Cheryl Mussatto's book The Nourished Brain is a well written guide to how the brain works and what it needs to be healthy. As we live longer with the help of modern medicine and the ongoing threat of diseases such as Alzheimers it is a great advantage to have this book as a tool for keeping your brain in healthy condition.
Cheryl describes how the MIND diet is beneficial and how it works. She describes what nutrients are essential to a healthy brain and what foods to avoid, how to meal plan, and what foods to stock in your pantry and refrigerator. The book not only focuses on food intake but overall healthier lifestyle changes to keeping your brain in top shape. The recipes are easy to prepare and very delicious ! Highly recommend this book for anyone whom wants to educate themselves on how to keep your brain healthy!
I am actually a dietitian at the hospital (Rush) where much of the research in this book comes from, but I work in a different specialty and admittedly don't know a lot about nutrition for brain health. The author does a great job summarizing the research and turning it into actionable dietary changes. I especially liked the clear list of foods proven to benefit the brain, and strategies for incorporating them daily. Considering the prevalence of Alzheimer's and dementia at this point, I think this is a relevant read for everyone.
Cheryl does a great job at helping one understand the stages of dementia and Alzheimer's as well as relating what research has been done, and is onging, on this health issue. The anecdotal comments throughout the book, from caregivers of Alzheimer's patients, past and present, personalized the information. Cheryl has a real talent for translating the scientific nutrition information that abounds on eating healthy for our brain into meaningful eating guidelines that are easy to implement in one's diet. Recipes add a special touch.
Anyone, no matter their health background, could find a ton of wonderful, easy to understand information about how to decrease their chance of Alzheimers or Dementia. The beginning of every chapter includes personal anecdotes from families who have gone through these diseases, and that is by far my favorite part! I also especially enjoy the easy to follow recipes in the back of the book. It's always hard to know if a recipe really does include the nutrients my family needs, so having these as part of the book is very helpful!
This book was easy to read and written for all to understand. I have read this author's articles on facebook and enjoy learning from them almost daily. This book helps us understand the brain and its connection with food and dementia. It has lots of yummy healthy recipes to try. I highly recommend this book and any other articles or books she has written.
This is an easy-to-read, very practical book about the connection between the foods we eat and the development of Alzheimer's and dementia. It is full of many suggestions about healthy food purchases and meal planning ideas. It has a great selection of healthy recipes, with detailed prep instructions and colored pictures of the food prepared. I highly recommend this book!
