4.0 out of 5 starsGood read - but...

I was looking for a distraction, and this came up on my recommendations. I'm a big Tom Clancy/Jack Ryan (Sr.) fan. However, there were times in this book where it felt like acronyms were being thrown around just because some writing formula required a certain number be used. It was a little difficult to keep track of the plot in a few places, and was surprised to look down at one point to see I was 90%+ done with the book and all the story lines were a long way from finished. The ending felt rushed, and frankly, unsatisfying.

All in all, a good book. As I suspect there will be more 'Tom Clancy' novels, will likely have to pay a bit more attention to the actual writer to determine if worth buying at full price, or wait for a sale/borrow from the library.

2.0 out of 5 starsPredictable, unorganized, and disappointing

Long time reader of the TC series.. I'm so disappointed with the quality (or lack thereof) in this book. The book bounces back and forth between unrelated subplots that, while the book tries to establish a link, have nothing to do with each other. Additionally, there are so many mini-plots that only last a few chapters and are built up for a climax that never happens. You just read to the end of the chapter and think "oh, that's it?" Meanwhile, the main character's who've grown and develop over the years have reverted back to their prior lives. Clark breaking all the rules because he's angry about how a girl was treated. Jr falling for a girl involved in the other subplot. I've grown to love these characters and Cameron didn't due the series justice. These books are certainly going downhill since Greaney left...

I've read all of Cameron's previous works and we've been known to frequent the same motorcycle forums over the years. Well done bud, thanks for working Funkytown into a Clancy novel. Never thought I'd see the day. It does hit a little close to home for me though, as I live and grew up "Just north of Alvarado".
Kudos again, who'd have thunk that the ADV crew of skallywags would range from a bunch of castoffs to an astronaut and a guy continuing the Jack Ryan legacy.

Loved reading this book written by Marc Cameron. Fast paced story dealing with three different situations related to an assignation plot to take out the Chinese president along with President Jack Ryan. The whole gang is back together which is why I think this is the best book so far since the last time they worked together.

This was an excellent book in the genre of Tom Clancy. It was good to see that John Clark still had a prominent role. I would suggest that readers binge read this book rather than in starts and stops. It is a bit hard to keep all the players straight if you don't.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best post-Clancy Jack Ryan novels around.

I like Mark Cameron's work in his own novels and he carries on the Tom Clancy/Jack Ryan narrative well here. It was time to have both Jack Senior and Junior share the narrative to an almost equal extent. Cameron pulls it off admirably in a novel that is both far-reaching and very interesting to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Marc Cameron is the heir apparent for Tom Clancy

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed Mark Greaney and still read his books but they always lacked the far reaching intrigue and setting up a political web that begged for each plot strand to be plucked and followed back to center. Although this book was promised as a follow on for the last Jack Ryan Jr/Campus novel, that wasn't the case. This book veered off in different directions all at once. Mexican human trafficking, PRC politics, an idiot blogger, and various subplots going on at once. The nice thing Marc does is never lets them venture too far. All things are brought back to center and the ending wasn't rushed like it had been in the last books. Plenty of intrigue, lots of action too. John Clark going native was a nice flashback to his days in Without Remorse. It is very apparent that not only did Marc Cameron read all the previous books, he also loved them and the characters. The series is in very capable hands.

Clancy's characters remain alive and relatively well under the deft hand of Marc Cameron. Though I was skeptical at first, I have found Clancy's work being treated with the utmost respect. Reading this series is like binge watching Netflix.

I love Cameron’s Jericho Quinn novels and was delighted with his handling of Jack Ryan, Jr. the novel’s twin story lines of international intrigue with China and the tragedy of human trafficking in the US are handled with a deft touch. I highly recommend this book.
