This first book has drawn me into the world of the Black Tower with characters who are both honorable and flawed. Some of the scenes are dark and disturbing but not gratuitously so. I'm now ready to explore further.
I was hooked after the first page! A very well written action packed riveting book. When I read I am transported into the story so that I can feel, taste, smell, and hear everything going on. Mr. Conner writes a very descriptive story that will have you engrossed and not wanting to put the book down. I look forward to book #2! Buy this book because I guarantee it is well worth the price and then some! !!
This is a must read book! It grabbed my interest and attention from page 1. The characters were completely lifelike. They're adventures wanted you to follow remand were easy to follow and keep track of. I was always on the edge of my chair waiting to see what would happen next and to whom. This book is not predictable in any way at all. You think the story is going to go 1 way and it completely goes off in another direction. The characters made you love them and had you picking favorites. It also made you feel for the ones that fell on the side. Like Salthrick, a loyal and true friend, that became possessed and had to be executed by his best friend Baleron. It also has real love in it, Baleron and Shelir. It has hope and despair. Plenty of action. I am looking forward to the next book to see what happens next.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
First, the bad - there's too much detail on the sex scenes for my taste. It doesn't add anything to the story. Much of the tactical writing is very predictable, and the whole first book is about the good guys getting their collective asses handed to them. While I enjoy a good setup, I think this could have been handled so that all the "good" races don't appear quite so utterly stupid and incompetent, but then again, maybe that's the point in the macro story.
The good - at a macro level, the story is much more about the bad guys and their machinations, many of which are inscrutable and mysterious, which I like a lot. It's different and refreshing. Overall, I'm enjoying where the story is going and want to find out what happens, which should be the point of most books.
