THE UNHOLY by Heather Graham (Krewe of Hunters Book #6)
Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2020
So far I've read the first six books in Graham's "Krewe of Hunters" series and I have to say they are all over the place. A couple (like this one) I liked, a couple of others I didn't, and another way just okay. Unlike most books I've started lately though, THE UNHOLY was interesting enough to hold my attention and I finished it in less than two days. And while it is part of a series, it can easily be read as a standalone too. This new "Krewe" has only been together since the fifth installment though, so it was nice getting to know them all a little better as well as seeing them work together as a team.
As for Sean and Madison, I really liked them both and thought they had great chemistry. Because of their common "talents' it was easy to understand why they connected so well and so quickly. Their romance basically remained on the back burner though and the main focus was always on the murder mystery. I have to admit the villain kept me guessing, although he/she was always on my list of suspects. On the other hand there's another individual whose culpability was super easy to predict. Still, there was a large cast of characters, most of whom were endearing and a great addition to the tale.
In my opinion HG usually has a better backstory than was found here though. When past and present converge for the finale, I was a bit letdown with the killer's motive which was somewhat weak. I also would have liked learning more about film noir, though the behind-the-scenes look at a special effects studio was pretty cool too. One of the best aspects of this story however was Madison's resident ghost, who just happens to be an icon of the silver screen. In the end it was definitely an intriguing read with just enough twists and turns to keep me flipping the pages, and now I'm ready for the next =)
