5.0 out of 5 starsOne of my very favorite parts of this book is the quote
Reviewed in the United States on May 14, 2018
If you’ve been present in the twenty-first century you know days have vanished for when coaches were respected as much for their off-court performances as for their success on the court. However, in, A Lifetime of Observations and Reflections on and off the Court brings to light the timeless wisdom of the extraordinary UCLA basketball coach, John Wooden. In honest and telling passages, Coach brings to light his Reflections and Observations about virtually every aspect of his life. Wooden shares his personal philosophy on family, achievement, success, and excellence. Raised on a small farm in Halls, Indiana, he offers the lessons and wisdom he’s learned over the course of his journey through life, being a coach for UCLA, and what he’s as a husband, and being the father of two kids. These lessons, along with personal letters from Denny Crum, and Kareem Abdul-Jabber, have made Wooden: A Lifetime of Observations and Reflections on and off the Court, a book for the ages. One of my very favorite parts of this book is the quote, “Always try to be the very best you can be. Learn from others, yes. But don’t try to be better than they are”(Wooden 92). My gymnastics coach uses this idea from the quote a lot during practice. He tells us not to compare ourselves to others but to focus on our success. When you waste all your energy trying to become someone else, you won’t become what you could be. This is what Wooden expressed in the quote, and it struck out to me because of how raw and true it was. If your into books that help create a new sense of confidence or books that can help get you out of something tough, this book is for you! Wooden’s book, A Lifetime of Observations and Reflections on and off the Court, plays more into mental survival rather than physical. He expresses the lessons he’s learned while coaching, and raising a family. He takes what anybody could be struggling with and shares how he handled it and what he learned from it from his personal experience. It has helped others to get through there rough patches. Wooden’s book is full of different lessons he has learned, but in a style where each excerpt is only 3-4 pages long. So if you’re like me, and don’t like to read long passages, this book is for you! Wooden was a very influential person, and that was shown very clearly in this book! So if you are struggling with anything, he may just be your solution.

All the stuff in here is just basic common sense stuff. While Wooden may have been a great coach, I think his friend the author has got him to do several of these books that say the same thing over and over again: Work hard, be honest, be disciplined etc etc. There is nothing here that you don't already know.

5.0 out of 5 stars First and Foremost, a Teacher
Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2016

Recently I was reminded of the birthday (October 14th) of one of my personal/professional influencers John Wooden. It caused me to pause and reflect on him, his life, and the legacy he left behind through his teachings. For those of you asking, “who is John Wooden”, here is a brief bio.

John Robert Wooden (October 14, 1910 – June 4, 2010) also known as the "Wizard of Westwood," was the men’s basketball coach during UCLA’s dynasty years. Over his career he won ten NCAA national championships in a 12-year period, including a record seven in a row, and his team won a record 88 consecutive games. In 1960 he was the first to be enshrined as both a player and a coach in the Basketball Hall of Fame. ESPN named Coach Wooden the Coach of the Century.

But at his core, Coach Wooden was a teacher. The life lessons he taught and his quotes, known as "Woodenisms", have become legend. Fortunately, he shared his philosophy, credo, witticisms, and his pyramid for success with us all and with generations to come through lectures and books.

I was introduced to Coach Wooden’s teachings years ago and then reintroduced to them again when a manager of mine gave me a copy of the book, “Wooden, A Lifetime of Observations and Reflections On and Off the Court”. I devoured it and once again I was hooked. In it, he lays out his philosophy on life, leadership, success, and personal fulfillment. He teaches through short simple inspirational messages that strike you as both common sense and deeply profound at the same time.

So I pulled out my copy of “Observations and Reflections” full of post-it’s marking key pages and re-read it. My objective being to honor him, but as usual I ended up once again learning from him.

Coach Wooden credits his father (as I do mine) with giving him the foundation for his life. In “Observations and Reflections” he refers to the two sets of threes – direct and simple rules from his father about how you should live your life that his father gave to him on a card.

Set 1:
• Never lie.
• Never cheat.
• Never steal.

Set 2:
• Don’t whine.
• Don’t complain.
• Don’t make excuses.

On the back of the card was his father’s creed, titled “Seven Things to Do”. I’ll let you do some research or read the book to learn them.

I am always struck by how similar his basic life lessons are to those I learned from my own father.

My father a man of few words (or who as my oldest son referred to in the eulogy he gave at his funeral - “a man of few words who somehow could give a one-sentence answer to any question about life no matter how complex”) had his own “rules” or as my children came to know them as “Poppa-isms”. He had many of them, some serious and some funny – but in each one there was a lesson.

Like Coach Wooden my father seemed to have an innate understanding of life that he could express in the simplest of terms. My Father passed away this past year, so I guess when I was reminded of Coach Wooden’s birthday I somehow subconsciously connected the two men in my mind.

Over the years I have gifted Coach Wooden’s “Observations and Reflections” book to friends, to young people graduating from High School and College, and to managers that I have coached (using it as a developmental tool) in my career - - and yes, it was required reading for all three of my children.

