How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

5.0 out of 5 starsA New Understanding of Will - And Maybe Yourself
Reviewed in the United States on November 9, 2021
I am a big fan of biographical works and of both Mark Manson and Will Smith; and yet, this book leaves me feeling bittersweet. Will Smith has spent decades in our most beloved cultural works: Fresh Prince, Hitch, I Am Legend, Bad Boys, and Big Willie style to name a few. In many ways the thing we loved most about him wasn't his incredible catalog of work, but the "effortless" charisma that allowed him to take over the world. This book cuts directly against that image.

This book amounts to look behind the curtain of what made this icon who he is, warts and all. While it is incredibly insightful and well written - those of us who liked having him up on a pedestal for being superhuman will realize that he is imperfect like us all.

What you get in this book is life experiences from Will wrapped around singular ideas like "fear", "Power" and "Hope" and he uses those themes and stories to teach us lessons about life. This book left me with a new understanding of Will and myself - in my opinion, that's all a great biographical works should do.

Matthew J. McGaughey
1.0 out of 5 starsShameless Bragging Taken to a New Level
Reviewed in the United States on November 23, 2021
I've always been a fan of Will Smith's work, and I just assumed that he must be the decent guy he usually portrays. There's certainly no denying his impressive achievements in reaching the pinnacle of music, television, and film, a feat few have duplicated. The first part of this book was gripping, and the author comes across as honest and humble. The remainder of the book quickly degenerates into what can only be described as a monumental bragathon. We are repeatedly bludgeoned with tedious descriptions of how he is the most successful actor in the world and the greatest movie star of all time. Even if there is some truth to these assertions, I found them distasteful and even a little embarrassing. And as for the drivel about his ayahuasca trips, well.. words fail me. If you are already convinced that Will Smith is on the same level as Muhammad Ali and Nelson Mandela, you will love this book. If not, you may get a case of indigestion. Boo.

1.0 out of 5 stars Really?
Reviewed in the United States on November 24, 2021

Will Smith, the answer to both questions is NO. Not funny.

As far as Mr Smith being the biggest movie star in the world - really? There are names that come to mind - Bogart, Bergman, Crow, Olivier, Hepburn, Poitier, Streep, Dench, Hopkins, and maybe Maggie Smith but Will Smith? The arrogance of the man floors me.

While I appreciate people who have some confidence in themselves I just mainly wanted to put up a sign in front of Will Smith with one word on it - RESPECT. That one word didn't appear until near then of the book and Mr Smith wasn't the one using it.

I guess it's good Will Smith told his truth but it felt to me as if he was bragging about doing it, and he really has little to brag about from my perspective. Arrogant, a poor listener and generally disrespectful of everyone on the planet but himself. I liked him before I read the book.

Right now Will Smith is showing up everywhere so it feels a little like he is desperate to make himself visible, like maybe he is trying to keep himself in the public eye because he's afraid he's not as big a star as he wants to be.

1.0 out of 5 stars Self-important drivel

I bought this because I like some of what Will posts on Instagram about self-reliance. This book just didn't work for me at all. Just page after page of things like him calling himself one of the best actors in the world (a joke). In the end he's a creepy scientologist who sets a bad example as a parent with very troubled, entitled children and a bad marriage full of repeated infidelity. The Smiths are quickly reaching Kardashian country with their constant public babbling about their private lives.

1.0 out of 5 stars Keep it 💯
Reviewed in the United States on November 9, 2021
Here’s the thing about books like this...Folks this is Hollywood...Is Will going to keep it 💯 in this “memoir”? Is he going to level with the readers about how he landed his role in the “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” (ie, “interactions” with co-producers “Q.J” and “B.M”)? Of course not! Moral of my statement- Do not compromise yourself for fame and fortune....

I’m genuinely surprised this book had so much swearing. I only got through a few pages, but even skipping ahead I could find some. I guess I do not know Will Smith that well, which is kind of why I wanted to read more about him, but I guess I never Will.

My experience
1.0 out of 5 stars I wish i could return it…
Reviewed in the United States on March 29, 2022

After he broke everyone’s heart by his disgusting behavior at the Academy Awards, I am requesting to return this book. I can no longer believe his lies about love and being an understanding person who has had “revelation”. Love had nothing to do with his actions. That is not how you show love and understanding, that was rage. He actions show he is unstable and violent. As a women, your wife seems fully capable of taking care of herself, plus she wasn't in danger. You were the dangerous one. If you have had revelation, it was with the wrong angels. He lost so many fans, lost so much respect, myself included. So sad.

Based on his lack of control I don't even want the book and I'm not going to read it. I guess at this point I like Chris Rock more.

1.0 out of 5 stars Recent events changed my mind on Will Smith
Reviewed in the United States on April 2, 2022

I used to really like Will Smith, from his clever rap lyrics to his appearance in Fresh Prince of Bel Air to his role in Men in Black. But slapping Chris Rock and then having the audacity to swear and refuse to apologize invalidated everything about this man. He cannot control his emotions and his behavior at the Oscars highlights his narcissism. I spent money on his autobiography, hoping I was going to understand how celebrities become successful and develop over time, but his behavior at the Oscars showed that words do not align with actions and just wants attention and more money. Deleted this book from my Kindle.
