5.0 out of 5 starsSO jealous of the sisters' relationship!
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on June 21, 2019
I loved The Summer of Sunshine & Margot! It was all that I expected it to be. I want to write about what I enjoyed in this book and why. There are four main characters in the story, two of which are the sisters: Margot and Sunshine Baxter. Their relationship had to be the best part of the story for me. They had a special, close relationship but it wasn’t sickly sweet. In fact, it had a LOT of snark – which I totally love. They are very different, fraternal twins, but there is a very close bond between them. It was especially funny when the called each other on their respective B.S. Sometimes it made me snort-laugh. Thru it all, though, they are always there for one another with a very strong bond of love.

As for the two sisters, I can sort of identify with parts of each of their characters. I loved both of them in very different ways. Margot was more buttoned-up than Sunshine however she was living life the best way she thought she could. I liked that she felt deeply, even when that emotion was hard for her. And Sunshine. To me, she felt she was broken somehow, but I loved her highs and lows equally. She just seemed so real to me.

Then there are the two men in their lives: Alec Mcnicol for Margo and Declan Dubois for Sunshine. The budding relationship between these two gents and the sisters, is better told by the author but I can tell you that Alec was…closed off might be a good term. He’s the son of Margot’s client, Bianca Wray, who as a secondary character is wayyyyyyyyyyyy strong, both in her persona and character in this story. Again, no spoilers, and I couldn’t do it justice but Alec and his mother have “stuff” to work through before Margo can make headway with either of them. Too simple an explanation but Margot’s and Alec’s story is deeply touching, maddening, and wonderful at the same time. And Declan… He comes with an adorable little boy named Connor, Sunshine’s charge (as his nanny). For Declan’s character, he may have spent much time in his own head but I think he went through all the “things” you’d think he should, and would, if you were in his position. He and Sunshine also have not only touching moments but some pretty snarky ones, too. Loved their story. And Connor? I would adopt this little boy in a heartbeat. As the secondary character in Sunshine’s story, he usually stole the show whenever he appeared on the page. Loved him!

Thoroughly enjoyed this book and I highly recommend, even if it did come with too many ants for my taste. (You’ll get the reference when you read the story.)

3.0 out of 5 starsNice read

It’s great that Margot and Sunshine stop their unintentional destructive behavior by falling for the wrong guy or guys and make the changes to fix it.
For me I need to take a break from Susan Mallery books because now each book is starting to become repetitive.

I had no idea this was a Harlequin romance. I quickly bought or borrowed on Kindle Unlimited. Oh well I read it anyway. If course it was entirely predictable everyone is beautiful, smart and funny and they all live happily ever after. The end.

2.0 out of 5 stars Repetitive, two sisters—same story
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on September 22, 2019
The first few chapters were very descriptive and the characters were relatable. Each chapter more layers are unraveled but then by chapter 10 it gets very repetitive. Each of the characters are beautiful and sexy, yet totally and completely insecure and unsure of themselves.

Sunshine constantly complains about being all “ass and boobs” and a “piece of ass”, any time she goes anywhere she gets hit on. Every chapter someone new is lusting after her, while at the same time she’s completely insecure of herself bc of her bad history with men. Her boss lusts for her in every chapter until the end of the book, but the most that happens is phone sex and then they decide to get married. Very anti climatic and just leaves the reader like wth.

Margot is described as a quiet beauty and draws attention everywhere she goes but she’s awkward. She falls for her boss’s son yet her insecurities keep her at bay for a handful of chapters of them lusting for each other but no one wants to admit their feelings. See the similarities between the two stories? They’re basically the same stories except these characters do eventually hook up but they insecurities break them apart but then end up together.

Very repetitive and gets dry after the first 100 pages. The book should be “the summer of lusting after Sunshine and Margot”

2.0 out of 5 stars Won't read Susan Mallery again
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on March 5, 2022
It could have been a good; parallel stories of twins finding love, but it wasn't. The last straw was Sunshine and Declan's phone "affair." Really? A number of times I thought, "would that character do that?" In the past, I've not enjoyed reading a story but have never felt strongly enough to write a review.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on June 1, 2020
I'm a huge Susan Mallery fan & I am very disappointed in this one! I couldn't wait to read it & now I almost wish I hadn't! I usually finish her books in 3-4 days, but this one I hadn't finished in 6 wks. By the time I came to chapter 18, I was ready to put it away & not finish it, but I forced myself.
It lacks the spark she usually has in her books & wasn't a steady read for me. I had a hard time staying awake! Turned out to be a waste of my reading time.
Her books are usually full of spirit & drive! Her characters make me want to know them personally & share in their joys & sorrows! This one, however, made me glad to know they were just uninteresting characters in a book.
Boring & empty is how I describe The Summer of Sunshine & Margot!
Susan, I don't know what happened but please don't let it happen again! Because I'm such a big fan, I just couldn't give it 1 star for awful, but couldn't give over 2!!

2.0 out of 5 stars SO S....l....o....w....

I checked out an e-copy of this book from my local library because quite frankly, Susan's books are ridiculously expensive these days and out of my budget. And I am so glad I didn't spend a penny on this title! Dreadfully slow - I had to force myself to finish this. I couldn't manage to care even a little bit about any of the characters and the conflict resolutions were abrupt and unfulfilling at the end. I never did grasp exactly how Margot helped Bianca - that storyline just kind of fizzled. All in all, a very unsatisfying book!

2.0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money buying it, go to the library.

I am a huge fan of Susan Mallery and have most if not all of her books. This one fell short of her usual. The sisters were okay but the book was slow and the storylines, in my opinion, silly. I get starting over but really. A famous actress pulls up her skirt to let a scary fan touch her throng clad butt for 250K? A seemingly nice guy ask to have sex over a first meeting for drinks? And ants save the day? The little boy, Connor, was the on!y bright spot in this book, and unfortunately, he wasn't enough to carry it through to the end.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not Mallery’s best work

This was a very slow read. I could never fully invest in the main characters.
I had a lot of stop and starts but finally finished the book to get a rushed and incomplete ending.

I honestly didn't love this book as much as I had hoped. I just couldn't vibe with the characters and had a hard time connecting with them. It focused on some sexual themes more than I expected as a major element of the book. It just wasn't what I was expecting.

2.0 out of 5 stars Definitely Not Her Best Work

YAWN. Normally I love Susan Mallery's novels, but not this one. I can barely get into it before I get bored again and put it back down. I don't like the characters I've met so far, finding nothing in particular to like about any of them, and it's taking me forever to get very far in it. I don't like the storyline which just doesn't interest me.

I bought the hardcover edition and at least I can donate it to the library for income tax purposes, but I will try to finish it first even if it takes me forever.

First book that I have read by this author and will probably be my last . The story was so predictable that I was bored. Also felt that the phone sex part came out of left field . With so much quality reading material a available , I am sorry that I wasted my time
