I ordered this book for my granddaughter who will be 12 in December. The book arrived this afternoon and if it has 122 pages, the print must be VERY small because just looking at the book inside the Amazon wrapper, I know it is going back tomorrow! Thin, thin, thin. Not worth $9.60.

4.0 out of 5 stars ~~ Life in a wheelchair but not giving up ~~
Reviewed in the United States ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ on September 19, 2018

Due to a virus, Mary (12) is in a wheelchair, unable to walk. The year is 1952. Her father, determined to find a cure, is a little over-protective. Mary enjoys sketching the horses in the field next door. Unable to attend school thus having a private tutor, Mary is thrilled when her next door neighbor, Laura (12), comes over to say "Hello". Laura's parents are the opposite of Mary's dad, not taking much notice of Laura at all. (Mary's mother has been dead for several years.) Laura's mother is more concentrated on her equitation.

Buggy rides! What fun for a girl who has always dreamed that she will ride. What's so special about the filly, Illusion? Why do the girls have to come up with a scheme to save her? Is there a cure for Mary?

WARNING: Some parts of this story give sad impressions of what may happen. If you have a sensitive child there may be tears before the end!

Book has a good ending. There is no cliff hanger although it does leave you wanting to read the next one. The writing is okay. I found it a little stilted at times BUT I am an adult. A child reading this would likely not sense this at all. The book is clean, NO bad language or any inappropriate behavior. For those who want to know, the girls do pray once in a while when things get tough and they do not know what to do.

I downloaded this book onto my Kindle. I was not required to write a review but chose to do so. Thanks, Liz

Mary is a twelve-year-old handicapped young lady. Her mother died when she was three; no one wants to talk about it. Mary lives with her father and a housekeeper. The story is set in 1952. Her father constantly searches for a possible medical breakthrough to cure his daughter. Mary is strong-willed and determined. Her best friend, Laura, rides and cares for horses at her home. The girls become obsessed with saving a horse named Illusion who needs surgery. They find ways of earning money toward that end.

Maryโ€™s overprotective father frequently gets upset with Maryโ€™s obstinate behavior. Laura and Mary disobey their parents and end up in trouble often, but that means lots of interesting adventures along the way. Will the girls be able to save Illusion? Can Maryโ€™s father find a medical cure to help Laura walk again?

Middle-grade and young adult readers will find the antics of these two friendsโ€™ fun and endearing. There is lots of humor and a few surprises in store for readers. Two strong female role models and a tender story of animal love will appeal to a wide audience. Highly recommended. I look forward to reading the sequel.

A cute book with a somewhat serious subject matter. My 7 yr old likes it and we read the book over several nights. My only gripe is the book is somewhat immaturely written. Itโ€™s overly descriptive and seems, at times, written by a first time author. Some grammar mistakes as well. My daughter doesnโ€™t mind however, as she has enjoyed the book very much. Some proof reading and editing would help this book tremendously. Would read again and will look for other books by this author bc my daughter enjoyed this one.

In this story of two young girls and their fight to save a crippled filly the characters are well rounded and believable for the times. Their innocence in the face of the impending dangers and possible death of the animal is believable for a bygone time although perhaps not as much so in this modern realistic era. The scene where Mary swam in the ocean and felt her legs getting stronger read very well and was encouraging although the ending was not a surprise.Even though there were a few o obstacles in the overall story they were easily overcome but any young girl would enjoy the horse info and general knowledge gleaned from reading this book. The loving family dynamics expressed by the father and employees of the family were obvious throughout the book. I think any girl who loves horses would enjoy this read. It's been a while since I read it but 'Horse whisperer' and ' wild Hearts Can't Be Broken' have similar handicapped themes.

Mary and Laura became dearest friends (and friends may wear different socks when they are together). Mary is sitting in a wheelchair. Her dad tries everything to help her walk again. And so does Laura. They both love horses.

They are excited that the Silver Medal at the Olympic Games went to a woman who is sitting in a wheelchair. For Mary and her friend this is clear Mary can dreaming to ride a horse one day. Together the girls moved mountains to take care of a foal.

Will they succeed, will Mary be able to walk again? You have to read the book to know this answer. But I can reveal you that you it is exciting to do so.

Mary's song is a sweet story about a handicap girl and a foal she is determined to save. This is a good story for young horse lovers.

I personally was irritated by the lead characters behavior at times, but she is a young somewhat spoiled girl, so it was understandable.

Overall this story is worthwhile reading material for horse crazy kids.

I was looking for books that would intrest my 13 year old Grandson, and came across this book and almost gobbled it whole, never putting it down. It was a lot like books I read as a girl. Now I had better get back to finding him a book.

Mary's Song has a compelling plot; wheelchair-bound Mary sketches and falls in love a hobbled foal about to be euthanized. With her friend Laura, whose father owns Illusion, she struggles to find a way to save the horse and stand on her own two feet. I didn't want to put the book down--stayed up way too late reading it. Any who has ever loved a horse will love this book.

Written for young adults re: girls who love horses.
Enjoyed the story mostly because I raised a club footed mare. Had surgery to cut check ligament done too late. But, she was rideable most of her life anyway.

This is a sweet story about a determined girl confined to a wheelchair who loves horses. Recommended for ages 8 and up, especially girls who are horse-crazy like I was at that age!
