My children love the new Blue’s Clues, so I was excited to find this book for my toddler. I am a preschool teacher, so we have many, many books, but sometimes the best way to get kids interested in reading is to get books with their favorite characters in them.
My daughter likes this book, but I’m not as keen. It is a counting book that has no numbers in it? The numbers are written in word form. For example, it will ask you to count how many cupcakes they brought to the picnic, the word ‘nine’ is written on the page. I can understand the intent is for the children to count the cupcakes (one-to-one correspondence), not identify the number, but these skills go hand-in-hand (cardinality). Ideally, it would be self-correcting. A lift-the-flap with the numeral underneath would solve this issue. Additionally, parents are reading this book to their children and will inevitably encourage their child to, or count with their child.
Overall, I think this book is poorly done and I don’t recommend it.
