Becket Hampton Warren
5.0 out of 5 starsHolly Black’s “debut” Adult Novel
Reviewed in the United States on May 8, 2022
I have the term debut set aside by quotation marks in the title of my review because, at fifty-seven years of age, I have voraciously read as many of Holly Black’s YA offerings as I could get my greedy hands on. (Or ought I to write, on which I could get my greedy hands? Proper grammar and usage is surely more adult, right?)

Book of Night fits neatly into the author’s canon: her world-building, her inclusion of magic, her thoroughly-realized characters, and her astute almost preternatural grasp of exactly how much information and detail to feed her readers —and what to withhold— will all feel familiar in the best ways to her fans.

Charlie, the novel’s heroine, has the grit, determination, and drive to pursue her goals. Charlie’s activities involve theft, larceny, and the art of the grift, and she tiptoes across dangerous tightrope strung above highly toxic, unprincipled foes. Charlie also works to protect her younger sister (sometimes from herself), and tries to figure out her complicated relationship with her secretive but gentle and kind lover, Vince, work.

These traits make her intriguing, but it is the author’s deft handling of Charlie’s unorthodox past, her traumas, wounds (literal and figurative), insecurities, and disappointments that make the reader root for Charlie despite her faults and rash decisions.

I am eager to read more of Holly Black’s adult fiction, and I’ll still gobble up her YA novels as well. This author truly delights readers of many ages. If you have not read her books, hie thee to a bookstore. You won’t be sorry.

1.0 out of 5 starsSomewhat Interesting Plot, Poor Characters
Reviewed in the United States on May 7, 2022
May be some minor spoilers

To start, we are introduced to Charlie who is described as a girl who was "crooked, from the day she was born" and "had fingers made for pick pockets, a tongue for lying, and a shriveled cherry pit for a heart." This girl is constantly described as being the best at what she does and that she "[had] been too good at it... now she was a regular person." This was established within the first few pages of the book.

So, Charlie for the most part gave up this life 10 months prior. Okay, but then the rest of the book happens and she has a complete shift in personality within the first 100 pages. For a FMC who supposedly has seen some serious stuff and "not a lot rattled her," the moment someone does something she didn't expect, she turned into a innocent, wide-eyed little girl and proceeds to take the entire situation in the worst way possible and acts irrationally and pretty childish at times.

She also is apparently always "intrigued" and "excited" about a potential new job and/or heist because we are also told that she gets a HUGE thrill over letting out her "worst impulses" but this surprise? Oh no, it's "her party and she will cry if she wants" to vibe.

Without giving away the plot or specifics, something happens and despite Charlie's supposed being a bada$$ and has seen so much stuff since she was like 14, she suddenly turns into a "I can't possibly believe..." and "[insert name] may want to [unalive] me" like she has never, ever seen or heard of this kind of thing before and she has never been in danger (yes she absolutely has), BUT she supposedly can read people like an open book?

For a character that is repeatedly told to me as a reader that she is super smart and has so much experience, she acts for the vast majority of the book like someone who is clueless to the not-so-legal activities when she herself is a con artist. She is also super hypocritical and does not like to be called out when she is clearly in the wrong, but we are supposed to feel bad for her because "she just f**ks everything up because that is her family legacy."

There is also the matter of the way too many flashbacks in this book. Rather than show how clever Charlie is and how good she is in the present timeline (especially since it would show how much she had learned over the YEARS she has done this), we only get a glimpse of her abilities in the "The Past" chapters when are nothing but flashbacks where they could easily be summarized into a paragraph or a sentence.

Yes there are some key moments in her life that is important, but I feel like they were only put there to make me care about Charlie as a character because what she does in the present timeline wouldn't make me like her otherwise.

Also the book in question is constantly referred to as "The Book of Blights" for 2/3 of the entire book by several characters but then for no reason, it gets referred to as "The Book of Night" and it is never commented on or questioned. I honestly went back to see if I had missed something but I could not find an explanation as to why this ONE character refers to it as "The Book of Night" and Charlie has literally nothing to say about it. My mind went to "Oh okay, roll credits then."

