Guns and monsters, oh my! Fun weekend read
Reviewed in the United States on August 2, 2014
First, I enjoyed this book OK. I wasn't expecting anything deep or thought provoking here. Just looking for a quick read over a weekend. I got what I wanted there.
Second, I should have stopped after the second or third book (I skipped over Alpha in the series). I mean I totally like the whole monsters are bad and the only good monster is a dead monster story, and I'm so tired of the 'monsters aren't really that bad once you get to know them' plot line. However, I'll say that these stories have gotten a little too grandiose. When the main character has to have demi-god like powers to just stay alive, I feel that I've lost a bit of the connection to the character (ok, maybe a lot of connection relative to the first book).
Minor point, I know Larry is a gun nut, and it's good that he know which end of the barrel to point towards the enemy. However, it seems like he's bringing out every 'cool' gun ever made to the stories, and the characters just happen to be experts with anything having a trigger. I'm not sure it works that way, at least in my limited arsenal at home.