Take a moment to acquaint yourself with Coach Wooden and allow the teacher to teach. You might be surprised how familiar some of it sounds. In today’s complex world where at times overthinking things tends to happen, sometimes simplicity is the best medicine. Happy Belated Birthday Coach, and thanks Dad.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Book to Live By

This is a book that everyone should read - John Wooden was not just an icon in men's college basketball having been the incomparable coach of many UCLA Men's Basketball teams, but also a philosopher of life. He taught his players about life off the court, which would translate to how they play the game on the court, where his wisdom of life transformed countless of his team players into men of character. Fortunately for the rest of us, we can indulge ourselves into John Wooden's philosophy of life with the stories and sayings he presented in his book, which are short and meaningful - a reader can pick any place in the book to read - you don't have to start from the beginning. Some of my favorite John Wooden sayings:

-Failing to prepare is preparing to fail...

-Sports do not build character, they reveal it...

-Be more concerned about your character than your reputation; your reputation is what people think you are - your character is who you really are...

I was the Coach of the US Maccabiah Masters Tennis Team for the Pan American Maccabiah Games that were held in Mexico City in July 2019, where I gave John Wooden's book to all of my tennis players to read. This book should be required reading for all athletes, all children who aspire to be athletes, parents, and students of philosophy courses - it has great meaning to anyone, both athletes and non-athletes. Sadly, we have lost this iconic role model to advance age, but his words of how he viewed and lived life live on in this book. A must read...

I am a fan of learning things I can apply to my own life. This book is a perfect example of giving me that.

I've learned many of the inner character traits that John Wooden had that made him such a successful coach. He not only portrayed himself a certain way, he was a certain way. There are examples and direct teachings by Wooden himself on how he ran his life and what made him so successful.

My outlook on life changed after reading his words. I learned how anger never accomplishes anything and how to hold individuals to a high standard to get their best performance. But most of all, it was reinforced that working hard leads to success. John Wooden worked hard, he worked harder than everyone because he believed in it. He didn't waste time, he always prepared. It's easy to be inspired to play when you know your coach (or leader in any situation) is working as hard or harder than you are.

Wooden placed family first, he values love and opens views on how even a "perfect marriage" has difficulties and needs to be worked at. I trusted and believe everything Wooden said and plan to re-read and try to implement his lifestyle habits into my own life.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent book

I was sorry to hear of Coach Wooden's passing recently but know that he had lived a very full and satisfying life and now I am sure he is part of the Kingdom of Heaven. If you asked me to name the individual that I admired most and had the most integrity of anyone on this earth, I would say it was Coach Wooden. He's a man who possessed a great deal of wisdom and always tried to practice what he preached. Much of that wisdom has been distilled and summarized in this book. There's no filler; every single page is a worthwhile read and contains something that can be positively applied in a person's life.

In these days where the norm for politicians is to be crooked and involved in scandals, and society is rampant with glorifying greed and selfishness, Coach Wooden is where our moral compass should be pointed. This is an excellent book both for keeping to read and reread, and to give as gifts. He was truly a great man and we are fortunate that his wisdom has been documented to share with others.

Coach Wooden is a coaches coach. Amazing coach that never focused on winning or beating a team but rather focused on his team being the best team they could be. Loved the quote "You can lose when you outscore somebody in a game. And you can win when you're outscored." Meaning that if you focus on you being at your best you never lose which is a principle that can be applied to everything done in life. What an amazing story and man.

If we all heeded the wise words of John Wooden and TRIED to live our lives by his philosophies, this world would be an amazing place.

This book was recommended to me by the regional president at my office while we were learning about leadership. Little did I know, this book has changed my outlook on being a supervisor AND in the future, raising a family.

His words of wisdom resonates with anyone who has had hardship and who wants to find success. The answer is simple, hard work and preparation. Wooden emphasizes the process of the "doing" instead of the "winning" and that absolute effort in itself is a victory.

This is an easy read and keep a stack of Post-Its handy, you will want to remember many of these quotes and ideas to apply to your life.

John Wooden is best known for his 10 NCAA championship titles over the course of 12 years, but how did he do this? Wooden explains his morals and what he believes what success is for anyone to understand. He uses anecdotes not only from basketball but also from his away from the court to help elucidate his point. Ultimately, he feels that there isn't anything really special about his knowledge of basketball compared to other coaches. It's just fundamental principles that many have overlooked. Therefore, it is a good read for anyone--not just from people who are interested in basketball. Wooden's divides his book in mini section where there is a lesson to be learned in every section--where some may or may not affect you. He follows it with examples in his life or his own explanations which I found very interesting.

At the same time, I'd say that this is the biggest drawback of his book. Since the book is divided into small sections, sometimes I feel that he abruptly changes from one topic to another. This short transitions killed my pacing when I was reading the book. I found myself wishing for each passage to be much longer to make it more enjoyable and smooth. However, I do feel that Wooden supplies enough information to prove his point in those sections. Whether it's about his definition of success, knowing you did everything within your limits of doing the very best you can do or making sure your shoes and socks fit perfectly to your feet without any creases, he makes sure to complete his thoughts and reasons for the things he states. But I don't believe that this flaw, compared to the vast insight given in this book, is enough to deduct any points of 5 stars.

Overall, this book is phenomenal. I feel that everyone is able to reap benefits and learn something new by reading this book because he emphasis the importance of strong character. It's not just about basketball, in fact, many of his students say the same thing: he coached basketball, but he also coached skills that applied after basketball. The things he says and asks always makes me rethink about what I can improve in my own life, and I'm sure that it will affect the readers who are wiling to learn. Thus, I recommend this book to anyone of any age who is willing to change their perspective on the very journey to success.
