Top critical review
An excellent new episode in the more or less arbitrary writing style canon

I just paid yet another $30 to be able to do my job. I'm not at one of those schools with "funds" for "extras" like "style manuals" that might "let a person do a major portion of their job." The APA updates these every few years, and the rest of the APA-style world has to stop what it's doing and learn a new system. Some of these changes are for good reason, like avoiding reductive language. Others seem motivated by such minor concerns that one wonders how desperately the APA needs a bit of extra funding this year. Oh, I should bold my figure names now? Amazing!
Overall, this is the 21st century. Computers exist. The APA is not supposed to be for-profit. How about making the PDF free to download and the hardcopy $15 on print-by-demand? Even better, I'd pay $5 for a PDF that could be updated electronically with higlighted changes the next time the APA decides to make a small but critical chunk of tens of thousands of scholars' skill sets obsolete.
