4.0 out of 5 starsExcellent Read
Reviewed in the United States on January 9, 2018
I keep going back and forth between four and five stars. I think the only reason I've not settled for five is for purely shallow reasons, but I feel the four, so I'm going with it.

This is book one in the River of Time series. First, my few issues with the book. One, why is it titled Waterfall? I never made the connection. None. Whatsoever. Gorgeous title. Gorgeous cover. The first two things that drew me in until I read the intriguing synopsis, but I still, even after having finished it, cannot make the connection. Perhaps it'll click later on in the series? Two, I did find a few minor grammatical errors, which could have been caught by the editors. There were a few incorrect commas and then three or four dialogue issues that were "holes" for lack of a better word. But, nothing so serious as to jerk me from the reality that the story cocooned me in. Three, I know the MC was as twenty-first century seventeen year old American girl, but Lord have mercy the number of times I saw the phrase "hot" associated with men. Kay, I'm in my early twenties and my younger sister is midteens, and neither of us speak that way. I know there are masses of girls out there that do, so it wasn't unrealistic, just too much. Yeah, I'm an old soul. And, yeah, I've thought guys were great looking, but I have not gone on and on about how "hot" they were. This, however, did seem to ease up as the book went along. First impressions, I get it, so this is a light critique. That said...I have no other complaints.

The MC, Gabriella, was stinking awesome. :D I loved her! I loved her sister and I really hope we get to see more of her in the future. I loved the way she narrated the story and her personality. I could relate to her. I liked her daring nature, which came mostly from her twenty-first century upbringing and ignorance of the current period. I liked how her skills translated to the fourteenth century and I liked how she adapted to the world around her. She wasn't all head strong, know it all, I can do this! She had moments of doubt and fear. She had questions and something that gave her caution. She was also pretty stubborn, but not in a cliche way. I very much enjoyed the rich historical world that Mrs. Bergren built. I'm finding more and more that I like historical fiction and nonfiction, which I never would have imagined as a child. The world was intricate and it enveloped me wholly. The relationships between the characters were dynamic, round, and complex. I loved the moments when Gabi thought back to her father and when Rossi shone through to be more than she first appeared. I loved, and I do mean loved Luca and Marcello! I cannot wait to see more of those two! Oh, and Fortino. God love Fortino. I am definitely coming back for more of him. So, as you can see, I am entirely enamored of the cast and the setting. The plot was intriguing. It drew me in, and though at times some of the names took a second to process, I soon got the hang of it and felt right at home in the little Italian world. The language was beautiful and I almost wish there had been more of it. I was very much invested in the story by the end of it and would heartily recommend it to others who enjoy a story alive with intrigue and just a hint of forbidden romance!

As for my three strikes: no language, clean romance, and mild violence. It's a plus on all sides!

When I initially finished reading Waterfall by Lisa Tawn Bergren, a book that I had my eye on for sometime, I had mixed feelings about it, and hopefully this review can help you understand why.

THE PLOT-

Two sisters are spending their summer vacation in Italy with their archeologist mom and it sucks. I mean, who in their right mind would want to get up at 5:00 am and go and search for old Italian ruins?! Not Gabi, that's for sure. Bored and disappointed with her summer, Gabi and her sister Lia decide to go and look at their mom's most recent discovery, an old tomb from like the 1300's or something. Inside the tomb they discover these two handprints painted on the wall and, even though Gabi knows it could compromise the whole site, she decides to put her hand against one of the handprints.
*gasp* OMG. It's warm. Well, that's weird. Rocks are supposed to be cool, right? But it's a perfect match with her hand. Gabi is struck with an idea and tell's Lia to put her hand on the other print and that too is a match! But before they can think too hard about it, the world starts to spin and before she knows what's happening, Gabi finds herself thrown back in time. Lia is missing and when Gabi leaves the tomb to find out where she is, she discovers that she's smack dab in the middle of a battle, where her eye catches this "serious hottie". Serious Hottie rescues her from an attacker and she is taken back to his home where Gabi trys to make sense of what is happening. She tells Serious Hottie that she was traveling with her sister to find their mother when they got seperated and lost in the woods.
As Gabi trys to find out information about where her sister could be, she struggles to fit in at Serious Hottie's home. I mean, let's be honest. Showing up in the middle of a battle wearing skinny jeans and a cami isn't a sight that men from 14th century Italy are used to. Or women who wear their hair down wield swords, and let's not forget to mention women who ride astride a horse and not sidesaddle. But it makes Gabi all the more intriguing, and she is swept away in a story of politics, romance, and war.

