Kind of an awkward book, but well written and probably excellent for some kids

This is probably a very good read for a child who's been through some sort of trauma or scare, even a mild one. I gave it back a star for that thought alone, and as a therapist specializing in children's trauma I think I would definitely recommend this book in that situation. In my son's situation, however, it created worry and concerns where there were previously none, and after a few reads I actually hid the book because I felt like it was stressing him out. Good author, situationally a good book, but this isn't a light-hearted pirate adventure like I had hoped.

Dollar store book at best

This isn't so much about pirates as it is about using the word "Pirate" to sell a flop of a book. This doesn't read like a story, it reads like some nonsense a mom makes up as she's trying to close the door on her 3 year old who keeps asking questions to avoid bedtime. It's just a bunch of nothing spread over several pages with some above average illustrations. There is no rhyme, rhythm or substance to hold it together, just pages of "but mom, what if..." and a sappy ending which omits the whole pirate theme suggested by the title. It's just a dud all around and a waste of a bedtime story in our house.

Reminds me of "I Love You, Stinkyface"

But Mama, what if this... what if this?

This is a great story for reminding a child that Mama will come and get them and keep them safe, no matter what.

Still, we have quite a lot of overprotective parents rescuing their grown children from life's vagaries... this book can only reinforce those unfortunate attitudes.

Simply excellent illustrations. This book reminds me greatly of "I Love You, Stinkyface" by Cyd Moore, only Stinkyface is a better story. I Love You Stinky Face
