5.0 out of 5 starsI wish I was Jack Reacher...
Reviewed in the United States on September 12, 2020
I wish that I could have an exciting life like Jack Reacher, how much better things would be. Instead, I am stuck living in the perpetual hell that is my pattered existence. Lockdown consists of a nagging COVID fearing and cleaning obsessed wife, who is constantly using Chlorox wipes to sanitize anything that’s not moving including my keyboard while I was using it. Add that to the two basement dwellers AKA as my sons, who only come out of their subterranean hiding place to stuff their mouths and take mandatory weekly showers. The stench from the basement is a combination of raw sewage and a sweat shop. The pile up of plates and take out containers looks like the garbage scenes from WALL-E. Jack Reacher would not stand for this. I wish things were different does anyone understand????

3.0 out of 5 starsI really don't know about this one...

Yes, I have become a Lee Child/Jack Reacher story addict and in fact only have 3 books left to read.

With that being said, in frustration, I quit reading this particular book about a third of the way through it. Why? It wasn't interesting to me to read about Jack in a security role protecting a politician. It reminded me of the old, worn and boring Hollywood story line about some government employee saving a President. (Yawn and Yawning more) Unlike most of the other books in the Reacher series, I also found this book to be off from Jack's personality and character - enough so to want to kick myself for paying $10.00 for it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing

If you want to read a manual on Secret Service procedures this is the book for you. If you want to read a good Reacher book, not so much. Long, drawn out pages on the Secret Service and a strong possible story is wasted. Even the ending lacks the usual high impact finale and is instead ho-hum. Skip this book and read the other excellent Reacher books.

3.0 out of 5 stars I really wish Child was more realistic.

I like Reacher. I really do. But Lee Child creates the most flawed scenarios and it drives me batty sometimes. Reacher has been recruited to help deflect an attempt to assassinate the new VP.

Now, if we are to believe this story, the Secret Service is employing idiots. For example, Reacher specifies a church tower that could be used by a shooter. Does the SS put a man in the tower to prevent it's possible use by an assassin? Or even to be able to see any other possible danger? No. The lead SS agent says she "hopes someone checked out the tower." Really?

Just one of many scenarios that make the plot tension seem fake to me. Just a tiniest bit of realism is necessary for me to buy into the plot. And having the Secret Service make mistakes that I, with none of the necessary skills/experience to do this job, could plan for, is ludicrous.

Further, if you manage to become the lead on VP's secret service team, you are not wimpy, scared, easily intimidated woman. In fact, you are probably more tough than most men in the position because you have to prove yourself. The secret service lead, and current Reacher Lover, is about as easily defeated emotionally and mentally as a house of cards.

Child clearly wants to be a liberal minded man about women, but he's stuck in making all of Reacher's love interests the weak girl who needs to be rescued. I wouldn't even mind that, except you don't make a woman who leads a secret service detail into that character. It just doesn't fit. In fact it grates on you - because it just doesn't fit.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, But Not Child's Best

Lee Child's super investigator, Jack Reacher, is a pretty resoursful guy; to say the least. However, since he doesn't have his own credit cards, he must reley on a super female cop type to help him move about the country. I might say that she performs other duties as well in her role as investigator helper. As the book progresses, one wonders if this team will end up in a romantic situation. The pair team up initally to find holes in the newly elected vice predident's security. Oh, but there is an ulterior motive in that their employer, the Secret Service, wants to see just how good or bad their security proceedures are. They find out fast. Then Reacher and company tackle the job of figuring out who the bad guys are as they try to read "between the lines" of various threatening letters. The plot thickens and as other murders take place, the reader wonders just who are the bad guys. I wouldn't call this book mesmerizing and the suspense does not become "unbearable"; as some might want the reader to believe. However, it is a pretty good tale. My only real criticism is that the book dragged out to 549 pages. The writer could have accomplished this story in quite a few less pages. The last 26 pages were fast moving and I really enjoyed this part of the book.

3.0 out of 5 stars but it is exceptionally annoying. However

For a writer who appears to be so very knowledgeable about firearms, there is a very flawed assumption about the mechanics of firearms that plays a major roll the plot. It doesn't spoil the book, but it is exceptionally annoying.

However, the writing is good, the story flows well, and there is only the one gaping hole mentioned above. One of the things i like about the Reacher books is the ever changing setting. With the protagonist always on the move, the writer gets to play with different settings and seems to cover them rather well.

3.0 out of 5 stars Petey's bookies

This was enjoyable as all Reacher novels are but there seemed to be something lacking in it. Perhaps it was too much over-play with the female Secret Service agent, but I'm not sure. I liked the plot of the story and truthfully, I was at a loss as to who the bad guys were and what their motive was. This was good as my opinion continuously changed and in the end, I had it all wrong. I like that aspect of the book but it just lacked suspense for me. A good book but I wouldn't recommend it to friends and family. There are definitely far better Reacher books out there to choose from and recommend.

Old SF Soldier
3.0 out of 5 stars Tedious, at Times
Reviewed in the United States on August 29, 2013

Jack Reacher lacks plausibility as all the MP's I ever knew never did much beyond writing up speeding tickets and DUI's. Coming across as some kind of super soldier is pretty strange.

The author's storytelling is disjointed and disconnected at times, You have to wait until the last couple of chapters to discover something that was obvious in the third or fourth chapter. The idea that all the quick thinkers in the FBI, Secret Service, and Jack Reacher couldn't figure out the source of their problem was a bit farfetched.

The author needs to tune up his methods of telling a story or retire.

3.0 out of 5 stars New Toothbrush?

A different tale with a different feel for Jack. I finished this book two weeks ago and decided to let the book digest for a little while before jumping right into a review, as I usually do. I didn't like this one nearly as much as the previous installations in the series. It was a little too "global" for Jack Reacher. I also wondered about his toothbrush. Is this a new travel toothbrushes? He never made it back to the bunkhouse to get his old one in Echo Burning....

I really liked book five. I found this book very boring for about the first 60 %. It got a little better but I was very disappointed in it. I don't think it's worth reading if you haven't read it yet. Just skip it and go to the next book in the Jack Reacher series.

3.0 out of 5 stars characters under fire were not all that interesting

Not one of Lee's better ones. I didn't like the characters Reacher was looking after. They were not of the same cloth his previous ones were. This was my 6th Reacher book in a row. Need to take a break to appreciate him more. Reacher was still the same roamed and take what life offers you, fight the bad guys, but the same passion wasn't there. I like to know how characters come into his life. So I hope his side kick comes back in somewhere, she seemed interesting.