The magic system was... confusing. Even after reading some parts multiple times, it didn't feel fleshed out or maybe it just wasn't described very well. I think this was supposed to be on the more "softer magic" system edge where not much is really explained or easily understood. It's definitely not Brandon Sanderson quality magic systems.

This book was insanely frustrating for me. I'm glad that this book was for some readers out there because we all should read books that at the very least entertain us, but I would rather read Holly Black's Cruel Prince any day then this.

I had high expectations for this one. It is not a bad book, but just not my favorite. I love Holly Black’s writing style and the world building. The conflict with shadows and corrupt billionaire man is really interesting. I just found Charlie to a boring main character. I think the fact that she wasn’t an impulsive teenager/young adult really made a difference. Adults are kinda just boring for me. She isn’t a stable adult or anything, but its different from a typical holly black protagonist. This was a hard book for me to get through :(. Vince helped. He is very very interesting.
Overall, very average.

I really hope holly black keeps writing YA.

3.0 out of 5 stars ....over-hyped

This novel was my most anticipated 2022 release. I am a huge Holly Black fan, devouring her novels in the Folk of the Air, Modern Faerie Tales, Curse Workers, and even The Coldest Girl in Cold Town… but man did this fall flat for me. I felt like I had to really force myself to read this novel because the world being built felt so clunky. I'm not sure if Holly Black attempted to adjust her writing style to suit the needs of what "adult fiction" standards are, but this one missed its mark.
Knowing that the first readers of her YA series are coming for this novel, I expected more spice, tension, complex world building—and certainly not a series. This book seemed to be placed as a standalone, but based on the ending, another book is coming … and I don't think I'm lining up for the next book in this series.
The last few chapters did redeem the novel a bit, but it was mostly out of curiosity I finished the book rather than caring what happened to the characters. The characters felt a bit one dimensional and I didn't really see the romance as something that would elicit hero-esque action to save. Maybe I'm being a little harsh because of the self-inflicted hype, but definitely not my favorite Holly Black novel.

I typically like Holly Black. Her Folk of the Air series, for example, is solid gold. But this one really fell flat for me. I had trouble even finishing it. I think the basic shadow premise and necessary world building to explain the shadows wasn't fleshed out properly. The plot was lack luster and failed to keep my interest, which is unusual for Holly Black--typically plotting is her strong suit. Her writing style was less on point than usual too. Was it rushed? Was the whole concept never that great to begin with? Probably a bit of both. I will say the characters are decent and that was probably the only thing that kept me going. But overall, a disappointment.

I liked the idea of " shadow magic". But the concept as presented was very bare bones. Can anyone do it? Can it be used for anything other than crime? Are there other forms of magic? Why only shadows? And the magic itself was so very bleak. Put your negativity into your shadow. Feed it blood. Control others like puppets.
The only character I ended up liking was the villain! At least he was unapologetic in his actions and
attitudes. He had a single minded focus and to Hell with anything else! And he was frightening!
Every other character was whiny or annoying. Charlie was the worst! So much self-loathing but no real effort at change. Always this self-pity for making bad decisions but no real attempt to do anything different. She was EXHAUSTING!
The last 5 chapters were good and I started to hope for a good ending. I was so wrong and disappointed. I guess the author wanted to keep it "edgy". Up to that point, there was no explanation for the ending we got. And the few sentences she adds as a speculation are a toss-off.
All in all, a good idea that got lost somewhere in the author's quest to be "dark"

The story was really cool. It took me longer to read than other's I've read by Holly Black which I think might be because it wasn't written in a way I could easily follow along. I was confused at first about the multiple names used for certain characters but once I understood what was happening I was interested to know what would happen next. The book really picks up and gets interesting about 2/3 into it. The last 100 pages were fast paced and really interesting. I would definitely read a sequel if one came out.

The book ends on a downer & the heroines whole world is pretty depressing. That, coupled with the crazy price for an ebook & this should have been a pass for me.