THE CHARACTERS-

Gabi is the main character of Waterfall and the story is told from her POV. I didn't like her, honestly. 14th century Italian? Not a problem, she's fluent. Have a sick brother and don't know what's wrong with him? Gabi's got you covered! What about Latin..Can you speak that? Oh come on, we're talking about Gabi! She's a frigging superwoman.
*gag*
She was just way too perfect, I felt. Any problems that arose could be solved by simply involving Gabi. I like to feel that I connect to the MC of a novel and I honestly didn't get that connection with Gabi.
Lia I liked much better than Gabi, even though we didn't get much of an oppurtunity to fully discover her character. From the little interaction we did see with Lia, though, I really enoyed. She seemed to be handling the whole time travel thing a lot more realistically than Gabi and she didn't have an answer for everything like Gabi either. I found her character much more likable and relatable and I honestly wished that she was the MC and not Gabi.
Marcello aka Serious Hottie is Gabi's 'one true love' and, oh did we mention he's hot? Because that seems to be what Gabi always notices about him, and in turn, I feel like that's what readers only see about him as well: just his looks. He's in line to become a lord or something because of his elder brother's ailing health, and let's not forget he's engaged to another woman, and yet, he falls in love with Gabi.
Luca is Marcello's right hand guy and he honestly saved this book for me. He's charming and insolent and adorable and everything I would like in a male protagonist.

THE LOVE STORY-

...You know the love story is going to be cheesy when the first thing Gabi thinks when she see's Marcellow is how much of a hottie he is. And the love story was a bit cheesy and at times, I felt, immature. I realize that this is a young adult novel and not only that, it's fiction, so cheesiness is (unfortunately) expected. But sometimes I couldn't take their relationship seriously, and it moved quickly.
However, I think there's a beginning of a romance with Luca and Lia blossoming, and that is something that I would love to see develop, should it happen. And speaking of Lia, I would just like to remind you of how awesome she is, because she doesn't become distracted by all the handsome hunks that seem to surround her and Gabi. No, she instead keeps her eyes ahead of her, focusing on the goal of getting back home to their own time. How refreshing it is to read about a character who for once isn't concerned about falling in love and can keep her head on straight!

I was slightly disappointed with this book, but only because of Gabi. This book might become something of a guilty pleasure for me, because honestly, it's cheesy. It's lame, at times. But it kind of just sucks you in. I will continue this series, but only for Lia and Luca. They are what saved this book for me.

3.0 out of 5 stars Teen book

I guess I didn't look carefully enough at this before purchase because it's a young teen book. I wasn't really interested in a book like this. Perhaps Amazon could make some clear designation marking on books for kids as opposed to adults. All that said, the writing was only just acceptable. Lots of 'oh, he's such a hottie' kind of language that is just poor writing. The story line was interesting...I like time travel books, but even for a teen, the language should be a little more upscale.

3.0 out of 5 stars Can't stand the way her heroines talked (teen jargon)

The story itself was well done. I have a high level of suspension of disbelief so I can go along with little quirks in the story like their ability to speak an old dialect of Italian when they go back in time. But what I COULDN'T stand is the absolutely idiotic teen slang/jargon that she had her heroines using throughout the entire story. It literally made me feel like I was was dumbing myself down to keep reading their drivel. Hence the 3 stars.

I bought all four books for Christmas! I was so excited to read them and assumed that they would be good because the reviews were really good. I finished the series but was so disappointed!!! They are written more for teenagers and the book description did not really say that. Also, I got tired of the headstrong girls always going to the aid of the men and then needing to be rescued. Don't get me wrong I am not looking for a submissive women only, but it got kind of old. I felt like it could have been written in 2 books many 3.

Mostly fluff, and not based on historical facts.....it is light reading; if that is what you like then this would be a good book for you. It is also pretty much smut free, with only a few references to sex.... Since it was free and I do enjoy light reading, I would recommend it, for anyone else who looking for a pleasant read....

3.0 out of 5 stars just okay.

I read this book on the recommendation of my daughter-in-law. It was okay, but it just didn't hit me as being as great as she thought it was. I realized as I was reading it that it probably young adult fiction. Whereas I enjoyed the Twilight series and the Harry Potter books, I just didn't think this one was all that great. I won't buy anymore in this series.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great young adult fiction - 12 to 16 year girls especially

Young adult fiction is overdrawn characters and forced plots and the sense that you dumbed it down a little and Im fine with that if the audience is drawn in more. I would get this for an adolescent girl (10 years old if a good reader although the romance might not interest them the plot will) - (16 if a slower reader). I purchased it because some of my students at school were reading it and although I couldn't finish it and lost interest I can see that it is perfectly geared towards this audience. The author knows what she is doing.

I suspect that this book would appeal more to a teen or a twenty-something. The basic story line is interesting and has been used well by other authors as well but the main characters were teens and this took away something from the story line. It's not a bad read but it isn't a good one either.

3 Stars - Gabi made some pretty stupid mistakes in the novel that was aggravating but at least Marcello didn't want to fight his attraction for long and wanted to immediately break off the betrothal. Contains very innocent kissing.

This book was ok if you are looking for a light read. I found some parts of this book to be quite cheesy and I was annoyed when the main character kept referring to these men from ancient times as "totally hot". However, the story did move along at a good pace and kept my attention.
