2.0 out of 5 starsLousy Book
Reviewed in the United States on July 21, 2018
I was really disappointed with this book. I liked the first in the series, but this one really fell flat. It took way too long for the story to begin. I was over 25% in before the murder mystery finally started. The plot was very simplistic. Ashley and her grandpa run a B&B on their well preserved plantation. The murder happens just after the annual reenactment of a civil war skirmish that occurred on the property. One of the reenactors is missing and turns up dead the next day. Jake, our hero, is part of a quasi governmental group that investigates events with a paranormal side. Despite this, when Ashley realizes her dead relative is talking to her, she never asks the paranormal team about it. She just worries about it.

Jake is the man Ashley pushed away. He tried to give her a message from her newly dead father and she freaked out and broke up with him, although she never stopped loving him. Jake is steadfast and boring. There's really nothing special about him. Jake is your standard interchangeable tall, dark, and handsome hero. Ashley is pretty dumb. She has sex with Jake without a condom or even a talk about basic safety. There's two incredible TSTL moments at the end.

There was a lot of dumb, but the TSTL stuff was so annoying I had to give this book two stars.

I gave it 2 stars because I really did not like the heroine. I do like the continued interaction between the complete team established in the first book. The heart of evil character is a surprise as there isn't all that much interaction with him.

This copy is in ok shape as well. I expect some wear on the book because it's used. I just have a big problem reading the site it come from and matching up several books at once . When I see free shipping over $35.00 I go book happy and get several books thinking ,yeah, free shipping. Maybe I am wrong about this issue I am having right now. There's got to be an easier way to read and know exactly how much money will come out of my pocket long before I check out and pay. I don't think any one likes to see extra cost added to their order they didn't expect, especially when free shipping was expected and not received. I know when you order from Amazon and you really wanted the order you still pay for it.

I read Heather Graham books always. This is probably the only one I did not like. I forced myself to finish it. If you like books about the the wars and old plantations you will like this one.

2.0 out of 5 stars I am so disappointed in this book.
Reviewed in the United States on March 6, 2022
I have been assured that the Krewe Of Hunters series is a good series and that it has gotten better over time. This is why I am willing to struggle through this first novel understanding that the first of anything often isn't the best. It is painful though. The writing is sophomoric at best. The characters are flat and predictable. I have absolutely no interest in any of them at this point. The writing is like reading an elementary school primer with characters that are stiff and strictly following directions. At no point are these characters allowed to think for themselves.
And to make things worse I listened to it on Audible. The narrator is just as bland and boring as the book.
That said, I enjoy most of Heather Graham's books, so I'm willing to get through this one just so I know the storyline.
I sincerely hope it gets better.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing return to the Krewe
Reviewed in the United States on February 18, 2020
All the small things in the first book I loved got so exaggerated in this one that it became just too much and overwhelmed the story. Too much romance. Too much of the ghosts. Too much of the Scooby-Doo cheesy feel. It was like the author decided she didn’t have enough tropes/stereotypes in the first that she had to throw them all in this one.

The author lost the entire team dynamic she had created in the first one. This was Jake and Ashleigh’s story and the rest of the team played third fiddle. They weren’t even second fiddle. There wasn’t the great chemistry between the team members that we enjoyed in the first book.

The heroine is just pathetic. She is tough and lashes out when she shouldn’t and then spends the rest of the book making stupid decisions to put herself and others in danger. I spent a lot of time calling her an idiot throughout the book. She wasn’t that likable and I didn’t feel any chemistry with Jake. She sadly enough has more chemistry with Cliff “her semi-cousin” than she did with Jake.

I guess my biggest disappointment in this book though is the complete change in Jake’s personality. It’s like he switched bodies with Jackson. I loved his smooth, laid back calm in the first book and in this one none of that was present. I hope the author can find her rhythm again in the next one.

There was a change in narrators from the first book as well which I found disappointing as I couldn’t quite recognize the characters I loved in the first book. Apparently this will the narrator for the books in the series now and I’m not sure how I feel about that.

TOP 500 REVIEWERVINE VOICE
2.0 out of 5 stars Lackluster romance, few thrills, TSTL protagonist
Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2019
I’m reading this series out of order, so I just bounced from Book #29 to this one. I’ve seen iterations of this civil war re-enactment sort of murder on CSI or Criminal Minds or a similar show.

I bought and listened to the Audiobook version, which I usually like much better than Kindle, but this time the story seemed to drag, especially because it seems front-loaded with history.

The storyline is very Krewe-like, so it’s predictable, but the protagonists/lovers just didn’t have any chemistry. Many secondary characters weren’t fleshed out, but I’d started a list of names, so yay for me. What threw me was when the author started confusing Angela and Ashley.

I stuck it out to the end, going at 2.0 speed or greater.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not her best- get it at the library.

I don't really expect much from romance books. This isn't because I don't think that there can be some fantastic books in the genre (there's some amazing stuff out there), but because the main goal of romance & most fiction isn't to be some amazingly deep read. Their goal is to entertain & only to entertain, which I respect. Unfortunately you sometimes get things that fall short of even that modest goal, which is what happened here with this book.

Normally I'd have a huge paragraph of great things to say about an Adam Harrison related book, but this just isn't the case with this book. While I do like the characters & at times there's some good chemistry, there just wasn't a lot that really stood out here until the ending. I did like the pacing towards the end & it does have a nice little scene at the end as well as some great recipes.

It's just that most of the book felt forced & predictable. Some of the background characters just blurred into one big lump because there wasn't anything to really make them stand out or be exemplary from the rest of the cast. It was also fairly easy to predict the killer because there were only a few people who were described well enough to be the killer & one of those I was able to eliminate because *minor spoiler* one of the team members showed an interest in him *end spoiler*. Even the love scenes didn't really do much to rescue the book because more often than not the chemistry just wasn't present enough to really loop me in like previous books have.

As far as entertainment value goes, I can't muster more than 2 stars for this book. The Heather Graham fangirl in me keeps nagging me to raise the star rating to at least 3 stars, but it's that same fangirl who says "well... I've read a lot better, especially in the AH line of books".

Read this at the library. I wouldn't bother purchasing it unless you absolutely have the urge to keep your collection current.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not up to par, but an easy read
Reviewed in the United States on July 9, 2011
I generally love Heather Graham's books and would buy anything with her name on it. But Heart of Evil is lacking compared to her other books. Lots of atmosphere, possible bad guys, and mystery but the characters are flat. I felt as though this book started in the middle of the story, you don't know why the main 2 characters are drawn to each other and you don't feel any progression in their relationship.

Others have commented that this is book 2 in the series and you need book 1 to understand all the in's and out's -- for me that's a publising problem. Phantom Evil (book 1) is only out in Hardback and Heart of Evil (book 2)is already out in Mass Market paperback. They should've stuck with one format and kept the books in order either hardback/paperback that way. Mixing the mediums doesn't work for people like me who only buy paperbacks. Wait til all are in one format and then read them in order.

Otherwise, stick with the Ghost Shadow/Night/Moon or Deadly Night/Vision/Gift series or any of the better rated singles like The Vision, Haunted, or Ghost Walk.