Holly Black’s adult debut, Book of Magic is a story filled with magical realism and a twisted plot involving murder and theft of items of magical power. In a world where power is everything and shadows are more than they seem, this is a story that will have you turning the pages long into the night.
In some respect, you could also call this book an Urban Fantasy but with more mystery than usual. The setting is urban and very modern though it did take a bit of reading to fully get an idea of this new world order. In a world where “shadow” magic is trending, everyone wants the latest perk added to their shadow.

Charlie is a reformed (mostly) thief bar-tending now as she tries to help her sister get through college. She lives with her boyfriend, Vince and sister and life is normal for the most part until an old high school acquaintance asks for Charlie’s help in wondering what her boyfriend is up to. Charlie has left her conning days behind her but when the payment is a favor that can help her sister’s college tuition out, she has to at least try.

What Charlie gets herself mixed up in is something far bigger than she could’ve ever imagined. A very powerful book has gone missing, Charlie suspects the guy she’s watching has it but naturally things aren’t going to be that easy. The most powerful man in the city, Lionel Salt is demanding the return of this missing book in just a few days time, if she doesn’t get it to him by then, we’ll, things won’t be good for her.

I think one of my struggles with this book started with entering a “new world” and having no idea how things were run. I mean we got some glimpses at what this “shadow magic” is like but it was still rather confusing to see how it applied to the world Charlie lives in. Is it a bad power or good? Usually it depends on the user but I still struggled to grasp why it was such a “thing.”

If that wasn't enough we had several chapters of flashbacks. I’m all for a well-timed flashback that contributes to the story or explains a recent happening. Most times these just felt like flashbacks for flashbacks sake. I mean most of these could’ve been summed up in a line or two of Charlie’s thoughts.

The mystery element was well-played out though. I suspected a thing or two but was still taken by surprise by the outcomes. As far as romance goes there was a few moments of heat between Charlie and Vince but nothing over the top. Vince actually goes MIA for half the book or so, which is where some mystery element comes in.

At first I wasn’t entirely sure whether this was a standalone or series and based on the book’s ending, series seems the likely bet! Despite a few hang-ups I had, I would easily consider continuing the series. Most likely I’d wait for a finished copy this time around as I wonder if some of my confusion was only due to the ARC formatting.

Book of Night is quite the engaging mystery read with many twists and turns. Charlie’s ticking time clock only adds to the tension! This is definitely an intriguing mystery read that will keep one turning the pages for its finale. While I had a few issues with this one I’m still eager to see where this story-line will go!

Human
3.0 out of 5 stars Honest Review
Reviewed in the United States on May 15, 2022
This new fantasy series by Holly Black plays on her best qualities as a writer, which is leaning into the darker side of fairytales. An urban fantasy novel, set in either modern-day, near-future, or similar-but-alternate universe and explores shadow magic. In this stylistically drab world, gloamist are magicians who use shadow magic, that is a shadow that has been "quickened", a shadow that is full of magic... a shadow who feeds off the blood of its person and is made up of everything that person wants to be rid of... all the things they hate about themselves.

Enter Charlie Hall, our slightly damaged heroine. She has a past that has led her to a life that she's not proud of, but is ok with. It's her life. She's a thief and part-time bartender. But being a thief is dangerous, especially when you work for gloamists who are especially territorial with their secrets. Slowly Charlie is pulled into a plot that involves murder, secrets, mayhem, and the man who put Charlie on the path that she's on today. Will she discover what ties everything together before it buries her?

Holly Black's new book is ambitious and a little rough around the edges. I think that she had a clear idea of this new world that she wanted to share with readers, but failed to bring that world to life. It's disappointing given the vibrant world-building she's done in her other books. I found myself often confused about the nature of the magic, the world, and ultimately the characters. She also side-lined the best character for a big chunk of the book. Combine that with chapters that randomly happened in the past, and not the main character it all felt a little mish-mashed. I was frustrated because the whole book is working toward this big reveal/twist that happens at the end of the book, but it was very apparent early on in the book what the twist was going to be.

I am probably being unfair as I am unable to separate this book from her other writing. She does some really great things with this book and its concept, but for me, she was unable to really draw me into it as a reader.
