If this is all there is

Chernow adequately underscores Rockefeller's Baptist mantle, his business dealings and history and his extensive philanthropy, all tidily detailed under Rockefeller's central character. My main objection to this often tedious biography is that Chernow is clearly guessing with his "must haves" or "one can imagines" but then he asserts other "facts" so confidently without citation that one wonders if he is guessing there also. Too often when a historian has little to draw from, he must paint the world that existed around his subject, and then guess at his subject's adjustment to that world, which Chernow does extensively. Too often he makes reflections or remarks that have nothing to do with Rockefeller. Add to this all the suppositions and the sterile relation of better-known epochs, and you get this somewhat lackluster life.
