Amazing book to describe prayer to a little one!!! Gives great examples on how to pray/helpful words to use when praying for different reasons. It even has a little section at the end of each page to have your little fill in the blank and say a prayer. 5 stars!
God Gave Us Prayer, written by Lisa Tawn Bergren and illustrated by David Hohn, can be used as a bedtime story, a tool for teaching the spiritual discipline of prayer, and as part of a Sunday School or homeschool curriculum. The interactions between Mama and Little Pup affirm God hears and cares about His children, while showing that it is safe and good to ask questions regarding the various ways can pray.
Mama even gives examples of prayers as she walks home with Little Pup. These written prayers can help young readers build a strong foundation for communicating with God, even when it's hard. When Little Pup confesses he's done something wrong, Mama teaches him the importance of seeking forgiveness from God and the one he hurt with his wrong actions. This scene can help little readers understand God's character and develop stronger relationships with God and others.
Upon their return home, Mama and Little Pup enjoy dinner with Papa and welcome him into the conversation about prayer. By demonstrating that God's children pray in different ways, Bergren reminds young readers to be authentic as they approach God on a personal level through prayer.
God Gave Us Prayer creates a safe space for young readers to communicate with God and share God with their friends. The notes to "Little Reader" include a fill-in-the-blank option that can help young ones learn to process emotions and communicate with God on a deeper, more personal level.
The last Little Reader note invites little ones to reflect on Jesus' character and ask to be transformed in His likeness.
God Gave Us Prayer can help children, and adults, become more comfortable with communicating with God and trusting that He hears, cares, and is working in and through their lives.
Due to the amount of text and the interactive component of God Gave Us Prayer, I recommend this book be read aloud by an adult or with an adult so that young readers can ask questions and interact with the text. God Gave Us Prayer would also make a great tool for teaching about prayer and developing a deeper relationship with God. The tone of this story is soothing and sweet, which makes it a good bedtime choice. However, I recommend reading God Gives Us Prayer during the day or when little ones are not too tired at bedtime.
Lisa Tawn Bergren has done it again. She’s written a masterpiece for the Master. This delightfully illustrated picture book, God Gave Us Prayer, is one of the best books I’ve ever seen for explaining the concept of prayer to little ones. With adorable animal characters that celebrate a diverse cast of critter friends, Little Pup learns from Mama about how God hears our prayers, the kind of prayers we can learn to say, and how praying is simply talking with God who wants to have a relationship with each one of us. I'm so glad I received a copy of this new treasure to review.
