5.0 out of 5 starsFinally a protagonist who exhibits realism
Reviewed in the United States on December 17, 2021
I found this author after reading the terminal list series, and being recommended by that author. To compare the gray man to The terminal list books. They share certain similarities, but what I find in my opinion that the gray man exhibits a bit more realistic views of the world. I would classify him more an anti-hero, compared to a more traditional hero of James in the terminal list. It is hard to compare on target as a stand alone book as the book series thus far flows well as one continuous story from book to book. It’s not a book you can just start reading n without having read the gray man, nor would you want to. Unlike the terminal list who’s protagonist though is appealing, is more relatable with people of military background. The gray man, can reach a larger audience as he appears less a product of institution and more a rebellious character untamed by a master.

1.0 out of 5 starsWay “Off” Target
Reviewed in the United States on January 19, 2021
The author’s first installment, The Gray Man,” was silly but at least it was entertaining. On Target, though, is just plain bad!

Court Gentry has now morphed into a pill-popping junkie. A former CIA special operative gone rogue (but continues his association with his former government employer as a contractor, of sorts) who never seems to know who he is or what he really wants. Despite the string of tragedies he must endure, all while trying to win the eventual pardon of his CIA lords and masters, he is able to somehow, drug addiction and conflicting morality aside, press on with the absurd kidnapping mission. Yeah, right!

The characters dialogue is terribly sophomoric and filled with what attempts to pass as normal conversation between alpha males during the heat of combat. Having been there, I can say that cute and funny words, especially as rounds are buzzing past your ears and impacting objects all around you, are seldom (if ever) heard.

I had to put this one down before finishing it.

I think Mr. Greaney has the potential to be a first-class writer. He has the tools to be right up there with some of the best in the business, if he spends a bit more time in character development and adult dialogue.

I’ll give the third book in the Gray Man series a look. If, however, it continues along the same vein, I’ll be done with it all. Three strikes and you’re out!

4.0 out of 5 stars Who Does the Gray Man Work For Now?

Ex-CIA, Assassin Court Gentry, aka, Gray Man, is the second book of the series gets involved in a Russian mafia scheme to oust the dictator of Sudan who has been responsible for the atrocities in Darfur. When we last saw the Gray Man, it appeared he was going to be working for LaurentGroup, but apparently something changed. While agreeing to this Russian's assignment, he gets ambushed by a CIA team, that would like something different. As Court a target, by the CIA and other world clandestine organizations, the CIA, has agreed to take him off their hit list, if he agrees, which involves the same dictator, but instead of assassinating him, they want Court to kidnap him for the ICC, International Criminal Court.

A majority of this book takes place in Sudan. Greaney in his sophomore offer has improved and it makes for a good read, though again, repetitiveness of phrases can get old, and at times the story drags or becomes too unbelievable. But hey, its fiction.

One big difference between the Gray Man, and other spy/espionage/thriller novels I've read, is that the Gray Man has a bigger "vice" that works against him at times, though this did not show up as much in the first novel.

Find it different than say Mitch Rapp, Scot Harvath or Jason Bourne, but entertaining nonetheless.

Decent book though he needed better research when detailing the mini sub episode. You dont feel pressure increases in a sub as you descend. The inside of a sub is not open to the water pressure. Were that not the case submariners would get the bends on a quick ascent so Gentry would have experienced no pressure change as the sub descended.
Also doubt many people would try to save someone bent on killing them though I guess in the end he WAS instrumental in helping him pilot the sub.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gray Man Continues And Is Involved Again
Reviewed in the United States on December 2, 2018

On Target picks up at a point in time after book 1 but with the same concept - Court Gentry is again asked (?) to kidnap and/or kill the President of Sudan. Much of the story takes place in the desolate and desperate country of Sudan and involves Gray Man working for and against a Russian mobster and a black ops CIA team. As in Book 1 Gentry seems to survive when no one else can or should. Without revealing too much, On Target ends with Gray Man disappearing for his own good. Another reviewer gave the book 4 stars, perhaps for the same reason I do. I would like a book to conclude entirely, but in this case there are a couple of persons not mentioned in the end such that the reader is a bit in the dark. Perhaps one or more will resurface in future books. Nonetheless, aside from the outrageous price of nearly $12 for Book 3, I will probably “bite my tongue” and go for #3.

4.0 out of 5 stars An assassin with moral conflict
Reviewed in the United States on June 10, 2018

The Gray Man, Court Gentry, is a paid assassin working for American clandestine ops and other groups as an independent contractor. I was not sure how enamored I could be for a protagonist who's profession is murder for hire but read anyway for the adventure this genre presents, the fascinating supporting cast of characters and the ins and outs of intrigue and survival Court masters. . It is doubtful that such a man would have inner turmoil and moral conflicts when he is diverted to rescue a woman working for an international justice agency. Wouldn't he just dismiss her as collateral damage of little significance ? When he apprehends his target, the criminal President of Sudan, would he become morally challenged over the completion of his mission ? A real killer would not have such inner conflict but Gentry does and I suppose that adds to the unique nature of this complicated protagonist. The descriptions of Sudan and Darfur were eye opening - such rat holes of countries with people condemned to and resigned to poverty and war. Other reviewers have suggested to read the series in order and so do I because Court's past has links to each next novel which would be insightful for the reader to know.

4.0 out of 5 stars Character Rounding Out
Reviewed in the United States on September 18, 2018

The second of the Gray Man series and some of the character short comings of the first book begin coming into focus in the second. For the most part "On Target" moves very quickly and holds your interest from the very start. Unlike the first book this one ends fairly unsatisfyingly, however. The author seems to deliberately leave ends left untied, perhaps to use to pad the followup Gray Man book. I, personally, would prefer that glaring items find some sort of resolution in the book that I've invested my time, rather than being used to perhaps spike sales for the followup book(s). I'm probably going to continue on with the series anyway, and I've nearly talked myself into lowering my rating from 4-stars, to 3. However, the pacing, character development, and just the right amount of situation detail prompt me to leave my review at 4-stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pricey series

Well written, the action takes awhile to take off but then it's crazy Blackhawk Down time. Court Gentry, the Gray ;Man, is not the most interesting character in the genre, but he suffices. My complaint, such as it is, is the pricing. I get that the first book is cheapest to introduce readers to the series, and the second book doubles that price, But the following books in the series are $10-12 each, and that's too much even for a readable series like this. Just no.

Court Gentry (aka The Gray Man) was an assassin, first for the CIA, then for other organizations, from Russia and other countries. Court had one problem for one reason or another they all ended up trying to kill him! Now the CIA wanted him again to kidnapped a Sudan’s President that was responsible for genocide in Darfur. Betrayal, poor planning, and everything going wrong plagued him, but he didn’t give up. I could put this book down with no problem it didn’t keep my interest for the long run; interest would come and go. Good enough for four stars though.

Court has got to be the toughest dude on this planet. I wouldn't survive half of his injuries. And he still manages to do the right thing. Mark is a good writer that knows how to spin a good story.

While another action packed novel that really kept my pulse pounding I found it to be disjointed. Hard to follow in that I had to reread sections at times. Sloppy writing. The book should have ended sooner in my opinion. It did have great enjoyable moments to it and I think the author has great promise so I'm going for the next book. I really hope he does more with the Gray Man aspect of the character. For a supposed gray man he seems to make himself known.

Seemed to take a while before any real action, he had less wounds than first book albeit a festering stinky one, then the end after all the final action it sorta just peters off…but still a good read
