Fascinating

I was amazed that I had not known of this book much earlier. I believe it puts Mr. VanderMeer very high in my regard. At least for
this amazing trilogy. And I absolutely agree with an earlier reviewer in that it made me (in some way) of Italo Calvino.
Oddly enough it was If On A Winter's Night A Traveler that occurred to me just before I thougt of Invisible Cities.
This will not be for everyone. You must be a reader. This is not summer at the beach. For me it is a work of genius to which I will return at least a few times. I read it, then something that took only two or three days to finish. I came back to this book directly afterwards. It is one of the book that I had to have in hardcover. Dive in! Enjoy!

Warning: City of Saints and Madmen is abridged

This is not the complete set of stories as advertised. City of Saints and Madmen is missing about half of the Bantam edition's content (everything in the so-called Appendix, which is actually another set of stories).

It's a good way to get Shriek and Finch, so I'll give it 2 stars for that. But failing to mention that hundreds of pages were cut to make this omnibus happen is dishonest.

Life changing books

These novels are, without a doubt, some of the most important books I've read in my life. In 2011, I picked up City of Saints and Madmen and read it over the course of a few days while I was substitute teaching. I felt at the time I was finding fewer and fewer books that changed how I read, so when CoSaM just got under my skin, it caught me completely unaware. It made me reflect on the relationship between history and horror, how constructed and fragile our own world is, and what is always just beneath the surface but unseeable due to perspective and ideolology. I love all of Vandermeer's works, but I hold a special place for these 3 books, for they have forced me to see my everyday world differently, and I'll never be able to go back.

Outstanding fantasy

I read these books as they were first published, and they are still my favorites of Jeff Vandermeres work. It’s a real pleasure to see them published in a new edition, I urge you to read them if you enjoy literate imaginative fantasy.

Probably one of my favorite books. I just love Jeff VanderMeer's books. I bought Area X (the trilogy of the southern reach) as well and they're both in my top 5. This book does some rather unique things I've never seen before with writing and I loved every second of it. The world felt very connected and so did the characters. I would read and then something would happen and I'd just go OH! lightbulb! On top of that, the book does a very good job of giving you questions and hinting at answers. If you like the lovecraftian idea of lurking horror and mysteries this is for you. By far, Shriek is the best part of the book though.
