I really like this series.

I was kinda wishy washy about this series after the first book. But I decided I might as well at least try to finish the ones that I bought.

I'm glad I did.

The series really takes off.

I enjoy the setting and characters. The story is very gripping and really holds your attention. There's some bits and pieces I'd change if I could. But I still believe that it's a very good read.

Stay with it - it gets better

Early in this Book II of the series I almost put it down. I felt like the wave upon wave of Sirens was getting boring. I pushed through and feel that I've been rewarded for my effort - there has been more story development and more character development. One suggestion in the reading of the story, however, is to lose the artificially mispronounced city names such as My-am-eye. We get it. The old languages hav been lost, but now it is simply an annoying distraction.

"HeckDivers" reads like it was very challenging for this author to write. There were times when I could sense him laying out the facts of the plot in painfully clear fashion. Add to that the fact that the logistics often seemed poorly thought-out, and yet you are still left with a surprisingly interesting concept.

You've got a near-future ship that floats because it is full of helium gas (no propellers, I guess?). You've got monsters that "evolved" from Earth-bound life forms after only 250 years, which time they spent in intense radiation somehow not dying off entirely, and they all just happened to turn into drastically altered, hideous nightmare-beasts. You've got nuclear reactor cores that seem to be sitting around, cached inside suitcases for the helldivers to pick up, as though they are briefcases full of cash in a heist story. And then you've got the last two remaining human ships going down or threatening to go down at just about the same time for exactly the same reasons (we must have more cores and valves or we'll die!).

But at the same time, I appreciate the straight-forward and action-packed plot. It's a very imaginative premise, which is oddly incongruous with the less-than-imaginative execution -- BUT STILL, this story never stopped to let me think about that while I was reading it. It was almost continuously "actiony", so at least I got to turn off my brain while listening to this book on audio.

Still exciting but

Pretty good continuation of the main story but like many good writers with multiple story lines i.e. Working on different book, that book 3 is on the table so number two has to get done.
I think the storyline suffered from lack of a story continuation that would have kept it interesting
Discovering a second ship airborne would have been more interesting and given filler to this book
Not sure I will bother with the next one
