5.0 out of 5 starsCJ Box Writes Another Excellent Story
Reviewed in the United States on August 19, 2019
This is another excellent story. And, this time it is not about Joe Pickett, showing that CJ Box can create excellent characters and write about them. This story is about a private investigator, Cassie Dewell, who is requested by a lawyer to look into a possible rape case. This investigation takes her to one of the remote places in northwestern Montana near the Idaho border and the Bitterrott Mountains, hence the name of the book. And, the story brings Cassie to a very dysfunctional and evil family, and a corrupt county police department (owned by this family). The story gets more and more interesting as it continues, with the pieces starting to fall in place. At about 1/3 way through the book it was hard to put down. I'm looking forward to the next CJ Box book, whether it is Joe Pickett, Cassie Dewell or another character that he develops.

3.0 out of 5 starsA Let Down
Reviewed in the United States on August 20, 2019
This is the first CJ Box book that I did not rate a 5, and I've read them all.

After the character Cassie had to deal with the Lizard King, I figured Box had all sorts of threads that could be followed and woven into a great book, but Bitterroots misses the mark, by a long shot.

My first impression was this book had been handed off to a female ghost writer, or Box has been exploring his feminine side. I'm totally OK with female authors...I'm a big Dianne Capris fan. But what happened to the strong Cassie? Bitterroots made her out to be a weak, whiney, indecisive, over drinker...not the same woman that did in the Lizard King.

Bottom line, this book was a disappointment. I sure hope Box does not wimp out Joe Pickett or Nate Romanaski or Sherridan Pickett....that would be a shame.

2.0 out of 5 stars More whine than action

In this story the main character is a basically unhappy, judgmental, unpleasant soul. The story seems more about her unhappiness with her life and the people in it than about an actual plot. When you start a story off with a private investigator who doesn't really want to do the job she has been hired to do, and who. before even meeting the person she is investigating, decides he is both guilty and despicable there really isn't going to be an upside. And there was not. I think I will pass on any future "Cassie Dewell" novels.

5.0 out of 5 stars A compelling mystery thriller

The Bitterroots by C.J. Box features Cassie Dewel, who took over from the late Cody Hoyt after he was murdered while investigating a long-haul truck driver who turned out to be a serial killer. Cassie is finished with law enforcement and is now a private detective working out of Bozeman, Montana. She's still struggling to get established and has formed an alliance with Rachel Mitchell, a defense attorney in Bozeman. Working for the defense grates on her and even more so when Rachel asks Cassie to look into the case of Blake Kleinsasser, the prodigal son of a prominent Lochsa County family, who's been accused of raping his 15-year-old niece. Cassie only agrees to take on the case after Rachel tells her she wants her to check the evidence so she can convince the defendant to take a plea. Cassie's not far removed from being a police officer herself and figures the evidence will demonstrate that this is an open and shut case, especially after meeting the arrogant Blake.
Cassie's challenges as a single mother raising her son, Ben, with the help of her elderly ex-hippie mother, Isabel, both anchors her life and threatens to careen out of control. Ben's trying to find a way to fit in at a new high school and has few friends with one great exception: another new student, a girl, Erin Reese.
Like the Joe Pickett series, Box has an eye for detail including regional history and wry observations of life in the less populated parts of the country where his stories primarily take place. I haven't checked all the locations but wouldn't be surprised if some of them were as fictional as 12 Sleep County, Joe Pickett's home. The point is that it doesn't really matter. Box knows his country and countrymen and tells his tales with detail and precision. The treatment of texts between characters is convincingly done.
Since this is a crime thriller it's no surprise that Lochsa County is a murky swamp of a place where the smoke of wildfires broods and corrupts almost as much as the family at the heart of the story. The characters are well-observed and convincing. Box has fashioned several surprises that keep you turning the pages. Those who are familiar with the works of C.J. Box know that lurking in small towns are characters every bit as dangerous as what you might encounter in a dark alley in a major city. While this contains echoes of Tayler Sheridan’s Yellowstone, Box doesn't disappoint and this reader welcomes each new novel.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing

This book was a terrible disappointment to me. As a reader of all of the Joe Pickett books, this book does not seem to have been written by the same author. The excessive profanity is completely unnecessary. I assume that Mr. Box has unfortunately succumbed to modern society's slide into perversity. I will continue to look forward to Joe Pickett stories, but Cassie Dewell has left my building!

I like the way the character of Cassie Dewell is developing in this series and I'm looking forwarding to reading more about her. Just like my favorite, Joe Pickett, Cassie is a real person with a life and a family and problems outside law enforcement. Her mother is an aging hippie who somewhat reluctantly helps her keep track of her teenage son. She struggles with all the problems inherent in being a single mother and still manages to be smarter and more persistent than the bad guys.

C.J.Box never disappoints readers and this book kept my attention from page one through the last paragraph. A mystery full of characters that are appalling easy to believe. Human nature at its best and worst. You won't guess the whole story until it is revealed at the very end. Recommend to all.

Having read all the Joe Pickett books I picked up this one on a kindle deal and really enjoyed it. About half way through I couldn't put it down and finished it in a day.

This book started off slower than most of CJ Box’s books, but it was easy to be sympathetic with Cassie, because I’ve read the other thrillers she’s been involved in. It didn’t take long to find the hook, and I couldn’t put it down until the battery on my device told me I had to recharge! CJ Box paints every detail in the scene to make you feel like you are really there, to the point that I was ready to duck every time she turned another corner. I’ve read every one of his Joe Pickett books as well as all of the stand-alones. Another great book, CJ!

Started off a little slow but quickly got me turning pages. So many twists and turns I had to keep turning pages. As the story kept moving the surprises continued to mount up. The climax just absolutely tied everything up for me. I’m curious if we see the main character tangled up again with the 3 characters who “rode away” at the end. Can’t wait.
