1.0 out of 5 starsBad influence at a formative age, funny at first, then gets old quick
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on May 7, 2022
My granddaughter is in the first grade, reading at third grade level. After reading thru one of the set of books I bought for her, I felt guilty, embarrassed. Like I should have done a better job of checking the product before sending it to an impressionable little one. Even for older kids, I don't know if it's appropriate. The protagonist is rude, on top of passing off bad grammar, language as cute, scrappy, and harmless. Maybe it is, but I was embarrassed that I sent this 'gift' to my granddaughter and told my daughter so..

1.0 out of 5 stars Beware if you have kids that believe in anything magical
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on November 18, 2018
I tried to give this series a chance. My 5 year old enjoyed the first one. I cringed reading it to him, but figured it’s harmless.

Why would the author write that Mickey Mouse is fake in a book targeted towards kindergarten and first grade? I’m glad I was reading to my kindergartner and was able to skip the page about Mickey being a person in a costume. I’ve heard from others the tooth fairy and Santa are also given away in future books. Just horrible! Junie is a brat that talks about how she can beat up kids, etc. No thank you!

1.0 out of 5 stars Not what I want my kids to read
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on December 29, 2021
If you care about what your kids are exposed to you wouldn’t read this book to them. My daughter got this for Christmas and we had to throw it in the garbage. It’s truly awful.

1.0 out of 5 stars Junie B.'s character is counter to all you've tried to raise your kid to be thus far...
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on September 26, 2009
Last night my child and I sat down to read this book at bedtime. She is 6 and has just started the 1st grade. I would say for her age she is a good reader. I sat quietly on her bed listening to the 1st few pages of My Big Fat Mouth and afterwards I was just done hearing from this book. I could not believe what I was hearing coming from my child. I told her she was not allowed to check any more from this author out at the school's library. I don't know what the parents of the positive reviews are thinking. Maybe they have older kids who find the humor in this. I just think it lends to my child acting out, speaking slangly and disrespecting authority. Not to mention she may think "hided" is a word. I'm serious, it is amazing people find it cute. When folks read this book out loud it's sad to hear it spoken, but it's much worse to hear your child struggle to read it, as a beginning reader, and it's the words you don't want them to say or read!!!!I have punished her for this talk. Why is okay to put it in the mouth of a kindergartener??? Unfortunately there a few Junie B.'s out there in classrooms across the states and they are known mostly for getting into trouble and our teachers' worst nightmare. This book is not for 4-8 year olds it is for 8+ year olds and even then I'm not sure if the influence is a positive one.

1.0 out of 5 stars Horrible! Bad grammar, language, and behavior.
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on November 1, 2011
Junie B. Jones is the worst (or should I say "worstest", like she would?) example for children. She's bratty, mouthy, and acts and talks like a future juvenile delinquent. As other reviewers said, she calls other kids fat, stupid, and dumb. She uses poor grammar, and no, all kids do not talk like that! My three-year old uses better grammar than Junie. I got a bad feeling from the first page of the book. She says she doesn't like her middle name, Beatrice. Great, that's very close to my daughter's name, Beatrix.
My other daughter bought this book from a school book fair. I'm very disappointed that they had these abysmal books available for kids. It's going in the recycling.

1.0 out of 5 stars Big Red Flag Up!
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on January 23, 2018
This book is a big red flag as to what is being taught to our children. I stopped reading this to my daughter after three or four pages. The words are not child appropriate and not only that, the book gives bad ideas to kids. I can not say it’s brain washing as I am not a doctor, but as a father of four daughters, this type of talk is not allowed in our home.

Really upset, I just found out that my daughter has been reading this book and it ruined Mickey mouse and spoiled it for her that Mickey is a person in a costume. Really upset she found out from this book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Chasing Drunks and Fake Disneyland
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on May 6, 2008
I don't even know where to begin. These books are so horrible, and not just for the fact that the character of Junie B is a mean, bratty, ignorant, pathetic excuse of a kid. I fully realize that the grammatical errors and misspelled words are put in there on purpose for so-called humorous effect, but when you have 1st and 2nd graders reading this and you have to keep explaining that it is not correct to say "bestest" or "funnest" or "I runned to her house..." well, it gets highly annoying.

Also, this particular book states that if you want to be a police officer when you grow up that you will spend your time arresting drunks. That's a GREAT topic to have to explain to your 2nd grader!

Then there is the part about how Mickey Mouse is just a guy in a costume. Even the character Junie B. get s a sick feeling in her stomach thinking about how Disneyland is fake! Did the pathetic excuse for an author think about how young readers would feel? I would not recommend these books to anyone.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not in my house
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on April 29, 2012
In the first 6 pages of the book you will find the word "dumb" used 3 times and the sentences, "How'd you like me to bash your brains in, you big fat Jim?" and "And don't say that again, or I'll knock you on your can."

My 1st grader brought this book home from the school library - it was the first Junie B. Jones book she's ever chosen. She reads so much that I don't always look through the books she brings home, but I'd heard about these books from other parents so I decided to check it out before she read it. It only took the first several pages for me to decide she won't be reading this book.
