This plot was interesting, but I was a little confused about Libbie's "gifts" and it had me distracted through the story. I find it hard that Libbie was involved in two deaths, though accidental but never implicated. However, the story held my attention to the point that I bought book two. I will say, I am happy she ended up with the guy she did...because I was rooting for those two and never really liked Dan. I could have done with a little more character descriptions, but this wasn't a bad book.

A story of forgiveness, learning to forgive yourself as well as others. No bad words. A clean read. I could identify with the love of the old home and the beautiful terrace that was added as well as the dog. I love books that include pets, especially dogs, and this one did. I often include them in my own books. I enjoy reading books about old homes, which is why I bought this one. A good story of overcoming darkness and depression and understanding others. Libbie was a strong character, and I could also identify with the way she wanted to fix up her new home her own way and how she loved the open windows and hated to close them in with draperies. She wanted to let the light in and enjoy the outdoors. If you're looking for a good, clean read and enjoy old homes and fixing them up, this might be the book for you. Also, if you enjoy novels of redemption and forgiveness, you'll want to check out this one. My favorite characters was Max the dog.

(ajk) avid reader
4.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful and enjoyable novel
Reviewed in the United States on March 6, 2017

Grace Greene uses a slightly different writing style with this novel that works extremely well. The reader begins the novel and has hit the end without realizing it.

Such wonderful and realistic characters bring this novel to life. The sheriff, who has some helpful and not so helpful qualities, as far as Libbie is concerned. The lawn and garden owner, Jim, who always is there when Libbie needs help with her garden projects, but also with life. The cousin who has an opinion and thought about almost anything, good or bad, and many others. She inherits a dog, and an elderly neighbor. And finds ways to adjust to her new environment, which seems to fit her better, for the most part.

An enjoyable and heartwarming novel, "Cub Creek" is a story about changes, growing, moving forward a step at a time, and finding friends in the places you least expected them.

Good Book Lover
5.0 out of 5 stars Libbie Finds Her Own Life
Reviewed in the United States on June 7, 2016

Libbie buys an old house in Virginia that a landscaper was interested in and he helps her build a terrace and plant flowers that he suggests. The local police officer is interested in Libbie, too. She shares the same name Elizabeth with her cousin, Liz, who treats her like a mental patient because of past problems Libbie has had to deal with, namely the grandmother. The former owner of the house who has passed away had a dog that became friends with Libbie. The cousin's two young children love Libbie's new home and visiting there. In the woods around the house, a disturbed young man who all think is not violent hides out there. An elderly friend of the former owner comes and goes at will from the nursing home to Libbie's home. This book, like other books by Grace Greene is full of extra-ordinary but well-defined characters and everyone in this book wants to help Libbie live her life. I love it that she found her own independence. A Good Book, I Love it.

2.0 out of 5 stars I kept waiting for it to get better but it never did.

First of all, I love this author and I have really enjoyed her previous novels...usually her characterizations are great and easily identifiable...having said that, I just could never like or dislike the main character, Libbie, in this book...the plot was slow, almost plodding, and sometimes just plain unbelievable...Libbie buys a house & property she just happens to find when she's lost, has all sorts of emotional problems stemming from her childhood, and doesn't like being around people. The only character I really liked was the dog, Max, since he was the only one whose actions were normal. I finished the book as confused as when I began because it just seemed to have no purpose...I was extremely disappointed and will have to rethink buying anymore of this authors writings...this was just too long-winded and totally boring...

5.0 out of 5 stars Heart grabbing story

Grace Greene has done it again.
Libbie Havens was raised by her Grandmother who was a bitter and heartless woman. Libbie was abused as a child by her Grandmother and because of this she had to create her own survival skills to move on in life. A lot of her childhood experiences shaped her but at the same time she was a survivor.
She lost her parents when she was five, raised by her bitter Grandmother, could not trust people, people thought she was not sane, and she was a survivor.
Libbie Havens touch a place in my heart and had me cheering her on to keep surviving.
I laughed, cried, and smiled throughout the story. It is a heart grabbing story and I felt like I was part of the story looking in on Libbie's life.
I highly recommend this book and all books by Grace Greene. She can tell a story that grabs and keeps you wanting for more.

This book evokes so many emotions in me. It dealt with mental illness, people’s misunderstanding and refusal to learn the truth, instead judging needlessly and causing much hurt. I laughed at times and cried at times. I loved this book and can’t wait to read Leaving Cub Creek to see how Libby’s life continues. I definitely would recommend this book.

Cub Creek caught my attention right in the beginning. A woman of mystery on impulse buys an old home in hopes of finding peace for herself and to get away from crowds of people who only want to help her but doesn't understand her pain. She finds solace , a love for children, and an interesting community . She also finds a pet dog that once belong to the former owner of the home which some declare haunted. Love interest included two cousins. A very enjoyable read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great novel!

I really enjoy Grace Greene's novels, but I think 'Cub Creek: A Virginia Roads Novel' is my favorite. Some books are gone in an instant after being read, but the settings, the characters (especially Libby), and the storyline remain in my memory.

First of all, I loved the suspense of the 'What's going to happen next?' moments. I read Cub Creek in one sitting because I just couldn't put it down.

Cub Creek is a beautiful story, beautifully told by an amazing and sensitive writer. I was so pulled into the story that every time I sensed Libby making a mistake I was silently giving her advice. I found it fascinating how Libby (the main character) could so easily recognize her flaws and yet wasn't aware of her own strengths. And, isn't that the way it is with most of us? We're so afraid to leave our own comfort zone and yet, when we do amazing things can happen. I thought that Libby's personal growth was skillfully written and although she has further to go, I'd like to be with her in the next book and watch her progress.

I like Libby so much, that I'd love to have her for a friend. She seems like a real person and was so well written that if Libby were to walk into a room I'd know her immediately.

I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.
