so glad I did! This is not only a great comic book, it’s a book that’s full of positivity, clean humor, abject silliness and a darned good time that can be enjoyed by the whole family.
The illustrations are fabulous. Did anyone else think the Fair Fairy looked like a cranky Danny DeVito? The new “Flip-er-ama” feature that starts at the end of chapter 3 is just a riot; complete with a full page of directions! There’s special artwork to support this feature😉
Barky McTreeface looks an awful lot like Jim Carey, right? All the characters have such great personalities, I’m seriously thinking about the previous 7 books...
Petey and Dog Man band together and forge a friendship realizing that friends and family are best when it comes to saving what means most to you.
My favorite character might be Commander Cupcake. I won’t say who I tho’t he looked like, but the glasses are a big clue! This is one safe way to get my gluten on🥰
Dav Pilkey ends the book by adding to its value - there are pages of “how to draw” the characters and a few pages of notes that inspired adults can use to spark further reading and conversation. A very worthy reading experience 📚
Though they are written for kids, Dog Man books tend to impart lessons that adults as well as children could benefit from without being preachy.
In Fetch-22, the characters learn that the only way to make things perfectly fair is if everybody gets nothing. Introduce goods and there will always be someone who has more. Maybe not the lesson most Americans want to hear but it is true as an aphorism.
Pilkey also teaches that while you may not be able to save the world, you can always save someone’s world. The adage from Jewish tradition, “He who saves one life saves the whole world” is exemplified.
Best of all, while your kids are enjoying the madcap antics of Dog-Man and his companions they can learn these lessons without a moralizing tone.
As for my ten year old, he says it is as good as the prior Dog-Man books. Highly recommended.
My 8-year-old daughter is *obsessed* with Dav Pilkey's Dog Man series. She devours each book within an hour or two of receiving it, and she's read each one 10-15 times. This book was no exception – I gave it to her an hour before bedtime and she was so excited she sat down and read it straight-through. Her review: "Good, good, good, good, GOOD! Five Stars!!" More specifically, she said this one is "the best of them all" and she loved the fact that there were more animal characters in this volume (they're her favorite). She also liked the plot and presented a riveting synopsis about evil tadpoles with mind-control powers. It sounded very exciting!
My daughter is a strong reader and enjoys all sorts of chapter books, but Dog Man holds a special place in her heart. I love how much she loves these stories.
These are great books. They are such a hit with the kids! Book arrived on time in great condition. No rips or tears! We have all the Dog Man books and will be buying anymore he publishes in the future. Great find.
We really appreciate being able to pre order and get our copy on the release date—Dec 10. I ordered for a Hanukkah gift—we celebrate Christmas too. My son had a double ear infection on the date this book arrived.
I let him open it early—while we were waiting for his prescription to be filled. He finished it in the car in about an hour. He is in kindergarten and fell in love with Dogman on the bus to school one day, reading to another kindergartner who is not yet reading. Flipping the pages like mad and seriously crying over having to leave copies with the school, bus, or library.
I had been trying to get him to bump up to chapter books all summer, but he really was not having it because he did not want to give up illustration. He reads so well though—he needed this series. He’s devoured all of these books and as such it has been a pleasure to purchase them and watch him light up. Fostering that love for voracious reading was my goal, but it really is all Dav as to how we managed to get there.
My son is getting the few he’s missing— for Christmas. But he has already read them all a bunch of times. One of his favorite features are the “flip-o-ramas.”
My son has adhd and does not sit still for long. He can sit quietly and reread Dogman anytime. That’s literally priceless on several fronts.
I’m not too keen on some of the more ridiculous bits, but it’s not written for moms. It’s written to keep the interests of action-packed slap-stick kiddos. And it does. Fully. Sometimes there’s a lesson to glean. I don’t count on it, but it’s nice when it comes too.
There is always something new they catch when they reread these books too. Worth every penny (and more!) My son has no initial interest in Captain Underpants, but given how much he adores Dogman and loathes all of the other books we’ve tried—we may need to give Dav’s others a go.
I haven’t read this and I lose interest when my son tells me even after I ask him. Something about tadpoles and I imagine a lot like “catch 22.” I’m grateful my son has found this series.
My autistic nephew is going on 9 and has been reading this series since he was 5 or 6 too. Over and again. He actually writes a lot of his own graphic books now too—some I truly think could be published. I made sure to let his mama know this next book was out—we’re hoping to see the musical/play when it comes to town in February.
We’re kind of obsessed about Dogman and are blessed to have it in our lives. Thanks Dav!
My kiddo used to read biographies but now focusing of anything to read is so hard for her anymore. Thanks, ADHD. Well there was NO WAY my gifted Kid was going to read this drivel. Until she begged me for it because she missed reading herself to sleep. She loves this stuff, keeps up her grades and troublesome behavior has even improved because it’s a huge stress reliever. She’s read all of these in a week and I’ve lightened up. Let them be little and love the little that they are. Thanks Mr. Pilkey
As always, Dav Pilkey delivers a book that my kid cannot wait to get his hands on! Within a couple of hours, he was finished reading it. My favorite part about the Dog Man series is that even after one read, my son goes back to read it over and over again. These are a great investment for any child's library! Especially kids who are not always enthusiastic about reading - I have NO trouble getting my son to sit down to read this. Great job as always, Dav!
