I wish we didn't have to buy this for my daughter, but we did. Her situation was also physical. Her "best friend" would react negatively and sometimes physically when she didn't get her way. I didn't realize how bad it was until she came home with one of the worst black eyes I've ever seen. My heart literally broke into a million pieces when my 7 year old broke down in tears because she was worried her "friend" wouldn't be her friend anymore if she got her in trouble. She was also worried that all the kids at school would hate her if her "friend" got in trouble.
This book was recommended to me by a friend of mine and I really think it helped, even though the situation was different. The last 2 months my daughter has built new and healthy relationships with children who don't try to control her.

Bought this for my six year old grand-daughter who was having stomachaches in school due to her best friend being mean to her. As I read the book she kept exclaiming, that's just like what happened to me! Just like me! Now a week later she has two new best friends. She still plays with her old best friend but she no longer goes up to her daily and allows her to hurt her feelings. Very empowering.

This is a great book for children who are new to navigating friendships on their own. Our daughter is 9, is right in that interesting space where we are trying not to be helicopter parents, but still wanting her to understand friends don’t treat one another a certain way. When you’re 9 it can be confusing.

As a school social worker I found this to be one of the best books to help kids deal with bullying. I especially like that it deals with girl bullying which had been overlooked for a long time. It teaches a girl who is being bullied by a friend who turns on her how to handle it. It is also great to teach bystanders how to resist bullies and support targets of bullying.

The protagonist goes through a series of feelings and actions, until she realizes that she can stand up to her bully, and find new friends.

I used it in the classroom, in groups and individually. I found many ways to help the boys relate to this book, despite it having only female characters. I loved the illustrations as much as the dialog.
