5.0 out of 5 starsA Gothic Masterpiece
Reviewed in the United States on September 3, 2020
THE HUSH is an incredible read filled with spookiness, friendships that last, enemies that fester until they rot away their sense of right and wrong and fall prey to the temptations of injustice and vindictiveness.

The story is a romance between a young man and the land he inherited. It is a revelation of true abiding friendship and brotherly love. It is sorrowful and at last hopeful. It is vindication and the true victory of rightness and purity. It is a reflection on madness and the insanity that only evil can produce. It is finally a victory of light over darkness.

The author is gifted and his books are a gift to mankind.

2.0 out of 5 starsI have loved all of John Hart's books and I loved this ...
Reviewed in the United States on March 12, 2018
I have loved all of John Hart's books and I loved this one throughout the first half; could not put it down. But then it veered off into the supernatural. It became a horror story which is a genre I do not enjoy, wholly unbelievable and rather silly. And when the story ended, many threads of it were left unexplained. After all his previous wonderful books, this one was a huge disappointment. This one read like bad young adult fiction, the kind you don't want your kids to read. I get that he means to bring to light the legacy of slavery but this was not the way to do it.

5.0 out of 5 stars 'Don't do it, old friend."

Like The Last Child, The Hush is lush and hypnotic in its descriptions, with a frightening calm flowing below the chaos and violence of the the narrative's surface. Friendship -- and faith -- are at the center of The Hush, providing the context for everything in a story that spans centuries and genres.

Strangely -- fittingly -- only the friendships of men are examined, while the connections between women remain deeper and stronger, darker and mysterious, beyond analysis. I think only a man could have told this story this way -- with equal parts fear and fascination, insights far different than a woman might have offered. This is a book I already look forward to reading again.

What a wonderful series these two books I recommend to everyone I am fortunate that I read the Last Child first and the Hush second to me it made a difference. I can't thank the author enough for picking me up and throwing me in to a familiar area of course not the killing or the death. But the encampment of being so close to nature that you can feel it all the way to your bones. Being a Louisiana boy from the bayou myself it brought back found memories of youth and the simplicity of life by being caught up in nature brings. Thank you Mr Hart

It was a great follow up novel to ' The Last Child'. I don't want to use the impression of sequel because it can be a stand alone story. It is a very different type of story that was compelling and very engrossing. Only criticism is the author uses full names a lot. Maybe it is just a pet peeve of mine because it drives me a little crazy. It was done in the previous book too. I am hoping another novel with these characters is written. I adore them and feel they have more to say and experience.

Once again, Jon Hart captivated this reader. He leads us into a mysterious place called, The Hush, then effortlessly brings us back to civilization time and time again. At last the secrets long hidden are revealed. Mr Hart's prose reads like poetry. His characters live in in your heart and mind. He is that rare thing, a true wordsmith. You'll not be able to put this down until very secret is revealed, and you know just how thin time is. A masterful work

This book will drag you in and hold you there until finished. Finally a second book that answered all the questions that I had from the first book, The Last Child. John Hart is a excellent author and I am so happy to add his name to my list of authors that are a must read. Good mystery and a good story about things that have no explanation unless you take them on faith. I 100% give this my highest recommendation. Just a excellent read.

This book is wonderful. It's a stand alone book . However if you read the previous books the story carries more meaning. John Hart is a master.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very different style for John Hart

I’ve read all of John Hart’s books, and I must say this one is different than the others. While he stuck to his usual psychological thriller/lawyer scenario, this one involved the supernatural on top of it. Hart’s books are always engaging and will keep you on the edge of your seat—this one did just that! I found myself vividly imagining the Hush and feeling the anxiety and fear of the characters. For any John Hart fan, The Hush will not disappoint!

The author wove a beautiful tapestry in this well written tale. Be careful when you pick it up because you just might not be able to put it down. Kudos to John Hart! Proud that you are a fellow North Carolinian...
