Favorite story: "Harmless as Serpents" by Rosemary Edghill & Rebecca Fox

Perhaps because they are such alien creatures, stories where a point of view character is a Companion always intrigue me. Throw in tantalizing details about the mysterious land of Iftel, the realistic aftereffects of Karse's religious upheaval, and multiple laugh-out-loud moments, and this was easily the most memorable book in this anthology for me. The story stands along nicely, but I'd love a follow-up just to meet the Herald who matches Kenisant's personality.

Story that I want expanded into a novel: "The Ones She Couldn't Save" by Louisa Swann

This tale worked very well as a standalone story, but it would also be amazing as the inciting incident of the main character's life. Without giving away too much of the ending, I desperately want to see where Riann goes from here. Does she make it to Valdemar? Is she Chosen to be a Herald, or does her life take a different path? What becomes of the person in her care, and how does that snag effect things? So much potential that I desperately want answers to.

3.0 out of 5 starsAs much as I love the Valdemar stories

As much as I love the Valdemar stories, I didn't love this book. Too many of the stories just didn't seem to have a point, or perhaps they lacked resolution. It was almost like reading about a day or two in someone's life, without understanding why those days were significant. In a couple of cases, characters were introduced and/or situations set up that would have been very interesting, but the story just seemed to stop. Granted, these were short stories -- but in these cases I think perhaps the short format wasn't the best for the purpose.

4.0 out of 5 stars New great Stories happening in Valdemar!

This book is an anthology of short stories by different authors -- ALL based on the mythical realm of Valdemar -- which to some of us who have come to know and love the many characters and stories, is not so mythical after all. An ancient Chinese proverb says,"In dreams and in life, NOTHING is impossible. Clearly the individual authors of the various stories are well versed in Mercedes Lackey "Valdemar Lore." Their stories vary from interesting to Gripping. The last, I think is best -- most likely because Mercedes Lackey wrote it herself (with her husband's contribution). The Valdemar stories seem to go on and on -- which makes me happier because I never tire of the Herald's and the Companions escapades. I remember after I read the first trilogy of the Valdemar adventures, I hid those three books away, and would not let anybody else touch them -- let alone 'BORROW' them. I did not want the excitement to ever end -- AND it has not!!!!!

2.0 out of 5 stars Short stories of very uneven quality

I should have looked more closely before I purchased this book, it is *edited* by Mercedes Lackey, not *written* by. There is one short story at the end written by her, the rest are by other authors, and the quality varies wildly. I enjoyed about nine of the twenty-two short stories, as they had a coherent plot and good characterization and dialogue. A lot of the rest were strangely, too short for a short story. They would just end, not really resolving the conflict of the plot in any concrete way (if there was a conflict in the story to begin with!) I'm probably going to sell this book to a used bookstore, I don't see ever wanting to read it again.

This is another title in a series of anthologies inspired by the much beloved classic Valdemar-series.
It's been a while since I read or reread any of these and this anthology was new to me. Still, enjoyable as always. It's like a gust of something old and familiar with something new. I especially enjoyed the last story -naturally. It feels like coming home to read these. Everyone who participates in these - thank you!

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing

In recent years, I have found myself disappointed in the sloppy writing style Ms. Lackey has fallen to. I had hoped for better from an anthology with other writers but apparently, her editing has become equally slipshod. I have read the first two stories and found both to end abruptly with no clear resolution to the central conflict. Adding to my frustration, a large portion of the second, the matter regarding cows and fences, seemed lifted directly from Arriws Flight. I dont know that I will read the rest. I have been a loyal fan for nearly 30 years but this might be the last straw.

4.0 out of 5 stars 22 Tales Across The World of Valdemar
Reviewed in the United States on December 12, 2016

These tales set in the world Lackey invented relate how people of various species react to the magic of Valdemar's world. We meet humans from low-born to nobles, both gifted and not, gryphons, hertasi, kyree, and others, coming from Valdemar, the Pelegiris, Karse, and lands beyond. A wonderful review of the breadth of Lackey's world-building with characters amazingly well developed within the constraints of the short story form. My only regrets over this book is that I wanted so many of the tales to continue, so we could see what happened next ...

1.0 out of 5 stars These are not true short stories, they're brief, disjointed vignettes.
Reviewed in the United States on April 23, 2018

This book really disappointed me. It's supposed to be short stories about Valdemar, but in the entire book there was only one actual story with a beginning, middle, and end. The rest were vignettes, and most of them didn't bother to explain the situation before going on into the action. I had no idea what was going on most of the time, and when the "story" ended it didn't finish telling the tale. Wish I hadn't spent my time or money on this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good stories but some felt uncompleted
Reviewed in the United States on December 17, 2016

Enjoyed the book but my only complaint is that maybe half of the stories by the other authors of the tales ended the stories abruptly or they kind of felt uncompleted in a way. I felt like there was supposed to be more to some of the stories but I wasn't sure if the authors ran out of ideas or that is just how they wanted it to end. I'm going with "Hopeful" for the mood because I really can't quite put my finger on it for a mood.

If you read Lackey Valemar Series You would like the short stories. What nice is the stories do not always revolve about Heralds. You would seeing stories about other like Healers, Bards, nongifted people ans Sun Priest. This book has a addition the continuation of a previous story. Great boon
