OMG - from hating it to LOVING it

So Robert Dugoni has recently become one of my favorite authors. I love the Charles Jenkins series, the Tracy Crosswhite series, and now, the David Sloan series. I appreciate the character crossovers in the multiple series and the fact that although there is character crossover the books read well as independent or individual reads. This is the highest rating I have given and it is because I seriously went from hating what I was reading to loving it. ***spoiler alerts***
I hated this book because it saw the coupling of David Sloan with a previous legal nemesis, Barclay Reid. I hated that. I was hoping Sloan would take leave of a relationship since the murder of his wife and of all people to get hooked up with—Barclay Reid. Ew. As I was progressing through the chapters though, the lightbulb came on and I saw where this was going. Again, very intriguing and expertly crafted plot. This author is a master at developing his characters so the reader feels an empathy to them. I so wanted David Sloan to walk away from Barclay Reid but in the end, he does even better. My favorite part of this book was the epilogue. The epilogue just set the tone back to a mild, peaceful existence which is important to the Sloan series.
