I was forced to use this textbook for the relational DB section of a database systems class. It always annoys me that some of the professors don't even read the reviews or content of the book itself before using one for class. The presentation wasn't clear and there were just too much information thrown at once for someone who's just learning database systems. A lot of authors and professors alike think that throwing all the information at students is the best way to teach when it's exactly the opposite. Especially for new comers, people need simplified and systematic approach to learning the new material, which, in my opinion, this textbook did rather poor job of.
If you are stuck with this textbook, I'd highly highly recommend getting another reference textbook that contains better explanation and maybe use some of the examples in this text as review. I used another database systems textbook written out by Jukic and it worked out for me.
