, and Adam has sharp teeth and Adam gets all aggressive and personally, I kind of wanted the river monster to eat him so that Mercy can go and get something goin' on with Stefan, who is just about the only interesting character left in this series.

And he doesn't even sparkle.

I wish I could have given this book a better rating because, as I said, I have really enjoyed this series. But this book, which feels like a short story padded with folk tales in order to bring it to novel length, just didn't interest me. Bunches of new characters are thrown in and it's hard to keep them all straight and some of them matter, but some of them don't. The ones that do matter are cloaked in so much Native American mystery that I just wanted to roll my eyes at those sneaky old Blackfoot -- or Blackfeet or WHOEVER, and it doesn't really matter all that much, but I do know now that if you're from Browning, Montana you're either one or the other but I'm still not sure which -- plus there are all those sneaky fae and we never know if Yo-Yo Girl and Uncle Mike and even Zee are on Mercy's side or not, but trust me on this: After a few hundred pages, you may just stop caring.

1.0 out of 5 stars The series is getting lazy and simple.
Reviewed in the United States on December 19, 2011
This book was a disappointment from beginning to end. The story felt so rushed and amateurish. I don't remember the other books being so devoid of substance. To be honest, it felt like I was reading the most recent Laurel K. Hamilton book. The Adam character was almost whiny with Mercy becoming the "strongest" character in the book. Frankly, having the writer give us Mercy's take in narrative and then having the other characters simply echo the writer's point felt like lazy writing. For example, having Mercy's narrative that Coyote shouldn't meet Adam's eyes let me get the picture perfectly. But then Coyote would say "He's thinking I shouldn't meet his eyes," was overly simple writing. Then, there seemed to be a lot of wasted humor that came off as petulant and whining from Jessie and again, much of the character's interaction was just reiteration of the writer's narrative. I hate to say this, but if Patricia's writing style continues like this, she should relegate herself to the "young adult" genre. There is a lower standard of talent needed in that area. It was very difficult for me to finish the book and the series is now in the same category with Anita Blake and Sookie Stackhouse. Both of those writers (Laurell K. Hamilton and Charlene Harris) have also done a very steep decent into painful, simple reading. Pains me to say it, but that's what this book felt like. Lazy, simple and an insulting read. It felt like Patricia thinks she has her fan base wrapped up and is now cranking her books out in one or two nights.

1.0 out of 5 stars Extreme dissapointment, was a fan of series
Reviewed in the United States on April 11, 2011
I am a fan of this series, and was waiting for this book with impatience. However, after reading, I am left with a really sad conclusion: the writer was out of ideas and just needed to publish something - this is the result. The plot is simplistic (to put it mildly)- there is 1 thing that happens in this book, and the whole book is about it. And that thing that happens is also trivial and cliche. There are no diversions, no character development, no new characters introduced. I hope this is just a bad seed in the bunch of otherwise great books, because if this trend continues, sadly, this awesome series is dead.

1.0 out of 5 stars An utter disappointment
Reviewed in the United States on April 15, 2011
I have absolutely loved the Mercy Thompson series since book one and was so utterly disappointed in this book that I will definitely get the next book from the library. Did the same author even write this book because it felt like Ms. Briggs was taken over by the pod people. Besides Adam and Mercy getting married (which was the only positive in this book) the rest of it was ridiculous. Lame plot, way too many insignificant people introduced, our favorite characters received little or no mention, and did I mention the extremely lame plot. I usually read her book within a day no more than two. I had to force myself to finish. Definitely get this book from the library because the price for this hardback will make you mad you bought it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Out of Ideas
Reviewed in the United States on March 19, 2012
Don't get me wrong. I have loved this series but as with most writers of this era they run out of ideas but pump out book after book chasing that extra dollar. This one had the writing style that made the first couple of books really good but you have to have an IDEA! I did pay attention to previous reviews on this book so I only had to pay mass market paperback prices. This book belongs in the $5 dollar movie bin at Walmart.

Maybe my tastes have changed but I'm off the mercy books from now on. I held on even throgh Silver Borne which I didn't care for & had high hopes for River Marked but I was bored. In this book the reader gets plenty of new characters I cared nothing for them. I just missed Stefan even though he was in the first and last chapter even that didn't save the book for me. I think the mercy series ran its course.
