Most Disappointing Work From a Talented Author
Reviewed in the United States on March 20, 2018
Mr. White has gone to seed as an author.
This book is full of jump cuts in story, geography and character development. The plot is silly and the bad guys are complete caricatures. If he wrote this - shame on him and his Publisher. If he did not write it, and it was just kluged together from co- author input - shame on all of them.
I've been a fan of this author for a long time. I couldn't write a book. It's got to be difficult. His early Doc Ford books and magazine articles were thoughtful, insightful and wonderfully engaging reading. But recently, each piece of work reads like a slapped together treatment for a screenplay. "North of Havana", "Ten Thousand Islands", "Shark River", "Mangrove Coast"...all representative of the fine writing that brought Mr. White to the forefront. Over the last few years, he seems to have reverted to the lazy slap-dash scribbling of his nom de gurerre action novels (Randy Striker, Carl Ramm) . Even if Mr. White no longer cares about Tomlinson and Doc Ford, we do. Take a break Mr. White and go fishing. Find your Muse. Write by yourself on an island instead of sitting in your restaurant. Go find Doc Ford again and tell us a serious story... he is not a frivolous character, and you lost him in this book.
