A bit of general info and a lot of padding
Reviewed in the United States on April 23, 2018
The contents of this book could have been summarized in a short article. By page 5 the book tells you that if you want to know how to form a nonprofit you should get the book "How to Form a Nonprofit" which is also published by the same publisher! A lot of other books by Nolo are recommended usually prefaced by something along the lines of "we can't go into much detail here, but get this other book that we publish." The discussion of the annual tax return, form 990 takes up just half a page, and contains the comment "half the battle is knowing which form to file." Well, this book mentions Forms 990, 990-N and 990-EZ but fails to mention Form 990-PF!
The cover says the book includes downloadable forms. Only four forms are available, none of them any use to me (agreement with independent contractor, and so on.) I would have expected "Articles of Organization" for a corporation and a trust document if the nonprofit is a trust, but nope. Neither downloadable, nor printed in the book. I would have expected bylaws, either in the book or downloadable. Nope.
What this book does is a lot of padding: chapters on hiring employees and withholding tax, on starting a website, on fundraising (call people or send out letters, duh!) on finding a lawyer (get a referral, duh) etc.
I'm very disappointed because I have bought other books by Nolo (Estate Planning, Revokable Living Trust) and those were good books.
