5.0 out of 5 starsI did not need another passion!
Reviewed in the United States on December 15, 2021
I’ve never read this genre of fiction before Jack Carr hit the scene with The Terminal List last year. After consuming his four novels, I asked Jack on Instagram what was similar to his books and he told me Brad Thor and Mark Greaney. After two books from each, I think Mark is my favorite. Behind Jack. Jack is the most technical, operator, fire arm enthusiast oriented of the three. Mark is second. And Brad would be third in that field of description, with Brad being a little more general and commercially popular. Jack also mentioned Stephen Hunter and recommended his latest, Basil’s War. That was my least favorite, as I found it difficult to comprehend Stephen’s writing style and it’s nothing like the other three authors.

1.0 out of 5 starsThis "work" is like reading a bad comic book written in crayon by a preschooler

When I read the first book in this series I knew based on the reviews it would be junk for the most part but reviewers said it was entertaining so I bought it and read it. It did entertain me. But it was not a great book. I'd say it was mindless time wasting, something you might read in the john.

Book 2, the premise of meeting a woman, wanting her out of the way, getting her out of the way then deciding to save her all alone in a foreign country and using items that just fall into the antiheros path like ... like ... like ... magic, is so over the top I just deleted it from my Kindle.

Ridiculous is one thing, stupid is a horse of a different color. You'd have to be desperate or extremely sick of watching TV re reuns to read this author.

Judging by the reviews, you'll have lots of company.

1.0 out of 5 stars Way “Off” Target
Reviewed in the United States on January 19, 2021

The author’s first installment, The Gray Man,” was silly but at least it was entertaining. On Target, though, is just plain bad!

Court Gentry has now morphed into a pill-popping junkie. A former CIA special operative gone rogue (but continues his association with his former government employer as a contractor, of sorts) who never seems to know who he is or what he really wants. Despite the string of tragedies he must endure, all while trying to win the eventual pardon of his CIA lords and masters, he is able to somehow, drug addiction and conflicting morality aside, press on with the absurd kidnapping mission. Yeah, right!

The characters dialogue is terribly sophomoric and filled with what attempts to pass as normal conversation between alpha males during the heat of combat. Having been there, I can say that cute and funny words, especially as rounds are buzzing past your ears and impacting objects all around you, are seldom (if ever) heard.

I had to put this one down before finishing it.

I think Mr. Greaney has the potential to be a first-class writer. He has the tools to be right up there with some of the best in the business, if he spends a bit more time in character development and adult dialogue.

I’ll give the third book in the Gray Man series a look. If, however, it continues along the same vein, I’ll be done with it all. Three strikes and you’re out!

4.0 out of 5 stars An assassin with moral conflict
Reviewed in the United States on June 10, 2018

The Gray Man, Court Gentry, is a paid assassin working for American clandestine ops and other groups as an independent contractor. I was not sure how enamored I could be for a protagonist who's profession is murder for hire but read anyway for the adventure this genre presents, the fascinating supporting cast of characters and the ins and outs of intrigue and survival Court masters. . It is doubtful that such a man would have inner turmoil and moral conflicts when he is diverted to rescue a woman working for an international justice agency. Wouldn't he just dismiss her as collateral damage of little significance ? When he apprehends his target, the criminal President of Sudan, would he become morally challenged over the completion of his mission ? A real killer would not have such inner conflict but Gentry does and I suppose that adds to the unique nature of this complicated protagonist. The descriptions of Sudan and Darfur were eye opening - such rat holes of countries with people condemned to and resigned to poverty and war. Other reviewers have suggested to read the series in order and so do I because Court's past has links to each next novel which would be insightful for the reader to know.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pricey series

Well written, the action takes awhile to take off but then it's crazy Blackhawk Down time. Court Gentry, the Gray ;Man, is not the most interesting character in the genre, but he suffices. My complaint, such as it is, is the pricing. I get that the first book is cheapest to introduce readers to the series, and the second book doubles that price, But the following books in the series are $10-12 each, and that's too much even for a readable series like this. Just no.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mark Greaney's Gray Man
Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2016

The Gray Man is an assassin with principles. He kills the bad guys. He kills in self defense. He makes the impossible possible. He is one real cool customer. And at the same time he himself is being hunted down to be killed by other government agencies (USA is the lead hunter). This book is the SECOND of five of Gray Man novels. I've read all five. Greaney really does in depth research for all of his books. Greaney goes all over the world looking, talking, interviewing to really add a "now" reality to plot Gray Man's weird look at the life he leads. And and all the twists and turns that happens...you'll find yourself with five or six pages to finish and Greaney hits you with twists. When you read about The Gray Man, his story ain't over until it's over.............................................Be sure you start with book #1 (The Gray Man) then in sequence to book #5 (Back Blast).

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally a protagonist who exhibits realism
Reviewed in the United States on December 17, 2021

I found this author after reading the terminal list series, and being recommended by that author. To compare the gray man to The terminal list books. They share certain similarities, but what I find in my opinion that the gray man exhibits a bit more realistic views of the world. I would classify him more an anti-hero, compared to a more traditional hero of James in the terminal list. It is hard to compare on target as a stand alone book as the book series thus far flows well as one continuous story from book to book. It’s not a book you can just start reading n without having read the gray man, nor would you want to. Unlike the terminal list who’s protagonist though is appealing, is more relatable with people of military background. The gray man, can reach a larger audience as he appears less a product of institution and more a rebellious character untamed by a master.

5.0 out of 5 stars Is The GRAY MAN developing a conscience?

Seemed to take a while before any real action, he had less wounds than first book albeit a festering stinky one, then the end after all the final action it sorta just peters off…but still a good read

I was about to put it back on the the shelf at the grocery store when I saw on the cover that Lee Child loves the Gray Man. As a fan of Lee Child I had to buy the book. I’m glad I did since I now love the Gray Man series too!

I finished the book in a few days and have already finished the first book of the series.

I think I may like the Gray Man a bit more than Reacher. Much more action.

3.0 out of 5 stars A bit heavy on the ancillary story lines.

I found the foul-mouthed protagonist (Gray Man) a bit more likeable than in Book One. And the techno/politico-speak will set their respective admirers a-flutter. This book gets three stars (as compared to the first book's four stars) simply because so much of the time was spent down in the weeds of setting back stories and placing subplots into the text that seemed to my unappreciative mind as a bit closer to "filler" than necessary. Weed that stuff out and it's a pretty good read (catch that? 😁).

Decent book though he needed better research when detailing the mini sub episode. You dont feel pressure increases in a sub as you descend. The inside of a sub is not open to the water pressure. Were that not the case submariners would get the bends on a quick ascent so Gentry would have experienced no pressure change as the sub descended.
Also doubt many people would try to save someone bent on killing them though I guess in the end he WAS instrumental in helping him pilot the sub.
