Representation for Little Girls!!
Reviewed in the United States on June 7, 2018
Beautiful is an adorably illustrated book that challenges gender expectation for girls. Written by Stacy McAnulty and illustrated by Joanne Lew-Vriethoff it shows girls of an array of skin color, body types and abilities doing fun activities that society often portray as boy activities, such as sports, playing pirates and playing in the dirt. I specifically loved the representation of girls in wheelchairs both playing basketball and dancing. It was recommended by Amy Pence-Brown, our local Body Positive activist, who teaches and writes about body image, among other things! I highly recommend this gorgeous book to girl moms and boy moms alike. This book seems geared towards preschool and Kindergarten, with very little words, but could be used as a discussion starter for any age.
