Jill I. Shtulman
5.0 out of 5 starsAn unputdowable family saga full of love, heartaches, and wisdom
Reviewed in the United States on April 11, 2019
Diving into a 550-page novel – as opposed to, say, a 300-page novel – is the difference between a dalliance and a full-blown commitment. You have to really like these characters to spend time in their lives and inside their heads for days at a time. It may not be the most fun you’ve ever , but it has to be darn close.

So let’s start here: I liked the Sorenson family. I liked its messiness, quirkiness, heartaches and triumphs. And I didn’t regret one single hour that I was immersed in their world.

Marilyn and David are the fortunate couple who quickly intuit that they’re right for each other and present a portraiture of stability and passion throughout the years. Their four daughters must continually strive to replicate that kind of love in their own lives and each of them has her own challenges to overcome. The oldest, Wendy, leaps out from the pages with her oversized personality and wry comments. Her “Irish twin” Violet is far more traditional and yoked to pursuing perfection in all she does. Then there’s Liza, a psychologist married to a depressed and tattoo sleeved software developer, and the youngest, Grace, who finds herself being left out of the sisterhood due to her “last child” standing.

The relationship among the four sisters pulses with authenticity. Claire Lombardo writes, “The only portrait you could ever get really of one sister from another, tinged inevitably with jealousy and double standards and affection as deep and intractable as marrow.” When Jonah, the love child of one of the sisters is suddenly thrust into their lives, some of the fault lines are widened. All the tumultuous elements that come part and parcel of being a family are here – the secrets, the illnesses, the childrearing, the unexpected happenings that knock down carefully planned lives.

I did have a few quibbles. The characters sometimes talk in staccato to a fault. (Example: “Hey honey, is Ryan_Has he…” or But they really—You’d be surprised how they grow on you.”) It’s authentic, yes, but also overdone. There were some parts that were a stretch (why would daughter Liza choose a chronically depressed partner who gave her little emotionally?) But these are, indeed, quibbles. Claire Lombardo has the writing chops and her book is page-turning.

I purchased this book based on the reviews and I am sorry to say that I wish I had waited for a copy from the library instead of spending my money on it. I realize that I am in the minority here amongst the 5 star reviews but this book just isn't doing anything for me. I am up to the beginning part entitled Fall. I am already tired of the constant drama between the sisters and their negativity toward one another. So far there is not one moment of happiness or brightness in this book and I feel like I am slogging through to finish it. These four sisters are beyond dysfunctional to the point of unbelief. That aside, my biggest complaint is the language. Having read tons of books in my lifetime I consider myself pretty resilient to reading (and casting aside) the use of foul language and sex scenes but this novel takes the use of the F word way too far with it being used on practically every page and many times on a single page or two. I don't see any advantage to the continual use of such a derogatory word. If anything it is taking away from the book. I will finish reading it but I certainly won't be recommending it to anyone.

1.0 out of 5 stars Overworked and annoying...hard to get through

This book is a beast. I felt like I had read a thousand pages and was only 10% in. That being said, I found it annoying, over worked and fraught with too much detail to be interesting. The language was over the top and felt like it was overcompensating for annoying characters. This book easily could have been 200 pages shorter, and likely much more interesting. I skipped about 60% of the book and don’t feel I missed anything. When I jumped back in at the end, I found myself simultaneously asking “what’s the point” and being relieved that it was done. Wouldn’t recommend this book to anyone.

1.0 out of 5 stars Almost unbearably tedious

If you have been hankering for a novel that is about 10 times too long for its flimsy plot, has a raft of awful self-indulgent characters who torment each other, and features spoiled women crying copiously on just about every other page, bingo. If I hadn't been on a series of long plane flights and no other new Kindle books downloaded, I never could have finished it. The only good moment was when one of the (few, sane, male) characters said to one of the (many, awful, female) characters, "How is it possible for you to be so emotionally ignorant?" Indeed. The only bad thing about Kindle is that you can't throw a book across the room.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not sure why I'm still reading this

I was expecting a literary novel, but it's really more of a family drama, not soap opera exactly, but not very insightful. The writing is clear, but there's nothing special about the writing style. The characters are OK, not that compelling. I wish I hadn't purchased this book.

This is a fifties-like story with a fabulous dad, beautiful, always pregnant daughters or wife, spoiled girls and beautiful houses. No birth control in sight and love, love, love. Author knows how to really work the formula. I quit after third way through it. Wish she would take her talent and get a real grown up story together.

Since when can we feel sorry for 4 daughters because they think their precious lives are screwed up because their parents were just too happy and in love. Get over yourselves and them quickly in this book. Jonah is the only real character to really think about.

Kelsey Larsen
5.0 out of 5 stars This is a must-read book, especially if you love family sagas!

The Most Fun We Ever Had is the story of the Sorensons—a Chicago-based family with four adult daughters, Wendy, Violet, Liza and Gracie, and their still-madly-in-love parents, Marilyn and David.

The Sorensons always assumed their family’s problems were pretty run-of-the-mill—potential torrid love affairs, life-threatening overdoses and sociopathic children. But when a long-buried secret emerges, the entire family has to question how “normal” they really are.

Diving into the gritty, and often dark, histories of each family member, this book is an unputdownable story of the pain we bring to those who love us the most.

WHY THIS IS A MUST-READ: This book had me gripped from the very first page. I laughed. I cried. I didn’t want it to ever end. This has been one of my favorite books of the year (easily as amazing as Where the Crawdads Sing and Daisy Jones & The Six!).

Claire Lombardo is a master of words, capable of running you through the gamut of emotions in just a single page. I fell in love with this family and their story. This is a must-read!

1.0 out of 5 stars TERRIBLE READ.

I bought this book because the local library had a waiting list of 32 people to read it. Bought it and can not read it.
Foul language is totally unnecessary. No character ever finishes a sentence. Characters are not described well so you never know who you are reading about. Run on sentences that last a full paragraph. Very difficult read. Gave up after 100 pages. Didn't grab my attention at all and I am a voracious reader and will read just about anything. It got good reviews but certainly not from me or my reading friends.

I did not like this book at all. I tried but found most of the characters unpleasant and not likeable at all. Jonah showed promise and I wanted to finish the book to see if he was finally able to get accepted by this selfish and self-centered family. I quit about 40% in. I tried again to pick it up but found I just didn't care about these people or their story.
