5.0 out of 5 starsWritten in 1926 but describes my 2020....

I ordered this because I saw an online article titled something to the effect of "how Lolly Willowes becomes a witch and destroys the patriarchy", and this book did not disappoint.

While it is satire, it mirrored many parts of my 2020, and I just loved it. I think any woman can find something to appreciate in this slim novel.

2.0 out of 5 starsSpoiler alert: hugely disappointing.
Reviewed in the United States on January 19, 2022
I bought this based on other reviewers' opinions. The idea of an early 20th century English woman freeing herself from her upbringing & a life of unpaid servitude was appealing; that she became a WITCH was irresistible. But I found the author's writing style from 100 years ago was overly descriptive of minute details & very tedious. The entire first half of the book covers her 47 years spent selflessly commited to looking after her parents & siblings, including her selfish brother who lost most of her Inheritance through unwise investments. When she finally leaves these ingrates & escapes, most of the rest of the book describes her endless walks thru the countryside. She finally reaches some sort of personal resolution by concluding she has always been different and, after getting bitten by a stray kitten, concludes she is a witch. Her only witch ability is to make milk go sour. One reviewer mentioned Lolly "cavorting with the devil" and I wish she had. But there is no cavorting of any kind in this very G rated story.

4.0 out of 5 stars more like a slow cruise down the river than a high-speed chase

This book might not be for everyone. The pace is very slow and leisurely. There isn't much action, in fact periods of 20 years go by without much action. However, the writing is elegant, flowing and rhythmical, a pleasure to read. There isn't a single sentece in the book that is jarring or out of place. The story is based on the lives of superfluous women after WWI and the Spanish influenza killed off a lot of males that would otherwise have been available for marriage. It is also a nod to the suspicion in which society in general has held unmarried women, and the fact that for a long time there was no place for them in society - they couldn't go out and work and live independent lives and so were often just used by their relatives as unpaid labor in exchange for a place to live and financial support. There really isn't any witchcraft in the book, at least not the Harry Potter kind of witchcraft. Lolly Willowes's pact with the devil is just how her sudden desire for independance would seem to her friends and relatives - the devil got into her.

Overall the book is a pleasure to read, but you have to be willing to slow down and enjoy the scenery.

4.0 out of 5 stars And while I understand that women who enjoy peace, quiet
Reviewed in the United States on April 16, 2016

Lolly Willowes is definitely not for everyone. Laura "Lolly" is dependent on her father and then her brother for her survival throughout her life. After her father dies, she becomes nanny to her brother's children. When the children are grown and she can escape to a life that is fully her own, she does. The result is the most exquisite description of her fully experiencing life on her own terms. I dare say it is what many women feel after their children are grown and they can (Finally!) explore their own lives and interests without the encumbrances of being beholden to taking care of other's lives. Then, her nephew, Titus, visits her, far too long and intrudes upon her peace. It is an apt description of not wanting to share your life and all the treasures and pleasures one discovers alone, and how spoiled life becomes after being forced to share it once again. And while I understand that women who enjoy peace, quiet, and solitude perhaps would at one time in history been considered witches, I was dismayed and extremely disappointed that Warner would choose to undo her lovely work with such ridiculous nonsense as becoming a witch and cavorting with Satan for the last 50 pages. I understand her beautifully constructed world was spoiled as if it would be had Satan himself touched her treasured surroundings and delicious experiences, but surely she could have found a better way to show it than the way she did---thus I withheld the fifth star for my review.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lolly is Lovely and Likeable for a while ...

I truly enjoyed this book mainly because I enjoy the occasional read where you are slowly involved in the protagonist's life. I was traveling along with Lolly when all of a sudden she took an unexpected and, honestly, unlikely turn. I like endings that are endings. I am not sure if Lolly is or has she finally gotten the insight to not be. It was worth reading and worth at least four stars

This book twists, and turns, and plays on one's soul with ideas most women have thought about and never expressed as clearly as Lolly Willowes is finally able to do. I'll read it again for all it nuances, and for the sheer joy of being free !

Really liked the overall plot. Most characters were fairly one dimensional except for the title character; and even then I'm not sure I totally bought her long period of passivity. Second half of the book is much quicker paced. Overall an enjoyable read but not perfect.

Clever spinster becomes witch by going to village with wonderful name of Great Mop where there is a kind of coven concealed by rural charm( a bit like Midsomer Murders). The respectable family which she escapes is presented as deadly--all the more so because they are doing their duty by her as a Maiden Aunt.
Characters such as the Devil and Titus the artistic nephew are beautiful comic creations. A fine picture of England between the wars complete with women needing a room of their own and touches of nature worship .
Letty's account of being a witch as a good alternative for unmarried or widowed women strikes a fine feminist note. I was left hoping she would go back to being a herbalist.

Beautifully written story about a woman creating an independent life in the only way she knew how, given the times she was living in. Quirky and insightful with moments of brilliance.

4.0 out of 5 stars white lady for taking her money to get a house of her own seems to miss the point anacrhonistically and to miss some fine writing and biting satire in the process
Reviewed in the United States on July 24, 2017

Warner's novel is quite lovely. I fear that anyone who purchases it for "feminism" or "witchcraft" or "objections to the patriarchy" will be missing the boat, and probably the entire ocean, as the complaint behind the satire in the novel seems to me to be of "spinsterhood" and the categories of "usefulness." Townsend Warner takes aim at the notion that a woman is defined in context instead of in herself, that she is always an adjunct, whether that is as a married woman, a procreative woman, or as an "aunt lolly," that the self is erased beneath the contextual tension. Her heroine decides she is a witch in a Blakean sense, no more. She is a servant of William Blake's Satan, who is, quite frankly, not enemy of God. One may see her rebellion as a reversion to a pre-Edwardian consciousness (of, if we're honest, patrician wealth). Being too proud of this rich, white lady for taking her money to get a house of her own seems to miss the point anacrhonistically and to miss some fine writing and biting satire in the process.
