A SUPERB READ

Hopkirk addresses a little known chapter in the exploration of ancient Silk Road sites and the story he tells of the mass rip-off by a number of Western archaeologists and pseudo-archaeologists is fascinating. Frankly, this certainly wasn't our finest hour in solidifying positive relations with the Chinese, who have every right, along with other Silk Road countries impacted by these cheeky "foreign devils", to be well and truly angry about it all. Still, the story of what happened is simply fascinating, including the staggering hardships faced by those Western explorers, and Hopkirk tells this impeccably-researched story well. I recommend this book to you without reservation.
As an aside, a fairly recent and very significant find has been made in the Tarim Basin -- beautifully preserved Caucasian mummies thousands of years old. There is much information about this discovery available on the web as well as in a book or two that you can purchase here. Fascinating stuff!
