How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

5.0 out of 5 starsI bought this for my son sand ended up engrossed
Reviewed in the United States on May 4, 2013
This had made into a movie (Brendan Fraiser) and I'd watched it a couple of years ago, so unfortunately for me I had all of the actors' faces in mind throughout the book and left little to my imagination there, but at least they casted it very well!!(and closely to the book's description - for the most part.

The PLOT deviates some, so even if you've seen the movie, you'd be missing out not reading Funke's wonderful writing

You get the plot from other reviews', so I will leave you with this. There are NOT too many books of this genre that are truly original. This is. There are not too many books out there that don't fall into some campy dialogue. This doesn't.

I go through books, Kindle and otherwise, and after reading Inkheart, I went and purchased the trilogy hardcopy (of which I'm terribly discerning about what takes up space) because I think this is a classic.

My son just read it as well, he's 8, but reading beyond his 2nd grade level, he finished and immediately asked when he's getting the next one!! And has asked me twice, "Is it here yet?"

I think it's a testament to Funke's writing, that she can so capture myself and my son so completely.

3.0 out of 5 starsNot Harry Potter

If your YA reader is looking for a story like Harry Potter, this is not it. Although the premise (chacters coming out of books while book is being read outloud) is an outstanding idea, this book is extreamly over written. At over 500 pages the story keeps getting bogged down. This story is slow and after 380 pages, i just couldn't continue. I am sorry to say (after all the authors hard work) that I as an adult I DNF this book, and would nt recommend this story to my YA as she would be bored with the slow pace. I suggest tbat the author speed up the pace and stop repeating so much.

3.0 out of 5 stars For once the movie was better than the book
Reviewed in the United States on August 20, 2009

I watched Inkheart the movie and that got me wanting to read the book. Everyone always says, "The book is better than the movie". But, not with this first book in the Inkheart series. It was drug out, I kept thinking, "just get on with it!" I think it has great characters and the plot is well-constructed, but it's just too drug out. My husband is on the second book and he says it's much better so far. Meggie is going to be doing some writing herself and it has some of the actual Inkworld in it's plot. I would recommend this book because it is a fun book, but just beware you'll want to get to the end sooner rather than later to start book 2.

(BTW, for those who have seen the movie and want to read the book like I did, the book is nothing like the movie!! Same concepts and characters, but way different!)

I bought the books, because I loved the movie.

It’s not often that I can say the movie was better.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not exactly what I had expected

The book is well written, and Cornelia Funke is a creative author. Nevertheless, I saw the movie before I read the book, and it is a rare occasion when I prefer the movie to the book. Maybe it is due to the fact that I had expected to find the same dream-like quality in the book that I had found in the movie. The movie filled me with images of beauty, even though there are dark moments in it, but the book is too dark for my liking. Also, it felt less imaginative in contrast. I expected more, and I found less. Besides, I really don't like Meggie in the book. She is a kind of spoiled girl who behaves stupidly most of the time. I couldn't connect with her.

The book was falling apart when I got it. I would turn a page and it would try and rip out. I will haven't read it because I'm afraid all the pages will fall out if I do.

I liked this book but I didn't LOVE it. It's a gripping story, it's original, but it's geared to ?youth? and it's very disturbing. I don't know if I would want to read this unless I was at least 15 or 16. Also it's not the best writing but it's also translated I believe so that may affect it. I have a personal pet peeve with excessive similes. Every other sentences is a simile. Like, as, like, as, like ,as, It annoys me. Just tell the story without all the "imagery". Especially the book similes. Anyway, I did finish it, it has a little bit of a strange plot hole at the end, and clearly that's meant to carry the story to the next chapter, Inkspell. I recommend it as a story/read for older teens and adults, but I was vetting it for my child (6yrs) and I won't be reading it to her.

This was a book really designed to inspire imagination in its young readers, as much as there was a lot to like about this book, it is quite long and at times a little drawn out but DEFINATELY worth reading for any young reader.
