A very accessible guide to Ignatian discernment

This book is well written and engaging for real-world people who might find the writings of St. Ignatius a little impenetrable. The author makes the subject very accessible and practical, without dumbing down anything or minimizing spirituality. I was very pleased; I think it's the best book I've read on the topic, in terms of making Ignatian Discernment practical for ordinary folks. I'm middle aged, but I read this book based on the recommendation of a number of college students, so I think it is relevant and appealing to a very broad audience.

It’s too subjective. All based on what the core direction your goals are coming from (toward god or away from god). It just didn’t help me. I bought it because of the reviews.

The author does an excellent job of giving adequate clues inviting us to think about discernment. The invitation in the Mass to be Through Him, With Him and In Him is made evident through the division of the book into small sections of how discernment grows within us. There are major steps to help discernment become more realistic in how to become better at it. Spending time in prayer and reflection concerning the gifts that the Holy Spirit has given us and continues to polish plays out carefully and cautiously in the text. It is an easy read as the author constantly calls us to the importance of reflecting what God's will is for each one of us and accepting the graces to carry it out.

Discerning With God By Our Side

I just finished reading this book about a week ago and it is one of the BEST books I have ever read. So much so that it has pushed me to leave my first book review ever! It truly changed my life by helping me to understand a bit better how to discern God's will (or attempt to) with Him by my side. It helped me to trust God regarding present situations, and to realize calmly what I am called to do regarding my (academic) future. I think this book is fantastic for discernment in general, and while Father Mark mentions that it is not supposed to be a how-to guide, it has definitely taught me how to listen to God more attentively and how to differentiate the pull of the false spirit and the good spirit within me. It is still a work in progress for me, but I have to say I feel this book has given me the tools I needed not just for good and wise decision-making, but also what I needed to come closer to truly surrender to the will of God. Thank you both to Father Mark and to wonderful Saint Ignatius, who amazes me more and more with each passing day! :)

Finding Our Way by Detecting God's Voice

"What should I do to be happy and how can I find out?" could be the subtitle of this book, a modern rendering of the rules of discerning God's will offered by St. Ignatius of Loyola 500 years ago. Jesuit Father Mark Thibodeaux presents these rules with clear and contemporary examples in this slim volume introduced by fellow Jesuit and popular author Fr. Jim Martin.

Those already familiar with two other Thibodeaux books, "Armchair Mystic" and "God I Have Issues" will not be surprised that he is able to present these rules in such an engaging manner. His experience working with young people and introducing young Jesuits to Ignatian spirituality help make the examples he uses pertinent and interesting. By following the steps and applying them to our own situation, we should be able to begin to see how the process increases the self-awareness needed to act more freely in choosing what will really bring us happiness. It is uncanny how what is described by Ignatius in the 16th century corresponds so well with what is described by many contemporary psychologists. Ignatian discernment is a genuine self-help process that has been tested for many centuries.

Thibodeaux describes the Ignatian discernment process, gives many practical tips on how to discern when we are in a good mood (consolation) and bad mood (desolation) and finally walks us through the steps to follow when making our most important decisions.

While it would be very valuable to just read this book, the reader would undoubtedly benefit much more by reading it and discussing how it applies to one's own life with a good friend, a companion on the spiritual journey or a spiritual director. These discussions and the honest feedback they should normally evoke will imprint the lessons learned more and promote the real change intended for one's life.

I recommend the book highly.

I would recommend it especially for young adults or older adults in a time of transition or anyone looking to grow in their faith. I am Catholic but will recommended this to my friends from other Christian denominations.

I love this book soo much! Ignation Spirituality is not always easy to understand, and Thibodeaux did a wonderful job of explaining it in a way that is easy to comprehend. Also his examples and personal stories in the book, are very easy to relate to. This book truly does help you to see how God works through you and how to figure out when you are in spiritual consolation and desolation, which I think is a useful thing to know for any Christian. Also it has good insights on life and how to deal with tough situations in healthy ways. I would recommend this book to everyone.

Love this book! It should be called "The Ignatian Rules of Discernment for Dummies." If you want to excel in spiritual discernment so you can understand how God is moving in your life, and so you can discern the best choices to make, this is the manual for you. You still have to do the work in prayer, but Fr. Thibodaux makes it practical for lay people with busy lives and good hearts. Enjoy!
